Kitchen cupboards and fridge need a good cleaning

by The Diva

Sometime in the near future- probably this month, my kitchen is going to get a thorough cleaning out.

By this I mean, not only scrubbing the floors, the oven and counters, but I plan on emptying out the fridge and all of the cupboards.

Unless you have a bare fridge, I think most of us can say that we all have a jar or two or ten that has been sitting in the back of the fridge or in the fridge door for God only knows how long. Did you know that most items such as jams, mayonnaise and relishes are only good for three or four months once they’re opened? If you’re like us and you don’t us them up that fast they could be in the fridge a heck of a lot longer than that, right? Not good.

So between the fridge and all the stuff I find in the back of our cupboards I’m sure there will be a lot of stuff thrown out. I know there are things in my cupboards that I haven’t used in years. That includes foods like muffin mixes and small appliances.

Once I do get around to clearing out my cupboards I might take a serious look at my pots and pans. I have Lagostina pots and I love them, but they’re getting old or at least some of the ones that I use most often are getting a little worn out. Maybe I could add one or two new pieces of enamel cookware to my collection? I know I’ll have more room for them once the cupboards get cleared out.

Whens the last time you totally cleaned out your fridge and or cupboards? Big job, isn’t it?

Good Bye heat wave

by The Diva

I’m so glad this heat wave that we’ve been going through all week finally seems to be coming to an end.

I can’t wait to give not only the air conditioning but maybe our new Hunter ceiling fans a bit of a break this weekend.

Oh and it will be nice to have the doors and windows open – get some fresh air inside the house.

I love air conditioning when it’s hot outside. It’s a necessary evil … but the longer it’s on and the doors are sealed shut the staler the air inside the house seems. It’s so nice once we can open the doors and windows and I can feel a breeze on my skin.

Don’t you love it when the weather is nice enough that you can let some fresh air into the house?

A lazy weekend

by The Diva

We’re just having a lazy weekend. We’ve been so busy over the last couple of weeks- traveling and having visitors stay over … it’s nice to try and have a quite weekend.

I say try … because it didn’t exactly work out that way. My husband wanted his cousin (who’s a manager at a Mercedes dealership) to check out our car so earlier this afternoon we took a drive out to his house and let him take the car out for a drive on the highway. Oh and we also took a trip to Costco while we were at it.

Our car got a passing grade from my husbands cousin. It handles well and he couldn’t find any problems with it. Good news!

When we first arrived at Costco I thought it was a mistake going there on a Saturday … we had to line up with our cart just to get in! I thought about looking for the nearest exit signs once I got in there it was so crowded! However, once we started shopping (I headed to the pharmacy first while they went to get some food) it went fast and when we were finished there was hardly anyone in line at the cash registers so I think we were in and out of Costco in half an hour. It might have been our fastest visit yet!

So far we have no plans for tomorrow and I like it that way. I think I’m going to sleep in and then maybe later in the day we’ll watch some movies. Like I said – it’s a lazy weekend!

What are you up to this weekend?

Time to tighten our belts – tight finances

by The Diva

My husband and I are in a financial crunch right now. We just had to buy a new car when our old one unexpectedly died.

Man … we didn’t have any money to spare either. Well, I guess we had enough available to us to swing buying a used car, but that’s it. Now we have to watch every penny!

I’m now scratching my head and trying to figure out ways to both save and make more money. I have several websites and blogs and that’s the main way I earn income these days since I’m on medical leave from my work. Somehow though I need to come up with a few hundred dollars more per month.

Actually I cam across some Forex training webinars and I was thinking about looking into them … hey who knows, maybe I’d be good at. If I were, it would sure be a good way to make some much needed money! Anyone try this?

We have a new “used” car

by The Diva

Our car died last week. Yes, I really mean died.

My husband had borrowed his parents car last weekend when he went up North to Muskoka for a big party and later to his sisters cottage in Holland Landing. Our car, a Ford Contour, was 14 years old and he just didn’t trust it for a big drive.

So his mom had our car and while she was driving it last weekend the car let out a loud groan like sound and lost power. It turned out that some plug in the bottom of the transmission fell out and all of the transmission fluids came out with it.

Once the in-laws finally told us that our car had broken down (last Wednesday – five days after it had died) we decided to have the garage order the part for the car and fix it …. but once they put it in on Friday the fluids still leaked. I guess the casing around the transmission was pitted so we’d actually need a whole new transmission. They figured putting in a new transmission would cost us close to $3000 and we didn’t think it was a good idea to put that much money into a 14 year old car so we started looking for new (used) cars on Friday evening shortly after we got the news.

Of course the last thing we needed to do right now was buy a car! We’re going to have a very tight budget over the next few months. Groan.

As it turns out the garage where our car was taken (in Brantford and we’re in Toronto) also has a used car dealership on the lot. So we took a look at their selection of cars and finally picked out a used 2006 Pontiac Pursuit.

We couldn’t finalize anything until today when the licensing office would be open, so my husband hitched a ride back to Brantford yesterday with his brother who was visiting from Chicago and early this morning he went back to the dealership to test drive the car once more (test heater etc) and then buy the car.

Our old car is going to be junked. We got a 100 dollars for it. Shame, because it was a good car and wasn’t giving us any trouble until this happened.

My husband transferred everything from our old car to the new car before driving back to Toronto. I think his mom must have left some things in the car though … because there’s a book about healing foods and a pamphlet for HCG diet Austin that she must have picked up when she was traveling two weeks ago. I guess we’ll return those things the next time we see her or maybe give them to our nephew if he comes to Toronto to do Extra work as he has been doing every week so far this summer.

Once Chris got home with the new car we took it out for a drive – and to get groceries. It’s very nice – nice smooth drive. Oh and the radio shows what song is playing. Our old car didn’t do that – I wonder how it knows?

Anyway I guess it’s too late to ask my readers if their familiar with this car and know of any problems … but still, if you do know of any problems with this car (a Pontiac Pursuit) I guess I’d still like to hear about them.

Now to read the cars manual to figure out the car alarm etc …
