Top US States For The Ultimate Antique Shopping Experience

by Trish

Antique shopping offers great thrills for vintage lovers. If you are searching for special items that you want to add to your collection, America is a wonderful hunting ground. Whether or not shopping is your favorite pastime, there are excellent places in the US where you can quench your thirst for genuine souvenirs.

Oklahoma

The state of Oklahoma consists of several antique shops. There are towns where you can find real antique stores, particularly in Stillwater. There is a store located there that was built in 1894, so just the place itself is historic. Purcell and Ardmore also have intriguing assortments. Old tea collections are available at the Antique Marketplace Tea Room in Duncan, OK.

Tennessee

This state also has a vast collection of antique shops scattered all over. However, antique lovers will truly find Nashville as their greatest source for antiques. From pottery to face jugs and folk art, there is something for every antique collector in the capital city.

Washington

This northwestern US state offers a number of antique shops for everyone. There’s Georgetown, which is famous for old home furnishings and décor. There’s also the Kensington Antique Row in Maryland, which is deemed the first antiques center in the entire metropolitan. Northern Virginia is also a great destination where historic artworks and decorative items can be found. While here, don’t miss the antique mall in Mt. Vernon where over 25 dealers offer striking antique furniture, jewelry, and rugs among others.

Michigan

Detroit, Michigan is where you should be if you want to experience antiques shopping at a flea market. The Royal Oak Farmer’s Market in Detroit becomes an incredible hunting place for collectibles and authentic antiques. There’s also Vogue Vintage in Pleasant Ridge, which is a brilliant shopping spot where large-scale items are found, including bicycles, chairs, and dining room sets.

New York

Greenport is one of the places to visit while in the state. Enthusiasts will find something interesting here to add to their seafaring collection. Southold is another great place to drop by in which features a quieter bunch of shops. The antique doll hospital is located in this town. Another outstanding spot for you is in Locust Valley where inexpensive yet classic items are up for sale.

Texas

If you’re in Texas, drop by at the antique stores in Dallas. The most popular ones here are found in the Dallas Design District, particularly in the Industrial Boulevard, Slocum, and Dragon Street. Note, however, that both Slocum and Dragon Street typically have antique shops that are up for trade only. Nevertheless, you can still find some that allow you to buy antiques especially those with heavy emphasis on English and French designs.

Antiques may be old and timeworn, but to every collector, they will always be valuable and exquisite. On your next treasure hunting, consider the sites mentioned above for a satisfying experience on antique shopping.

Putting Your Air Conditioner In Condition Before Summer

by Trish

As the days are starting to get longer and the nights shorter, it is only a matter of months before summer sets in. And that means one thing: sweltering temperatures. In such case, the best defense you have against summer’s hot temperatures is none other than a central air-conditioning system. If you have one at home, be sure to include its tune up in your to-do list for spring so that it will be up and running by summer and will work its best to make your home comfortable. Here are the things you should do.

Clean up the exterior condenser

The condenser is the large unit that is usually situated outdoors. Its main role is to regulate the refrigerant’s temperature so that it blows cool air indoors. In order for this component to work properly, it should have unhampered flow of air around it and its fan should also be free of debris. Hence, give the unit some spring cleaning. Remove its fan and wash it with a garden hose. If there is a build up, consider using a mild detergent to remove the debris and douse it with water. Also, clean the area surrounding the condenser. At the most, there should be ample space around the component, so be sure that there are no low-hanging branches, shrubs or other obstructions nearby.

Replace the filter

As a rule of thumb, you should be checking your air conditioner’s filter once a month. This is to ensure that it is not clogged and air is smoothly flowing through the blowing unit, letting the cooling coil to cool up. If you have not checked your AC’s filter and it is already clogged, this can cause the unit to shut down. To avoid that from happening, the best thing you can do is to replace the old filter with a new one. There are many filter grades available in the market so it will not be difficult to find a piece that is compatible with your AC. Be forewarned though that if you use a filter that reduces allergens, you should check it more often as it clogs faster.

Examine the condensate removal system

When your AC is in operation and warm air travel across the cooling coil, condensation happens. Depending on the blower unit of your air-conditioning system, it will deal with condensation in different ways. For example, it may discharge the moisture directly in a drain, or it may redirect the water vapor into a pan beneath the blower where it will just evaporate.

To ensure your AC’s condensate removal system is functioning, take the time to inspect it. If the system has a pump, try moving the float switch that engages the unit to see if it is working. If there is no pump and there is also no drain in the pan, check if it has a float switch. This wired sensor is set at a certain height in the pan and automatically shuts down when water touches it. Hence, ensure it is functioning properly as it serves as your indicator if there are leaks.

Inspect the ductwork

Your air conditioner delivers cool air inside your home through its ductwork, so it is important that these components are unobstructed. Open up the duct registers around the house and be sure that they are free of obstructions that could get inside the ductwork. Next, inspect the ducts running through your basement or attic. At the most, the joints, seams and other connections should be locked tightly together and the ductwork should have no gaps or corrosion where air could leak. If you find any problem spots where air could escape, seal them up with aluminum foil tape. You should also insulate the ductwork to prevent condensation.

If you suspect that there are molds growing in the ducts, it will be best if you contact a professional duct-cleaning company instead of tackling the job yourself. This may entail a little expense, but you can be assured that your AC’s ductwork will be free of molds, keeping your home safe and clean.

Top Tips For Decorating Your Windowsills

by Trish

Curtain'd Window

When thinking about the décor for a room and how to make the most of it, many people won’t really give much thought to the windowsills until the last minute. Often we think in detail about things like where the coffee table should go in relation to the couch, and what colour carpet and wallpaper we want, but will then literally just ‘dump’ a range of left over items onto our windowsills at the end.

It’s no surprise then that often the windowsills are far from the most interesting part of our décor and that often they end up looking cluttered or unattractive. Seeing as your windows are something that can be seen from both inside and outside of the room, this is a decision that should take a lot more time and consideration. Here then we will look at some of the top tips for deciding what to put on your windowsills – you’ll be surprised what a difference it can make to your entire room.

Practicality

Window, Upper St Giles, Norwich

The first thing to think about when choosing items to go on your windowsill is the practicality of having them there. Many of us will have curtains as well as netting on our windows, and will want to be able to reach the handle to let cold air in from time to time. That means we’ll constantly be reaching over our windowsills and rummaging around on them and that any tall or poorly balanced items could easily get knocked over and damaged. If you are going to put items on your windowsill then, ensure that they are resilient enough to survive a fall onto the floor and preferably choose smaller items that aren’t going to get in the way/won’t be liable to fall.

Another consideration here is light, and while the light coming through your window can be very beneficial for your potted plants, it may not be so good for a range of your decorative items and may in fact bleach them over time. If you have anything that has a bold colour and you want to keep it that way – avoid putting it on the windowsill.

Finally, avoid anything on your windowsill that will potentially attract burglars. Remember that anything you put here will essentially be on display to passers by, and you don’t want to put things in temptation’s way if it can be avoided.

Appearance

windowsill

In terms of what looks good on a windowsill it’s definitely normally going to be a matter of ‘less is more’. Clutter this area with lots of different items and it will look busy and crowded and this will mean that none of your items really stand out. On the other hand though, put just a few of your prized possessions on the window sill and you’ll find that they can really make a big impact. Think too about what will look good in this particular position – will people often be facing that window? And will the light from outside enhance them? Crystal items look wonderful in the window for instance as they can refract the light coming through.

by Trish

Looking to move to a custom home neighborhood can be exciting, but you need to know what you should be looking for in these locations to ensure you select the proper one.  Every neighborhood is different and has its own unique set of living guidelines.  Without this information, you could easily be like some people and find out there are far greater restrictions on your property and lifestyle than you realized before buying.   Do your homework ahead of time and get to know the neighborhood before buying your house…it’s easy to fall in love with a new house and completely forget about what comes with it.

First:  Know your builder

The first thing you should be looking for in custom home neighborhood is who the builder is. Some of these neighborhoods will require you to use the same builder and it could be owned by the company. You should research and find out who the main builder is in the neighborhood to ensure you are selecting the right neighborhood atmosphere for you and your family’s needs.  You also want to know this information because you may end up thinking you can select your builder and be shocked to find out you cannot.

Second:  Know Neighborhood Restrictions

The second thing you should look for in the custom home neighborhood is what kind of restrictions they have. Quite a few of these neighborhoods will have a homeowners association which you have to agree to abide by. Since they may have this, you will want to make sure you are able to live within their rules. Without this information you may find out after you have bought the house, you cannot have your dog or other animals you want to have.

Third:  Know The Requirements

The third thing you should consider is what kind of requirements they have on your home. These items may include having the landscape done in a specific way or even having your home painted in a way which you do not like. So you need to find out about these guidelines prior to the purchase of your dream home.

Planning and buying a new house can be exciting for many different reasons. However, if you are building a custom home, you should make sure you understand the neighborhood which you are buying in. Then you can know for certain if your house will be suited to your needs and those of your family, instead of finding out after the fact that the neighborhood isn’t the right fit.
