Extreme Home Decorating Ideas for This Holiday Season

by Trish

Ah, the joys of driving through your neighborhood around the holidays “oooh”ing and “ahhh”ing over the lights and joyous decorations that you see as you pass by each house. It’s a beautiful sight to see – so joyous and warm and inviting – it really is the epitome of the holiday spirit.

But there’s always an inner battle between your household and your neighbors between who can have the best holiday decorations each year, and it’s a battle that you just might win if you take some of these extreme home decorating ideas for this holiday season.

A Walk-In Gingerbread House

At Halloween, there are haunted houses. During the holidays, why not set up a walk-through gingerbread house in your yard?

Your house will be the attraction of the neighborhood, especially among the kids, if you set up a house that’s decorated from top to bottom in twinkling lights and fresh green wreaths. Inside, set up a display similar to those you see in malls when Santa visits – put in a big throne and have someone manning the Santa station at all times so kids can come visit and sit on his lap to tell him what they want for Christmas.

Make sure you decorate with lots of over-sized decorations. Think about a regular gingerbread house with all of the candy canes and gumdrops and pretty decor and replicate those same decorations on a much larger scale for a wildly successful walk-in holiday gingerbread house!

Santa and Sleigh on the Roof

No holiday house is complete until it’s decorated with a life size Santa sitting in a huge sleigh atop the roof of the house. And don’t forget the reindeer, too! Nine giant reindeer, including Rudolph, of course, make for a complete Santa scene that looks as real as can be.

For added effect, rig up some heavy-duty wiring into a nearby tree next to your house. Install the first few reindeer in the pack so that they look like they are lifting off up and away into the sky by securing them to the anchored wire. The neighborhood kids will love the illusion, and you’ll revel in knowing that no one else in your neighborhood thought of the idea before you!

A Singing Choir of Angels

Fortunately for you, this scene is fairly easy to pull of thanks to modern technology. All you really have to do is buy a few huge lit choir angels and place them in your yard. You can even buy ones that are attached to motors so that they move, or you can always install your own motors to customize the movement of your angels.

Then, all of you have to do is play some music around the display that goes with the movement of your angels, and you have yourself a giant singing choir of angels. Choose songs that are more hymnal than the classic holiday jingles, but be sure to mix those in here and there, too.

A Huge Christmas Tree

Nothing says the holidays like a giant Christmas tree in your yard that’s decked out in lights, ribbons and garland galore.

Choose the largest tree in your yard, or even bring in one from another location (we’re talking huge Christmas trees, like along the lines of the Rockefeller Plaza tree) and bring in the fire department with their huge ladders to help you get the lights strung all the way to the top of the tree. Don’t forget a large lit-up star on top of the tree to complete your holiday yard, and be sure to add the little details, too, like the ribbons and garland!

Your yard will be sure to be a hit with these extreme holiday decoration ideas – but remember to be creative, be original and don’t be afraid to go over the top!

Wouldn’t You Love A Space Lift?

by Trish

Is your space looking tired and drab?

Do you ever pass by the rooms in your home, tired of looking at the same old and tired-looking drabby space? Wouldn’t you love to replace your furniture or add art and accessories to your space, if only you knew what to place in the space? These reasons and more are why you need the help of an interior designer . Many believe that hiring an interior designer is only for those who have large-scale home projects in their minds. However, it’s possible to schedule a consultation with an interior designer, so that you can transform small spaces, or one room space at a time.

The next time you walk through a room or look at a designated space, look at your space with purpose. Many times, people are so used to looking at a couch or a table or a lamp simply for the purpose that these serve. An interior designer will help you to look at your space with fresh eyes. Not only will you learn how to view your space with intent, but you’ll learn how to view your space the way that your imagination sees the space. Your consultation will allow for you to sit down and actually consider all of the things that you’d like to see within the boundaries of a particular space. Would you like to see the space decorated with a certain color palette?  Would you like to see the space decorated in a certain style? What is your style personality? All of these questions will help your designer to lead you towards the look you’ve been searching for.

Is making your space warm and inviting a challange?

One of the challenges that an interior designer can help home dwellers to overcome, is how to change absolutely drab and uninspiring spaces into spaces that are warm, inviting and innovative. Sometimes a home dweller feels absolutely overwhelmed by the challenge of taking a totally blank space, and turning into a space they can be proud of. This is why the expertise of an interior designer can be very helpful. They can help a space transform from cold and overwhelming, to welcoming and exciting. So, whether a home dweller needs to get rid of old furniture or use furniture covers to reinvigorate old furniture, the interior designer can help. They have all sorts of tricks up their sleeves to help their clients absolutely love their new space lift!

Home Ventilation Problems and Solutions

by Trish

Home ventilation problems are some of the most elusive and tricky things that homeowners have to put up with. Unlike electrical or plumbing issues, there’s nothing that right away points that you have a ventilation problem – no leaks or soaring electricity bill. But if you’re still determined to find if you have any underlying home ventilation issue, then read on.

Problem No. 1: Foggy Windows

While we experience foggy windows every now and then, but when you have foggy windows day in a day out, this may signal a ventilation problem. This is extremely common in places which are found geographically north of the map and the problem occurs because the humidity level within the house becomes excessive. The extra water found in moist air is deposited on the surface of glass panes which leads to fogginess. The problem can escalate when ice develops on the base of windows.

There are two ways to solve this problem – reducing the moisture level to 40% or increasing the heat to keep the glass from developing fog. A heat recovery ventilator is very helpful in lowering the moisture level to below 40%. In choosing such kind of ventilator, opt for one which has an active heat pump so that water can be extracted from the moist air.

Problem No. 2: Damp Basements

This is an ironic house problem especially since the issue of damp basements often occurs during summer. This is due to the high level of humidity of outside air which leads to a lot of moisture. The problem can also be due to underground water which happens when water drains poorly in the soil or inadequate foundation damproofing. Capillary action of water can cause underground water to go through the foundation.

There are two routes which you can take to solve this problem – the expensive and the more affordable routes. You can opt to replace your house’s foundation drains or go through the damproofing once more and then start digging around your house which is the pricey solution to the problem. But if you do not have enough cash lying around, then take the cheaper approach and instead dehumidify the air found in your basement. Before you take the cheapest approach and skip on all of these measures, think about the odors and mildew that would inevitably develop with the humid air found in your basement and how much of a health hazard all that could be.

4 Pests That Damage Ornamental Plants

by Trish

All plants including ornamental plants are subjected to destructive insects. This can be a problem especially if you use ornamental plants inside your home for therapeutic and home décor purposes. The only way to deal with such insects is by learning how to identify them and know which type of treatment can be used against them. Always remember that treating a plant early can save it completely compared to delayed treatment. Here are four common pests that are known to damage ornamental plants inside and outside homes.

Aphids

Aphids are known to feed on rose bushes and ornamental plants by sucking them causing the plant leaves to curl, yellow off and then fall off. These insects are identified by their orange to black bodies measuring between 1/16 and 1/8 inch in length. They can often be found living and feeding underneath the leaves and stems of plants. Since aphids can transmit plant diseases, pest control is essential. The presence of ants must be controlled as they help spread aphids since they feed on the excretion. Treating aphid infested plants is easy with the help of insecticidal soap spray which quickly penetrates their soft bodies.

Mealybugs

Identified as small and soft bodied insects that are white and fuzzy, mealybugs can infest an array of plants, mostly located in warm and humid climates. Once they cover a plant stem and excrete honeydew, they can cause the plant to develop sooty mold which is a fungal disease. This can lead to yellowing leaves and stunted growth. Like other plant pests, controlling the insect will also mean having to control the presence of ants on the plant. You can spray insecticidal soap on the plant to get rid of mealybugs or simply introduce ladybugs to control them.

Scale Insects

There are more than 400 species of scale insects in the United States, but there are only two scale types that these insects feature – soft bodied and armored scales. They can be distinguished by their colors which seem to look like all the colors of the rainbow, and they measure between 1/16 and 1/8 inch. Sometimes identifying these insects can be complicated because their body shapes vary from oval to circular and pear shaped to oblong. They damage plants by feeding on the juice of plants which can lead to a growth halt if the infestation is not treated immediately. In order to treat plants infested with scale insects, ants must be controlled because they can carry scale insects onto plants. Plants can also be sprayed with a combination of insecticidal soap spray and canola oil, until all the insects are killed.

Spider Mites

Indoor and outdoor ornamental plants can be attacked by spider mites. They are related to the spider family and so can be identified by their red, yellow, green or brown bodies and the web weaved onto plants which are more noticeable. Spider mites can cause the leaves of plants to become discolored and flecked to almost burned, that then drop off until the entire plant dies. Though insecticides can be used to control this insect, the use of ladybugs and other natural enemies are considered safe, efficient and eco-friendly.
