5 Ways To Change Your Home Office To Skyrocket Your Productivity

by Trish

It’s common knowledge that you’re more productive when you enjoy your office environment. That’s not the greatest thing in the world when you work in an office with lots of other people at a big company. Your boss will want to save money and unless you work for Facebook you might not be provided with what you really want. It doesn’t matter when you work from home. When you are your own boss you get to make your own rules.

If you work in a horrible office it’s because of your own doing. You can’t blame anyone else. If you are not happy with your current setup then change it. It’s your house and all it takes is for you to go out and pick up a few things and it could change the way you work in the future. Even some simple things could skyrocket your productivity and you would see an increase in profits. Here’s a few things you can do to get started.

Make use of the walls

You have plenty of space all around you, so take full advantage of it. Put some white boards up on the walls and you’ll be able to write down all your ideas when they pop into your head. When you can turn around to write something down it makes life much easier. Having something so big to write on gives you the ability to keep all your plans firmly in your mind. You can pick up white boards from anywhere and if you can’t fit them yourself, I’m sure you could find a helpful neighbor to give you a hand.

Keep it looking bright

Nobody is productive in a dark office, unless it’s a person who has had a few too many the night before. If your office looks nice and bright it will change the way you feel. It will energize you and allow you to get on with some seriously hard work. If there’s any way you can have your window size increased it could be something to think about. Cheaper options include more lights or stronger bulbs.

Use a chair with wheels

Because it’s your home you might not feel the need to ruin your carpet by using a chair with wheels. This is a huge mistake. It might not feel like it, but you will waste a lot of time moving around if you use a chair without wheels and it will definitely eat into your productivity. That doesn’t mean you need to choose something that’s not comfortable. There’s plenty of great leather chairs that will allow you to move as freely as you like.

Lay it out properly

When you are planning where everything will go, you should be thinking about what will make it as easy as possible for you to get stuff done. Things that don’t get used as much should be at the back of the room. Things you use all the time should be within arms reach of the computer. You also need to be able to move about freely, so you don’t want stuff lying around and getting in your way. If you take a few hours to plan everything carefully it will definitely pay you back a thousand times over in the future.

Use bright colors

This one is a little different to the brightness one. It’s more than making the place look brighter, but actually how you feel. When you step into a room with funky colors it’s going to leave you more perked up and feeling creative. How can you expect to be creative in a room that resembles a funeral home? If you have a boring job then stick with the white and brown, but jazz it up a little if your job is exciting or you want it be to.

Five Cheap And Easy Ways To Increase Your Home’s Security

by Trish

If you love your home, and your own personal safety, beefing up your home security is always going to make sense. And though there are certainly many expensive solutions available, most people are surprised to learn just how much can be achieved with a little bit of DIY.

If you want a more secure home, you don’t need to call a security company. And you certainly don’t need to install an expensive surveillance system. All you need is a little bit of time and DIY know how. Here are five tips for turning your home into a fortress without raiding your savings.

Replace Your Locks

Lesson one when it comes to DIY home security is to beef up your locks. This can be done in three steps.

  • Install deadbolts on all of your exterior doors. When shopping for deadbolts, stick to those with three inch screws and strike plates that are at least a quarter of an inch thick.
  • Install pry proof locks on all of your windows. You might be surprised to learn just how easily most windows can be opened, even when locked.
  • Lock your mailbox. Very few homeowners bother to do this and that’s one of the reasons that identity theft is such a big problem. You wouldn’t hand your bank statement to a stranger, don’t leave your mailbox unlocked.

Increase Your Homes Visibility

If you’re home isn’t visible from the road, it’s significantly more likely to be targeted by a burgler. Unfortunately, the more privacy your home has, the easier it is for a burgler to break in unnoticed.

If there are any obstacles between your home and the road, ask yourself how you can get rid of them. Such obstacles are known to make houses an attractive choice for those looking to commit a burglary.

Light Things Up

Though day time burglaries certainly do happen, statistically your home is far more likely to be broken into during the hours of darkness. And one of the easiest ways to protect your home from such break ins is to light it up.

You should aim to install exterior lighting around all of your homes weakest points i.e. its doors and ground floor windows. To avoid ridiculously high energy bills, opt for lights that are controlled by a motion sensor.

Install a Fake Security Camera

Expensive surveillance systems are impressive, but did you know that a wooden box that looks like a camera can be just as effective? Burglars don’t like the look of security cameras and they rarely spend very much time inspecting those that they see.

A fake security camera made of nothing but wood and glass is therefore more than capable of acting  as a serious deterrent to anyone considering breaking into your home.

Install a DIY Alarm System

Finally, getting an alarm system professionally installed can work out pretty expensive but the same cannot be said for alarm systems that you install yourself. DIY alarm systems are widely available, surprisingly cheap and come complete with detailed instructions.

The best DIY alarm systems are typically the wireless variety. Wireless systems are not only easier to install, they are easier to both move around and expand at a later date.

How To Detect Infestations In Your Garden

by Trish

You will often come across pest infestations in your garden, but mostly when the infestation has become severe. In order to save your garden from severe damage from pests, it is important that you are able to detect the early signs of infestations. It is also important that you are informed about the various pest control methods available to you to control and prevent further pest infestations. This way you will be able to maintain your garden healthily. However, it is essential that you seek professional pest control assistance when you are unable to control the infestation in your garden to avoid the pests from invading your home.

How To Detect Infestations

The only way you can detect early infestations is when you observe your garden regularly. Always visit your garden and inspect all your plants. Be sure to inspect the stems and the undersides of the leaves as this is where pest activity usually occurs and where most of the damages can be found. Here are a few tips for you to understand the different signs of pest infestation:

Wilted Plants

When you find wilted, yellow and warped plants or leaves, this is mostly the sign that aphids have fed on the sap of the plants. You can sometimes still find these insects crawling on the plants along with ants trying to protect the aphids as they harvest the honeydew being produced. However, this type of infestation can also bring about black mold, so you can be sure that they are a problem when you discover your plants covered in black and gray spots. Nevertheless, there is a natural form of pest control to help keep aphids away. All you need to do is grow basil, anise, chives and even garlic surrounding other plants to keep aphids away. Otherwise, you can also soak crushed mint leaves or garlic in water, strain and then have the mixture sprayed on the plants.

Silvery Lines And Damaged Crops

Silvery lines around gardens and damaged lettuce crops indicate that you have slugs and snails living in your garden. These pests are a frustration to any gardener, but since there are various ways to control snails and slugs, all you need is patience and determination. You can locate them hiding under rocks and dispose them, create barriers of copper or eggshells, or have a container buried in the ground filled with beer.

Holes In Plant Leaves

Japanese beetles, caterpillars and cabbage loopers are often the cause of holes in plant leaves. Fortunately, they are easy to detect and control. The beetles tend to feed on plants the entire day without caring about being seen, so all you need to do is pluck them off. Cabbage loopers can be identified by looking out for white eggs that are laid on the top side of leaves. Just like beetles, they can easily be plucked off. If you need to get rid of caterpillars, simply place a potted nasturtium nearby.

Dry Plants

Dry plants are also an indication of mites infestations. Mites are small yellow, red or green spiders that can suck plants just like aphids. Since mites have a preference to infest plants in dry conditions, you can get rid of this pest by soaking the plant with water. You can also combine mild soap and water and mist the plant with the mixture.

Top Feng Shui Tips For The Bedroom

by Trish

Our bedrooms were designed for two activities: rest and romance. However, our busy lifestyles, coupled with the need to constantly multi-task or exercise, has rendered the bedroom more of an extension of the office or the gym than a haven for rejuvenation. The ubiquitous television has furthered reduced the bedroom to a gathering place for strangers rather than a sanctuary for solitude.

By using the principles of Feng Shui, we can restore our bedrooms to the heavens they were intended to be as well as increase our vitality, our health and the quality of our romantic relationships.

The First Easy Steps

Remove electronics

Feng Shui for the bedroom begins with removing all electronic and electrical devices from the bedroom, especially the television. If there is a need for an alarm clock, then place it as far from the bed as possible. However, all other electronic and electrical devices need to be removed from the room, including the telephone.

Electronic devices emit electrical signals even when they are turned off. These signals interfere with your sleep cycles as well as the energy in the room. Removing these interferences will result in more restful sleep.

Clear the Air

Another easy step is to open the windows every day so that energy in the room does not stagnate. This can also be accomplished by the use of a ceiling fan, but don’t use the fan while you’re sleeping.

Assume the positions

The principles of Feng Shui state that certain positions and styles of furniture are better than others. For example, the bed should:

• Not be placed under the window because this weakens your energy.

• Be placed against a solid wall.

• Not be in line with the door, which is called the coffin position, although the door should be plainly visible.

• Not be placed underneath overhead beams as this symbolizes the possibility of death.

Headboards should be made of wood rather than metal; padded headboards are also acceptable. There should be ample free space under the bed in order to facilitate the free flow of energy.

Sharp corners should be avoided in Feng Shui because rounded shapes facilitate the free flow of energy whereas sharp corners block it.

Mirrors facing the bed are verboten in Feng Shui. The energy leaves the body at night and will be startled if it sees itself reflected in the mirror; this will cause restless sleep or nightmares. Large mirrors are also thought to promote infidelity.

The Finish Line

Keep your bedroom free of clutter.

Displayed items should be kept to a minimum and only displayed in pairs. In other words, use two candles, two nightstands, and so forth. This promotes the concept of a couple whereas a single item promotes the concept of singlehood. However, twin mattresses should be avoided because this promotes separation. Try to use symbolic items, such as the endless knot, that promote the relationship.

Avoid having an aquarium in the bedroom as the movement of the water will promote the perpetual movement of energy in the room and will result in restless sleep. Plants and flowers promote the very active yang energy so they should be avoided as well.

Your bedroom should be relatively quiet and only items that pertain to you and your partner should be in it. Pictures of friends and relatives should be displayed elsewhere. Use cool and soothing colors such as tones of beige, green, blue and lavender and avoid bright colors such as red, vivid purple and so forth, as these promote the movement of energy rather than tranquility.

By using the concepts of Feng Shui in your bedroom, you can revitalize your romance as well as your individual energy and restore your bedroom to the haven it was meant to be!
