Is Nicotine Physically Addictive?

by Trish

There is no doubt that nicotine is extremely physically addictive. Some people consider it just as addictive as heroin or opiates. No one will argue that once you’re hooked on nicotine from smoking that you won’t suffer physical withdrawal symptoms, however unlike with drugs, the withdrawal symptoms are much, much less severe.

How it Works

Once you introduce nicotine into your system, it immediately starts affecting certain chemical processes that send signals to your brain. As smoke carries the nicotine further into your body, you body begins to rely on it. What is even worse is that once your body adjusts to a certain level of nicotine being in your system, it begins to want more of it, which increases your physical and psychological dependence. This is the reason why many people may start out smoking on a few cigarettes a day and turn into two to three packs a day chain smokers. Nicotine addiction escalates the longer you use the drug.

The Vicious Circle

Your lungs, your brain, your circulatory system and even your hormones are all affected by nicotine. Even though you know you’re damaging your body, and you can likely feel the effects, the longer you use nicotine the harder it becomes to quit. Nicotine causes the brain to release endorphins that make you feel good just like exercise does. In fact, your brain comes to rely on nicotine-related endorphins and the severe mood swings people go through when they try to quit smoking usually drives them to light up again. The fact that your body is so used to “getting high” makes it that much harder for you to quit.

Withdrawal

Quitting smoking is especially difficult because there are physical and psychological components to the withdrawal. Even after you crush out your last cigarette, nicotine resides in your system for up to a week. Most people say the first three to four days of withdrawal are the worst. Symptoms vary from person to person, but common complaints are restlessness, headaches, and bad mood swings. Additionally, you have to break habits like having a cigarette after meals and get used to not having a cigarette in your hand. Many people find lollipops or chewing gum helpful for the psychological withdrawal to help with that “missing something feeling” they get from not smoking. Unfortunately, the only cure for the physical withdrawal is time.

Breaking the nicotine cycle is a challenge, but it is not impossible. Millions of people quit smoking every year. You may have to try several times before you finally quit, but that is a part of the process. Keep trying and eventually you can break the cycle of addiction for good.

Bathroom Remodels Which Won’t Scare Your Wallet Away

by Trish

While you might want or badly need a part of your house remodeled, the truth of the matter is that renovations cost money, something which most of us do not have a lot of. In fact, bathroom remodels are projected to cost an average of $15,789 per project. For this reason, remodeling plans which you have conceived more than five years ago have been pushed to the back of your mind and your budget. But whether you are thinking about upping the value of your house or making a much needed modification for someone who is having trouble using your current bathroom, here are some remodels which you are sure won’t break the bank:

Changing the Grout

Do you want to make a huge impact on your bathroom without having to spend your son’s college fund? Then try re-grouting your bathroom tiles. If you’ve been to old houses, you have observed how these homes seem to have no, if not only meager, problems with their tiles. For as long as the tiles you buy are not chipped and cracked, you can re-use them but breathe new life into them by using a new color of grout. While replacing old tile can cost as much as $2000, it only costs $500 for you to re-grout your entire bathroom.

Refinishing the Tub

If you have invested in a high-quality tub which still functions great although it has already look worn-out and outdated, just like every item after it has been used for at least a decade, you do not need to have it removed and replaced with a new one to have a spa-like bathroom. You can choose to have your bathtub refinished so that you can get rid of all the stains and water spots which have developed over time. Not only is this job affordable with services costing only around $475 to $600, this job can also be completed in just 24 hours. While it is true that you can buy a new tub at just a few hundred dollars, the entire work involved will run for a longer period of time than the former which can lead staggering labor fees of up to thousands.

New Mirrors

Because we never forget to look at ourselves in the mirror when we’re in the bathroom, doing something as simple as getting a new mirror is sure to not be left unnoticed. One of the tricks of really getting the best out of any remodel is to spend time on the items and parts of the house which are often used.

The ABCs of Nutrients for Healthier Skin and Nails

by Trish

You lead a busy life – going to work, juggling schedules, caring for family, attending sporting events and usually fixing fast meals. With little time to pamper or pay attention to yourself, you wake up one morning and find yourself staring at a lined, furrowed and spotted person in the mirror. Is that really your face? When did your nails turn into ogre appendages?

Suddenly feeling as old as you look, you try desperately to cover up these telltale signs using cosmetics, a temporary fix that will mask reality until you wash it off. While reaching out frantically for wonder creams may be your first temptation, it may be wiser to address your dietary habits instead. Check your daily intake of vitamins and minerals. Check the fluids – are you drinking enough water? Are you including antioxidants in your routine? Once you’ve performed all these checks, you are ready to stock up on the missing elements and begin your journey to a fresh and youthful you.

Vitamins C, E, A, K and B-complex are fundamental nutrients for the vitality of your skin, and by extension your nails. The nails receive their vitality from the nutrients found in the skin. Exposure to the sun, smoke and pollution – known as free radicals – drains your skin of its moisture content, leading to age spots and wrinkles.

Know Your “A”

Vitamin A compounds containing beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, and Beta-Cryptoxanthin are found in vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and pumpkins. Meats, dairy and fish contain fat-soluble retinoids that promote healing and repair of skin tissue, and are used in many topical creams.

Know Your “B” Family

Biotin is the “B” that you need for the health of your hair, skin and nails. Eggs, rice, oatmeal are rich sources of this vitamin. Niacin helps your skin retain moisture levels. Lack of it can cause severe scaling and dryness of the skin. Vitamin B12, with powerful regenerative properties, is found exclusively in animal products – meat, poultry, eggs and dairy.

Know Your “C”

Vitamin C helps minimize ultraviolet damage; citrus fruits, strawberries, papaya, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, leafy greens and tomatoes are excellent sources. To speed up the process of reversing existing damage, you can use topical Vitamin C enriched creams that have collagen-renewal benefits.

Know Your “E”

A fat-soluble vitamin, rich in antioxidant properties, it is your defense against skin ailments and disorders. Found in spinach, liver, eggs, nuts and avocados, you can also buy this vitamin in supplement form, or in creams for topical use.
Know Your “K”Topical application of this vitamin, especially for the treatment of dark under eye circles, bruises and prevention of scars, produces remarkable results.

Other Important Nutrients

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish and flax seeds help lock in hydration, and lycopene contained in tomatoes reduces your chances of sunburn. By consuming foods containing these, and supplementing if necessary, your body receives adequate supplies of food for the skin.

Houston Nail Clinic sees the importance of good nutrition for healthy skin and nails every day. Providing laser toenail fungus treatments, the clinic finds that those who eat healthier are also less likely to develop toenail fungus and other skin conditions.  To pay proper attention to your skin and nails, you must pay proper attention to your diet.

Eight Simple Tips For Choosing The Right Carpet

by Trish

One of the cheapest ways to revamp a room or two in your home is to purchase some new carpets. If you want to get the most out of your decision however, it’s important to make your choice carefully. Though carpets themselves are certainly not complicated, choosing one sometimes can be. Here are eight simple tips for making the most out of your choice

Shop Around

The cost of carpeting varies drastically. Price comparison is therefore an absolute must. Though most people expect to pay extra for quality, many are surprised to learn that where you shop can also play a major role in the price that you pay. Some carpet stores are significantly cheaper than others.  It pays to shop around.

Careful About Installation

Regardless of how nice a particular carpet looks in store, if it’s not installed professionally, you’re unlikely to enjoy the final result. If at all possible, purchase your carpet from a retailer that does its own installations. If this proves impossible, always ask exactly who will be doing the installation. How experienced are they?

Pay Attention to Styles

Though all carpet shoppers pay attention to colour, many don’t spend enough time considering style. Carpet styles include Saxony, Berber and textured. And different carpet styles have different benefits.

  • Saxony carpets are very beautiful but they tend not to be very durable.
  • Berber carpets on the other hand are very durable and are therefore ideal for high traffic areas.
  • Textured carpets tend to reflect light. Because of this, dirt and tracks are much less noticeable.

Take a Long Term View

If you want to purchase something unusual for your home, make it a rug, not a carpet. In general, you are better off sticking to subtle styles that you are likely to enjoy for many years to come. Flashy carpets, or worse, those based upon short lived fads, rarely make long term sense.

Maintenance Matters

If you want to relax, avoid cream carpets. Even if you don’t have children and animals running around, a single glass of red wine is all you need to leave an attention grabbing stain. In general, the darker a carpet is and the more patterns it has, the less noticeable the odd spill is going to be.

Careful with the Stairs

The most difficult area in a home to carpet is always going to be the stairs. Not only do stairs tend to get a ridiculous amount of foot traffic, the carpet also obviously needs to be bent over the edges. To handle the excess foot traffic, choose a dense carpet. And to handle the edges, avoid loops, look for the open coil variety.

Go Organic

Some brand new carpets come complete with a pretty distinctive smell and it’s usually caused by formaldehyde. Though the smell goes away, the chemical remains and is known to cause a host of health problems. To protect yourself and your family, choose a carpet made from wool, jute or other organic materials.

Pay Little Attention to Warranties

Finally, never opt for a carpet solely because of its warranty. Carpet warranties are notorious for being very difficult to claim from. The most common warranty provided with carpets refers to “wear”.

While you might define “wear” as a carpet that looks old and shoddy, most carpet retailers won’t provide a replacement unless there are visible bald spots. Warranties are worthwhile with many purchases but carpets aren’t one of them.

Christmas Flowers Advice

by Trish

As children, Christmas is a time when we can hardly wait to get the presents open, but as an adult the key to enjoying Christmas is giving before you get. Simple gifts are the best choice; flowers are one of the best options out there. They are beautiful, have a special meaning and are always appreciated.

The growth outdoors is fairly sparse at this time of year, but that is why we start bringing as much of the outdoors inside as possible. Our bright and decorative Christmas trees not only add warmth to the home but they also bring a bit of the mystery of the forest with them.

When giving Christmas flowers, you can go for a rustic style, if the arrangement has a few branches or pinecones as decoration; you will already have a bit of the Christmas spirit in the design.

Wreaths are also something that should not be left out at Christmas; they do not have to be simple branches with red and green ribbon. Floral accents can really bring a wreath to its full potential. There are many wreaths available now with dried flowers, that will last through the cold months of Christmas and will be the first beautiful accent to welcome your guests.

A favourite Christmas flower is the poinsettia, and this is not a bloom you should leave out during this season. These can be found in the standard bright red colour, but are also available in white or even pink.  These plants can really make a dinner table complete, and are never the wrong gift to give. One interesting fact about this plant is that the coloured ‘petals’ of this flower are actually just foliage, called ‘bracts’, the small yellow centres of this plant are the actual flowers.

This flower is native to Mexico, and it is common practice to use tropical flowers as a part of Christmas décor. For example, Christmas cactus is also a popular flower at this time of year.

Though you will soon see poinsettia blooming on every corner, be careful when selecting your plant. Often the flowers you buy in stores are set out on display for a long time and their quality tends to suffer. If you want to avoid this problem and the crowded shops, have your flowers delivered to friends and family. Some unexpected flowers at the front door are always a welcome treat.
