Riding Out The Storm – The Vital Things To Keep In Your Storm Or Tornado Shelter

by Trish

If you live in an area where storms or tornadoes are a regular threat, and have created a storm shelter within your home, then you may think you’ve got everything covered. However, you need to make sure you have everything you need in your shelter to keep yourself and your family safe and well, as well as to allow you the best chance of leaving the shelter safely and beginning to deal with the aftermath of extreme weather.

Here are a few things you definitely need to make sure you have inside your storm shelter in advance, so you can get in there with minimal fuss when a storm strikes:

A Battery Powered Phone Charger – Plus Batteries

It’s bad enough losing battery on your phone at the best of times, but when you are in the middle of an emergency it is even more of a concern. Battery powered chargers are available for almost all modern phone models, and if you keep one of these and a supply of the correct sized batteries in your tornado shelter, you’ll be able to keep your phone on even when power fails. Your phone will, while signal is available, let you keep in touch with family and friends to check they’re safe, as well as access the internet to get any updates on what is going on outside. It can also help you stave off boredom by giving you something to play with if you’re down there for a long time!

Food for Your Family and Pets

Keep basic foods that will keep you going in your shelter, because you may have to spend hours or even days in there and will need a source of nourishment. Choose things that keep for a long time so you don’t need to replace them, and make sure you have things like a can opener and some forks in your shelter too. While you’re not going to be eating like you’re at a sophisticated dinner party, not being to be able to get into your food is going to be a big problem. Keep some pet food on hand too if you have animals. Bottled water is of course another essential, and keep a bowl so you can also give some of this to your pets.

Documents

Unless you have everything stored online (not on the hard drive of any given device), keep copies of all of your insurance documents in your storm shelter. This will give you the things you may need to start the process of sorting out any storm damage issues after the storm has passed easily to hand, and means that you’ll still have copies of important documents even if your house is flooded or damaged really badly and your originals are destroyed. If you have your documents stored online (something many insurers now offer), you can access them via your phone. However, you may want to keep copies of other important things like your passport and birth certificate in your shelter just in case.

By ensuring you equip your shelter with the things you need and make sure you replace anything that gets used, you will always have a safe, well prepared shelter with the minimum amount of maintenance.

How To Get Through The Most Difficult Times In Your Life

by Trish

No one ever said that life would be easy. In fact if you look around, you’ll tend to find that most people suggest quite the opposite. Life is tough, a constant struggle in many ways, and you often won’t know what’s just around the corner.

In a way this can actually be seen as a good thing. The trials that we go through in everyday life only serve to make us stronger, while the dark periods make the happy moments seem that much more special and amazing. If we never faced and adversity, we’d be weak and easily hurt and life and wouldn’t be the complex tapestry of emotions and moments that it is.

Still, waxing philosophical about how the strife in life is actually beautiful isn’t going to make it any easier on us when we’re facing those tough challenges. The secret is just to know how to deal with these times, so that you can weather the storm and wait it out until things get better.

Because they will.

Until then…

Talk to Friends:       Friends play a number of important roles in our lives, but among the most important is being there to help us through our more difficult times. Your friends will often be able to help you physically and practically with any challenges you may come across – whether that means helping you move house by offering their lifting skills, or whether it means driving you tow work in the morning if your car isn’t available.

At the same time though your friends are also there to listen if you are struggling with something less concrete. Friends make the best listeners, and if you just need an ear then being able to talk through your issues can often make them seem a lot smaller and more manageable.

Talk to Strangers:

Don’t talk to just any stranger – that will likely only scare them. What you can do though, is talk to particular strangers whose job it is to listen or who have volunteered to do so. This might mean calling the Samaritans, or seeing a therapist. Don’t be proud – having a non-judgemental ear to listen can make all the difference.

Talk to God:

While a therapist will listen and help you to cope, they won’t necessarily be able to answer every problem and some issues will still need to go to a higher authority. If you are religious, then spending some time alone in a church to talk to God, or just praying quietly at home can help to strengthen your resolve.

Come Up With a Plan:

All these suggestions however involve ‘weathering the storm’. While these methods are all very useful and can help a great deal though, they’re not particularly proactive. Instead then, why not try taking matters into your own hands by coming up with a concrete plan that you can put into action. It doesn’t even matter if this plan doesn’t work in fact – just the fact that you have one will help you to feel more in control and a lot more capable as a result.

Love Organic Gardening? So Do These A-List Celebrities!

by Trish

If you have a passion for growing your own organic produce at home, you may be interested to know you are in good company. A number of big name celebrities from around the world are also big fans of organic gardening and keep their own fruit and vegetable gardens. From Hollywood royalty to actual royalty, here are some of gardening’s most famous fans:

Julia Roberts’ Educational Organic Garden in Malibu

Oscar winner Julia Roberts started her organic garden not only as a way to help her family eat healthily, but also to teach her children about science and the origins of their food. She grows an assortment of vegetables, including organic kale and tomatoes in her organic garden at her Malibu home, however as this is one of only three of the star’s residences; we imagine she has some help to take care of her plants when she’s away or on location working on one of her movies!

Lucy Lawless’ Organic Paradise Down Under

Most famous for her role as Xena: Warrior Princess, actress and all round action woman Lucy Lawless is also becoming increasingly well known for her passion for the environment. She is an ambassador for Greenpeace, and insists on green rules, like the banning of Styrofoam cups and disposable plates on set when she is shooting. At her expansive 17,000 square foot residence in her native New Zealand, Lucy farms a variety of organic produce and has implemented plenty of green technology, like solar panels, so she can enjoy the celebrity lifestyle without harming the environment.

Nicole Kidman’s Hobby Garden

While she recently told Vogue magazine it was “just a hobby” and not the start of a new venture, Oscar winning A-list actress Nicole Kidman has recently joined her mother and sister in becoming an organic gardener. She started a food garden at her huge ranch in Tennessee, where she lives with her husband and two kids. Her whole family muck in with gardening tasks like planting and harvesting vegetables, deck cleaning and weeding, and enjoy the fresh organic produce that results from their hard work.

Prince Charles’ Lifelong Love of Gardening

Prince Charles was famous for his love of plants (and his rumoured habit of talking to them) long before it was cool to be into organic farming, and has been featured in books on organic gardening as one of the hobby’s biggest ambassadors. He has organic vegetable patches and fruit orchards at his royal properties, and even has his own brand of organic jams and other products. He uses completely organic methods for everything he grows to ensure his plants are completely natural, nourishing his plants with natural compost (perhaps produced by his horses) and even gathering rain water to use to water his plants instead of using tap water.

While you may not have the space and the money these famous names do to create the organic garden of your dreams, it is interesting to know that even the stars think it is important to know where your food comes from and eat well!

6 Different Watch Styles Available Right Now, And How To Choose The Right One For You…

by Trish

I know what you are thinking before you even continue reading the rest of this article. You are thinking who in the heck still wears watches these days? We have so many different ways to tell time with one of the main ones being or smart-phone devices. It would seem like a traditional wrist watch would have gone the way of a landline telephone or even a cassette player.

But this is not the case though. Unlike the two other items that I just mentioned a traditional watch will never go out of style. Watches are for those people who like to send a certain message when they are seen. What kind of message you might want to know?

  • A traditional wrist watch lets everyone know you are a person who is serious about your time and you do not want anything to distract you from being able to see the time. This is not the case with a smart-phone device. A watch sends the message that your time is valuable.
  • A traditional wrist watch can be used to convey status to other people. Some watches cost a lot of money and they are made by well-known brands. When people see a person wearing these types of watches right away it brings up positive associations. This is one of the reasons why traditional watches will never go out of style.
  • A traditional wrist sends the message of what type of person you are. Just like the clothes you might wear or the car you might drive there are all sorts of different watches. This is what will be discussed in the rest of this article.

Now women do not traditionally wear watches, but there are watches out there for them to. But I am going to try and be as general as I possibly can be in explaining the different types of watches and how you can choose the one that is best for you. Before we go any further you need to answer one question. Your answer to this question is greatly going to affect what type of watch you are going to be able to get. How much money are you willing to spend in order to make a statement? The amount of money you are willing to spend is very important.

Some people who want luxury, but are not willing to spend or cannot afford to spend a certain amount will look for counterfeit watches that have the name of luxury designers on them. This is illegal and these watches are usually poor quality. Those who have very small budgets might just want something that is casual. You can find plenty of these options in your average department store. Just do not go too cheap though, otherwise you will have problems with the band.

Now let’s get into the different types of watches there are.

The Leather Band watch

One of the most classic styles of watches there are would be one that has a leather band. It works perfectly for those people who have wrists that are either really skinny or really big. They can be easily adjusted and they look quite chic. These types of watches are made to have a formal look to them, far more formal than a sports watch. They do not have as much formality as a stainless steel dress watch though.

The best way for you to wear a leather band watch would be with business casual outfits or semi casual outfits. You can make yourself look sophisticated, but not overly so. These types of watches are perfect for the person who want to look low key, but still be stylish.  The strap color of these watches is usually brown or black. Black is very common, so you might want to consider brown. Plus brown tends to get noticed more when you wear certain colors of clothes.

The Stainless Steel Dress watch

If you really want to make an impression, then the stainless steel dress watch is one of the best ways to do it. These watches are meant to be worn by people who like to get dressy for any number of reasons. These watches are designed to send one clear message to people when they see them, class. Stainless steel dress watches are best worn with suits and dress shirts. The two primary colors you should focus on with these would be silver and gold.

Stainless steel dress watches are not meant to be worn all the time. A lot of it is going to depend on how you are dressed and what the occasion is. Plus these watches tend to not be cheap. Several luxury brands make these types of watches. Can you find cheap versions? Sure you can, but the metal is going to begin to fade over time and you will have to end up replacing the watch sooner then you hoped. In the end it is better to invest in a high quality time piece.

The Sports watch

If there is any type of watch just about every guy should have and even a lot of women it would be the sports watch. Just about any type of casual clothes you might want to wear will work well with one of these watches. Sports watches are made for people who do not want to look formal at all. In fact these watches are the least formal option out there. You can wear this type of watch when you decide to go out for fun to places like the bar or even the gym.

Now the type of features you are going to get with a sports watch are going to be different depending on the brand you go with. Some sports watches have features such as an international dual clock face. Other sports watches you are going to find will have stop watches on them and timers. This make them perfect for those people who like to do exercises such as running. These watches are not that expensive really, but a high quality one can cost you a few hundred though.

Watches designed to be personalized or have a specific look

There are watches out there you can get that are made to be plain fun. These are the watches you can personalize. And even if you cannot personalize them you can mix up the type of band you have in order to change the style when you want. You might need to pay for the band though. These watches are usually cheap and can be found in many stores. An example of a personality watch might be one that has a certain design you wanted on it or a certain design period. These might work better for younger people or women who want their watches to look more festive.

Personality watches are made to get a conversation going. They are made for people to notice them, but in a good way. You can think of these watches are being sort of like peacocking mechanisms.  Just make sure that when you go for one you get one that goes with your personality and style. Once again, going for true personalization should be the goal. There are lots of places on the internet that offer these types of watches and can personalize them however you want.

Retro watches

Retro watches are made for those people who like to have a classic look, but a look that might still be considered cool otherwise. Think of a lot of watches that were worn in the seventies for example. With the right type of outfits those watches would look pretty good right? Well there are several manufacturers that make watches with a retro look. These watches are a perfect way for you to show off your personality as well as have a look you know few other people are going to have.

If you have some vintage clothing you can use to put together certain styles, then retro watches are for you. They come in all sorts of colors and designs and wearing one is certainly going to get you attention. With modern type clothing they might look a little out of place though.

Pocket watches

If you really want a watch that is made to convey sophistication and class, then the pocket watch is perfect for you. You might not see a lot of people who have these types of watches, but they are out there. Pocket watches are usually silver or black. The face is protected by the metal covering. There is a high quality chain that is designed to last for a long time.

These types of watches are made for those people who want sophistication, but with a little bit of a vintage look as well. One thing pocket watches is they are not cheap. In order to get a high quality one you must be prepared to spend a reasonable amount of money.

Choosing the right type of watch for you

In order for you to choose a watch that is going to be right for you, you first have to ask yourself what kind of message are you trying to send to other people when they see the watch you have on. Depending on what kind of person you are and the type of environments you hang out in, having the right type of watch will make a world of a difference.

Think of the type of watch you want to wear the same way you would a pair of shoes. Shoes are made to go with certain outfits and send a message right? Your shoes are one of the first things people notice about you. Well a wrist watch can have a lot of the same power. You just need to make sure you get one that compliments you well.

Going back to the issue of budget, choosing a watch that is high quality is important, but this does not mean you have to aim for a Rolex or a Cartier. These super expensive brands of watches are only for those people who do not mind spending thousands. But there is another problem with getting these types of expensive watches. Your entire look has to match them. I don’t mean your dressing style, but the cost of the clothes you might be wearing.

If people looked at you and say you wearing a Rolex, but saw you had on Old Navy brand clothing how do you believe this would make you look? You need to focus on getting a watch where the brands of clothes along with the style will match the watch. You want a watch that gives you an authentic look. Plus those super expensive watches are not meant to be worn all the time. They are meant to be worn during times where a little bit of showing off is expected, such as formal events.

Avoid low end watches

Just about any style of watch you can think of you are going to be able to find at the low end of the price charts. These watches might seem good, but they are built to last all of five seconds. First of all the clasps will break easily. These watches usually do not look right, plus the do not take a lot to break at all. Invest in a watch that is going to give you a long period of use and as stated before stay away from knock off watches with the names of luxury designers on them. The market for such watches is huge, but the risk is not worth it.

Smart-phones are never going to take the place of having a traditional wrist watch. Watches are just to convenient and they still serve a pretty strong purpose other than telling time that still makes them quite valuable to a lot of people. If you don’t have one then consider getting one. Just make sure you get the right style.

How To Dog-Proof Your Apartment

by Trish

Walt in crate

Are you starting to get puppy fever? If so, you’re not alone. Spring time is one of the most popular times of the year to adopt a pet! While it’s a very exciting time in a person’s life when you can finally take the step to caring for a dog, you have to make sure that you’re 100% prepared for this type of responsibility. After you’ve made the decision, here are 5 steps to follow in order to prepare your apartment for your new furry friend.

Get secure lids for trash cans

One of the biggest mistakes dog owners make after getting their first dog is not ensuring that they have quality garbage cans with secure lids. Dogs love to get into the trash, and if you have a swing garbage can or one without a lid at all, you’re pretty much setting yourself up for disaster. Look for the garbage cans with pop up lids or if your new dog is known for being mischievous, consider buying a lid that you can lock when you’re not home. This way you never have to worry whether or not your dog is going to dig through the garbage!

Buy gates

Gates and crates are essential when you adopt your first pet, but you don’t necessarily need to invest in both. When you first bring your new puppy home, it’s important to consider how often you’re going to be around and whether the environment is more apt for a crate or gates. If you have a full time job and you’re not home most of the day, a crate is probably your best bet. On the other hand, if you have the time to stay home with your dog and train them consistently, then you could probably just handle training with gates.

Tape down cords

One of the most notorious traits of puppies is chewing. Whether it’s on a baseboard, on your favorite pair of shoes or your electrical chords, they will find them on the ground and they will try to chew them. The good news is, you can easily prevent this by taping down chords throughout your house to ensure a puppy can’t get to them.

Move plants

Be aware that while plants help bring life to your living space, they aren’t necessarily good to have around puppies. Not only could the plants be dangerous for your pet to eat, but they could be easily knocked over and can create a mess that you will have to clean up later on. To play it safe, just move plants to higher areas that your pet would not be able to access!

Invest in towels – lots of them

When you think you have enough towels, buy more. If you’re not already aware of this, dogs tend to get pretty dirty, whether it’s from playing outside in the rain, jumping into ponds, or simply just walking through mud. Having ample towels around to clean off your dogs paws will definitely come in handy. Also a good thing to remember is that during potty training, you’re going to be cleaning up a lot of messes. Rather than spending all that extra money on paper towels, re-use towels and wash them between each accident. You won’t only be saving money but you’ll be saving the planet, too!
