Whoa massively salty soup!

by The Diva

I think I just had an overdose of salt! I had some soup early today – some Campbells Chunky soup and after I started eating it I noticed how salty it was so once I finished I looked at the label and nearly fell over when I saw how much salt was in it!

The salt they listed on the label was only for a 250 ml serving. That’s about a cup of soup. Now if you are only having soup for your meal I think you generally have more than just a cup, especially when the can has twice that much in it. Right? So the sodium listed for a 250 ml serving was 650 mg. It was even higher in potassium at 750 mg per 250 ml, yet if I’d only had a cup of soup I would have only had 130 calories which isn’t a lot when that’s all you are having, particularly if you haven’t eaten in several hours and don’t expect to eat for several more hours. So I had the whole can of soup and ended up having over 1300 mg of sodium.

That’s horrendous! That’s more sodium than some fast food burgers!

I’m in Canada and in a recent fast food study they said that Canadians have the most salt in their fast food and I’m starting to think that we might have the most salt in our canned and processed food as well. I tend to read labels and stay away from overly salted foods but this time I didn’t read the label before I purchased the soup. Shame on me. I certainly won’t be making this mistake again.

I feel bloated already! I’m going to have to stay away from anything salty for a couple of days. Hmmm it’s warm out … maybe I should go sit in my neighbors metal building and use it as a sauna to sweat out this overdose of salt? Nah that’d probably be as bad for me as the soup was!

Oh well – lesson learned – Read the label before buying or opening!

I feel like I’m in school again

by The Diva

I feel like I’ve gone back to school. I’m preparing to go back to work as a nurse and since I’ve been on medical leave for six years I decided that it would be a good idea if pulled out my old medical books and just refreshed myself on the basics.

I know everything is still in my head and naturally all that I know is not in my books because I’ve learned quite a bit from my experiences as well. However every little bit helps.

I know that a lot of medications have changed and or new medications are being used just in the six years that I’ve been off work so that’s another thing that I’m trying to brush up on as well. When I had my meeting in the hospitals Human Resources department last week they did suggest to me that I take a look at the new medications for Diabetes, Hypertension, things like the side effects of hexaghen and so on.

I just wish I knew what area of the hospital I’m going to be placed in. I guess it all depends on where there’s an opening. My old job in the ER is not available at this time but I’ll be trying to get back there once I get back in the hospital I’m sure.

My husbands job is changing

by The Diva

My husbands job at the hospital has been changing lately. For the last few years he’s worked in the Recovery room as an attendant, but the hours are changing there and the OR is in desperate need of assistants so to make up for the hours that he’ll be losing in the recovery room soon he’s been training as an O.R. Assistant for the last few months.

In fact the last few weekends he’s been finishing up his training. He does everything from setting up the O.R.s for surgeries to assisting during surgery when needed. Assisting can be anything from helping hold a patients limb or handing things to a doctor or nurse during a procedure. I suppose if his hours continue to decline at the hospital between his experience as a Recovery Room assistant and his training in the OR he’d be able to apply for Surgical Technologist Jobs at other hospitals or clinics.

Hopefully between the two departments that my husbands been working in he’ll get enough hours. As of right now he’s working 6 and 7 days a week, but that’s only because he’s training in the OR once the training is done we’ll see what happens.

My husbands hours keep changing at work

by The Diva

My husbands workplace is really messing up his schedule. One of his co-workers was going to go back to school so they hired a new employee and shortly after the new guy was hired, but before he started the guy who’d said he was going to go back to school and had asked to cut down his hours said he wasn’t going back to school.

Unfortunately, by this time it was too late to “unhire” the new guy so my husband, Chris, the guy who was going back to school and then wasn’t and another guy all lost one shift per week to accommodate the new hire! So my husband went down from four shifts a week to three.

Now my husband is an attendant in the Recovery Room and he came up with an idea … he asked his boss if he could train in the Operating Room as they’re always short staffed there so over the last few weeks he’s been training one day a week there. Now this week the new guy started in the Recovery room and after the first day he couldn’t handle how busy it was and he’s going back to his old job in the hospital!

Unfortunately my husbands hours are still in jeopardy. The guy who was going to go back to school is going to go back in January and now another coworker wants to cut back his hours so they will still need to hire another worker … so my husband might be able to pick up more hours in the Operating Room now that he’s been trained there .. but he’s now thinking about starting over and going back to school too .. he’s noticed a demand in Physical Therapist Jobs so maybe going back to school for a career as a physical therapist.

We’re just hoping that over the next few months he gets enough hours for us to scrape by!

Spectacle with Elvis Costello

by The Diva

Have you ever watched the show “Spectacle with Elvis Costello”? A new season just started last Saturday and my husband and I just getting around to watching the first episode. Yes we taped it.

My husband is a musician so watching a program with musicians improvising and jamming together can be slow going as my husband stops and starts the program or even watches some sections in slow motion so he can see what they’re doing on the guitar. LOL Anything to learn more ! Even though he’s an excellent guitarist in his own right.

He also stops the program to write down musicians names or names of songs that we’ve just heard for the first time so he can try to find it on the internet and perhaps write about the artist on one of his guitar blogs.

I enjoy the show but I’d sure love to watch one from start to finish without stopping and starting every few minutes! LOL
