Time to cut down on expenses

by The Diva

I’m scrambling to see where my husband and I can save money once again. My husband came home from work on Friday with the lovely news that he was going to be “temporarily” laid off work for the last two weeks of December.

That means he’ll have been laid off for a total of 6 weeks since last December.

Since I’m home on unpaid medical leave we really depend on my husbands income. We pretty much live pay check to pay check … so each time he goes through one of these one or two week lay offs it takes us about a month to recover, sometimes longer.

So … now I’m trying to find ways to save money on our bills and other expenses. I think we’re going to cut down to the bare minimum. Perhaps I’ll be searching around for insurance quotes again to see if we can cut down on what we’re paying for our house and car insurance too since even that went up this year.

New Home Security System

by The Diva

We were talking to our closest neighbor the other day and they were telling us that sometime this week their going to be getting a home security system installed.

They live in a corner house and they have a young child so they’ve concerned with child safety and security as well as home security. Corner houses always seem to be a little more vulnerable to break-ins, and vandalism.

Their little girl has health problems and one of the very nice things about a home security system is that they often have emergency buttons that you can press to contact either the fire department, the police or call for an ambulance. They’re very interested in this feature. I certainly hope they never have to use it though!

My husband and I have often thought about getting a home security system. Maybe we’ll look into the company that they’re using and finally decide if we’re going to get a system or not.

Ready for Halloween?

by The Diva

Our next door neighbors house is all decorated and ready for Halloween. I just noticed that they had decorated yesterday.

Their daughter is two and a half this Halloween so I guess they figure she’s old enough to enjoy the holiday. I haven’t seen them yet so I don’t know what they’re dressing her up as, but I’m sure she’ll be cute since she’s an adorable little girl.

I really like the pumpkins that are on my neighbors front porch. Instead of one or two large carved pumpkins they have 6 or 7 small pumpkins that have painted designs on them. It looks really nice. LOL they usually have things like power wheels and dolls on their porch so the decorated pumpkins are a big change.

We used to decorate our house, but we haven’t for the last few years. We don’t have kids so it seems like a lot of work for just one day. Still .. maybe we’ll haul out the decorations.

Do you decorate for Halloween? Or whether you do or don’t decorate, do you answer the door at Halloween and give the trick or treaters some candy?

I should go back to making jewelery

by The Diva

I can’t believe how high the price of gold is. It just keeps climbing higher and higher. I wonder when the price will start going down again?

Did you know that I used to be a jeweller? Yeah … back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Yep. I made gold jewelery. I worked for a company that made jewelery from scratch – from wax mold, to castings, then polishing and assembling each and every piece.

When I worked in the jewelery trade Gold reached a price of about $800 an ounce and at the time that was the highest price it had ever been, but now that gold is at about $1338 an ounce that makes the jewelery that I was making seem like discount jewelry!

Hmmm Maybe I should get back into the jewelery trade? Nah … I left it for a reason – I enjoyed the work, but I hated the atmosphere. By the early 90’s I’d opened my own business and I worked 16 or more hours a day (like I do now as webmaster!) but my clients were extremely demanding, cheap and well … rude. I don’t want to go back to that again.

A store my mother in law will love

by The Diva

I found a store this past weekend that I’ve got to tell my health fanatic mother in law about.

It’s a store called Healthy Planet. I was just talking about it on my other blog. The store has vitamins, bulk foods, organics, and even natural weight loss products – pretty much whatever you want and at good prices.

My mother in law and my husbands Aunt drive in to Toronto from a town about an hour and a half away from here to go to specialty stores like the Big Carrot so I’m sure they’ll love the Healthy Planet.

The location we went to happens to be near my husbands uncles house, so that will be handy for Chris’ mother if they decide to go to the Healthy Planet store as they can visit my husbands uncle afterwords. ๐Ÿ˜‰
