Time to tighten our belts – tight finances

by The Diva

My husband and I are in a financial crunch right now. We just had to buy a new car when our old one unexpectedly died.

Man … we didn’t have any money to spare either. Well, I guess we had enough available to us to swing buying a used car, but that’s it. Now we have to watch every penny!

I’m now scratching my head and trying to figure out ways to both save and make more money. I have several websites and blogs and that’s the main way I earn income these days since I’m on medical leave from my work. Somehow though I need to come up with a few hundred dollars more per month.

Actually I cam across some Forex training webinars and I was thinking about looking into them … hey who knows, maybe I’d be good at. If I were, it would sure be a good way to make some much needed money! Anyone try this?

We have a new “used” car

by The Diva

Our car died last week. Yes, I really mean died.

My husband had borrowed his parents car last weekend when he went up North to Muskoka for a big party and later to his sisters cottage in Holland Landing. Our car, a Ford Contour, was 14 years old and he just didn’t trust it for a big drive.

So his mom had our car and while she was driving it last weekend the car let out a loud groan like sound and lost power. It turned out that some plug in the bottom of the transmission fell out and all of the transmission fluids came out with it.

Once the in-laws finally told us that our car had broken down (last Wednesday – five days after it had died) we decided to have the garage order the part for the car and fix it …. but once they put it in on Friday the fluids still leaked. I guess the casing around the transmission was pitted so we’d actually need a whole new transmission. They figured putting in a new transmission would cost us close to $3000 and we didn’t think it was a good idea to put that much money into a 14 year old car so we started looking for new (used) cars on Friday evening shortly after we got the news.

Of course the last thing we needed to do right now was buy a car! We’re going to have a very tight budget over the next few months. Groan.

As it turns out the garage where our car was taken (in Brantford and we’re in Toronto) also has a used car dealership on the lot. So we took a look at their selection of cars and finally picked out a used 2006 Pontiac Pursuit.

We couldn’t finalize anything until today when the licensing office would be open, so my husband hitched a ride back to Brantford yesterday with his brother who was visiting from Chicago and early this morning he went back to the dealership to test drive the car once more (test heater etc) and then buy the car.

Our old car is going to be junked. We got a 100 dollars for it. Shame, because it was a good car and wasn’t giving us any trouble until this happened.

My husband transferred everything from our old car to the new car before driving back to Toronto. I think his mom must have left some things in the car though … because there’s a book about healing foods and a pamphlet for HCG diet Austin that she must have picked up when she was traveling two weeks ago. I guess we’ll return those things the next time we see her or maybe give them to our nephew if he comes to Toronto to do Extra work as he has been doing every week so far this summer.

Once Chris got home with the new car we took it out for a drive – and to get groceries. It’s very nice – nice smooth drive. Oh and the radio shows what song is playing. Our old car didn’t do that – I wonder how it knows?

Anyway I guess it’s too late to ask my readers if their familiar with this car and know of any problems … but still, if you do know of any problems with this car (a Pontiac Pursuit) I guess I’d still like to hear about them.

Now to read the cars manual to figure out the car alarm etc …

Time to put that stinky organic brew on my garden

by The Diva

I’ll be spending some time in the garden this weekend. It’s time to put some alfalfa tea on the garden beds.

I have two big plastic garbage cans of alfalfa tea brewing in my driveway. Alfalfa apparently has some kind of organic growth hormone in it and it just gives plants a huge boost. It’s the only thing I use to fertilize my garden. Well .. other than some home made compost and sometimes manure. LOL

It’s easy to make too – just add about four cups of alfalfa pellets to a large garbage can, fill with water and stir daily for two to three weeks. I also add some molasses ( it helps combat some of the fermentation) and sometimes – usually in late spring, I add some Epsom salts to the mix.

the only problem with the alfalfa tea is the smell. If you don’t stir it and aerate it daily as it’s “brewing” it can really get stinky. Even well stirred brew smells. When I put it on the garden I have to put on protective clothing to guard against smell splashes, and I tend to apply it to my garden in the evening – usually after dinner time. Why? Well since it smells I’m trying to spare my neighbors some of the bad smell … if I put it on the garden after dinner most of my neighbors who would be affected by the smell are indoors watching tv.

So .. sometime this weekend I’ll be applying the smelly alfalfa tea that I’ve been brewing to my garden. I’ll give it a little water afterwords – as it seems to help ton down the smell. Then .. about four or five days after my application my garden will start to look great. I’ll see new growth on my roses and the leaves of all my plants will look nice and healthy.

Do you ever treat your garden to an organic fertilizer like alfalfa tea?

I’ve got to start using my camera more often

by The Diva

I’ve been very lazy about taking pictures lately. Actually, it’s not just lately … I think it started sometime last fall.

I have a photoblog that I barely post in anymore. I also have a lovely garden that I used to take tons of photos of – macros of flowers in bloom, seed heads and so on … but I don’t think I’ve pulled out one of my digital cameras in at least a month.

I still enjoy taking photos, but I think it’s processing them on the computer that I don’t like. I have quite a few – maybe 300 or 400 photos – from things that we did in June and photos of our flowers blooming that are sitting in folders on my computer waiting to be cropped and then uploaded to my Flickr account.

Do you ever get lazy about taking photos when you to parties or interesting events? Or are you like me – you take the pictures, but don’t do anything with them once they’re uploaded on to your computer?

I’ve got to get out of this funk .. I think I take pretty good photographs and I should be at least including a few on each of my blogs.

Are all guys bad at packing?

by The Diva

My husband is busy getting ready to go away for the weekend. He’s going up North to a party that a friend of ours is having – on a boat.

He’s been playing his guitar and practicing some of his favorite songs all week. Oh and he’s been printing out the lyrics and music and putting them together in a binder that we just call “The Book”. With the way he’s been printing pages all week I’m glad he hasn’t been color printing as I’m sure we’d be out of ink by now. LOL

I was going to help my husband pack, but I think I’ll let him get started and see how things go. He’s not the best packer in the world … one time we drove out east (2000 miles) and he forgot to pack underwear! At least that was an easy enough problem to fix.

I wish that I was going up North as well this weekend, but the hotels in the area aren’t dog friendly and since it’s a long drive and an overnight stay we can’t leave our dog at home on her own. I just know she’d get into trouble.

Ok … back to work … I’ve got to check on what my husband has packed so far!
