Ow my aching back!

by The Diva

I’m starting to wonder if we need a new bed, or rather mattress.

When we moved into our house in 2001 we bought a new bed for our bedroom … we had a double bed in the apartment, but we treated our selves to a queen sized bed when we finally graduated to new home owner.

I can’t remember what brand of mattress we bought, but it was a name brand and I’d selected a firm mattress because they’re generally better for you than soft mattresses.

I’ve been happy with our bed for the most part, but I remember that the first month we slept in the bed my back ached almost every day, until I got used to the new mattress. Now, for the last year I’ve had a bad back – so bad that I can’t sleep at night unless I put pillows under my knees. I know I have back problems, but I’m wondering if getting a new mattress might help too. Maybe one of those memory foam ones … do they come in firm?

Have you ever wondered if it was your mattress that was causing your back to ache?

How not to sell a house!

by The Diva

Last week our neighbors house, which is for sale (remember the bad renter neighbor stories?) had an open house. Just for the heck of it my husband and I decided to take a peek at the house.

I know the house hasn’t had any renovations … possibly since it was built in 1927 … but we were still curious to see if our neighbors family had decorated the house to prepare it for sale … Uh … the answer is NO. A big no!

The house is mostly empty … which is fine. I don’t think a house necessarily has to be dressed up when it goes up for sale … an empty house can allow prospective buyers to picture their own furnishings in the home.

However I don’t agree with what our neighbors family did. As I said they left most of the house empty, but they put what appears to be office furniture in the living room and dining room.

It just looks … odd.

They also took out all of the appliances! Why? I’m fairly certain that if you’re trying to sell a house for a good price you’re probably more likely to make a sale and get your asking price or higher if you have all the appliances (washer, dryer, fridge, stove etc) in place.

This is definitely an example of how not to sell a house! LOL

I guess it will be a while before we have new neighbors!

Don’t Forget the Fireplace Accessories

by The Diva

Fireplaces are an appealing focal point no matter where they’re located, but the finishing touch is the accent pieces that complement it. This involves both the decorative type, like fireplace candelabra, as well as more useful varieties, such as a fireplace screen. Although a fireplace isn’t normally sold complete with accessories, it really should be.

Fireplace accessories are the gear you require so that you will be able to more effortlessly tend to your fire to keep everyone and everything safe. Although they can also be wholly decorative items that add to the ambience of the setting.

To avoid unpleasant situations, take care tjat you have the essential fireplace accessories close by before you strike the first match. Having everything right there with you will ensure that your adventures with your fireplace will be enjoyable, rewarding, and most importantly, harmless.

You don’t have to pay out lots of money to obtain some nice fireplace accessories since there is a wide range of possibilities available. Different brands and designs will differ in price but if you are on a tight budget, you can find lots of fireplace accessories at a decent price.

There are many specialty retail outlets that sell fireplace accessories and tools nowadays. You can be pretty certain that you’ll get what you’re seeking at these stores. Also don’t forget to take a look at the selection offered in home improvement shops, where there’s frequently many attractive merchandise for sale. Their choices will probably be priced lower than a similar product in a more specialized shop.

If you’re low on cash, an excellent method to get inexpensive fireplace accessories is to take a look at garage sales or buy and sell papers. Getting second-hand accessories can be a cost effective option, but only if the pieces are in acceptable condition.

Additionally, you can find internet sites that are like want ads of items that people are selling or simply attempting to dispose of. Take a look at these sites for some good deals on fireplace accessories. You never know what kind of good fortune you’ll have. Just be alert and you could wind up with some excellent buys.

Getting Started With Your Home Decorating Project

by The Diva

There are many aspects of home decorating which you may decide to have a go at in the name of giving your home a new look. Maybe you want to change the flooring of your home or you would like to freshen up the decor of the walls. However, with some helpful tips to get you started, you can get this important project done and have fun with it at the same time. If you’re looking to do some home decorating yourself but are unsure about where to begin, read on for some useful interior decorating ideas.

The Basics – What You Need To Know

Your home decorating attempts are more or less assured of success as long as you familiarize yourself with the essentials of the job in hand. No matter what you want to redecorate or what your budget is, you first need to plan your home decor project extensively. Making a plan is important so that you keep yourself on the right track.

When you are about to begin a home decorating project, your plan needs to include your available budget, your plan for your ideal new home decor, any limits imposed on you by a rental agreement (for instance, if you do not own the home which you will be redecorating), the purpose of the room or rooms that you plan to work on, space limitations, color schemes which complement (or do not complement) the elements of the room that you cannot control, and so on.

Color is a more important factor with any home decorating project than most people realize. A change of color can give any room an entirely new look and feel. This is why thinking about the intended uses of the room in question are so important before undertaking a home decorating project. Choose a color scheme which will mesh well with the activities that you will do in the room and the feel you are trying to create for the room. For example, light blue or turquoise gives off a serene, peaceful feeling.

The Importance Of Effective Planning

Sketching your plans on paper is a great way to get started with your project. You’ll need a floor plan, an idea of the colors that you plan to use as part of your new decor, as well as any changes in furniture or other design elements within a room that you plan to make. When you plan, you don’t have to use specialized architectural tools. It doesn’t have to be fancy – just ensure that you understand it. It can be a basic sketch just to lay out the changes that you’re going to make. It is essential that all the design elements match, including the furniture, floor and decor.

If you need additional ideas for your home decor project, it can be a good idea to invest in interior design software.

There are many interior design software packages available that will help you immensely with your home decor plans. This can be a big help, especially if you encounter unforeseen circumstances.

All of the tips outlined in this article will be extremely useful to you in the beginning stages of your home decorating and can make all the difference between an end result which is stunning and a project which seems to never reach fruition. Of course, it would be best if you could get everything right the first time, but, remember, paint and wallpaper can always be changed if you don’t like them – it’s not disaster if these don’t turn out as planned. Happy redecorating!
