The Serious Damage That Might Be Waiting To Happen To Your Home (And What To Do About It)

by Trish

The main role of our homes is to keep us safe from harm and to make sure that we are warm, dry and sheltered from the elements. What a home is not meant to be then is a death trap, or a calamity waiting to happen – but that’s often precisely what real estate is. You might not know it, but there are countless ways that your home might currently be at risk and if you don’t do something about them you may well wake up one morning to find your front room leveled. Here we will look at the biggest threats to your home, and what you can do about them.

Gas Explosion

If you have a faulty boiler or oven then this is a serious issue that needs to be attended to. Even if it’s just very old or you occasionally smell gas, don’t ignore it or you may one day turn on the light and find the whole kitchen goes up in flames. Have your gas equipment checked regularly, make sure to be aware of leaks, and invest in a carbon monoxide alarm to make sure that you aren’t quietly poisoning yourself in your sleep.

Falling Trees

If you have any big trees in your garden, then you should recognize these as a potential threat. A strong wind, or rot setting in, can cause trees to collapse in your garden and this could lead to them falling into your property and causing massive destruction again. Even if a falling tree doesn’t hit your home itself, it could collapse on your car or just destroy your fencing or sheds.

The solution is to make sure to check on any large trees to time to time to make sure that they’re strong and healthy. If you notice rot setting in, or they don’t feel overly stable, then bring in a tree surgeon and just remove the top of it so that it won’t pose such a risk.

Flooding

Flooding is a serious problem that many properties face and which can completely ruin not only your home, but also all of your belongings. Unfortunately there’s not much you can do to prevent a flood if you are living on a flood plain, so the only solution is to try and avoid choosing a property that is at risk. On top of that, you should also make sure that you plan for this eventuality if there’s even the remotest possibility of it happening. This means looking for insurance that will cover you against flooding, and it means keeping your most valuable things above ground level.

Leaks

Flooding doesn’t just come from being on a flood plain though, it can also come through your walls if you’re unlucky or seep into your basement if you haven’t waterproofed it. Deal with any leaks or seepage with waterproofing early on, because otherwise it could progress and seriously damage your belongings and your property. And even if it doesn’t – while it’s there it will still be filling your lungs with moisture and your home with mold.

How To Keep Your Home Pristine While Still Enjoying Living There

by Trish

Family homes as a rule can roughly be divided into two categories. You have those that are absolutely pristine with not a spot of dirt to be seen and with everything in precise order, and then you have those that look as though they’ve actually been lived in – with children’s toys scattered around the floor, mud trampled across the carpet, and a faintly ‘doggy’ smell still hanging in the air.

Of course neither of these scenarios are exactly perfect. While it may be nice to have a pristine home that looks like it belongs in a catalogue, that’s not really going to be very fun for the children who live there who will likely be forbidden from really enjoying themselves in their rooms in anyway, and who will probably be too scared to so much as sneeze on the carpet. Likewise, having a house that looks like a tip isn’t ideal either – it will not only send the wrong message when you have guests, but it could also be unhygienic and potentially lead to an accident if you aren’t careful.

So how do you walk that fine balance? How do you find the ‘middle way’ that will allow you to keep your home looking the way you want it without boarding on psychotic? Read on for a little advice.

Design Your Home Smartly

The first thing to bear in mind, is that designing your home well can greatly reduce the amount of work that you might have to do. If you design your property in such a way that it is less likely to become untidy easily, then you will be able to do what you like in the home and let your children do likewise, without worrying too much about your property getting ruined in the process.

For example, putting rugs down in the living room can help you to protect your carpet and these are easy to put in the wash when they do need a clean. Likewise, if you give your children a play room to keep their things in, then they’ll be able to play in there to their hearts’ content without it affecting the rest of the house. Limiting the number of items in your home likewise will mean there is less to get dirty and broken, and will help your home to look minimal and organised. Patterned carpets are great at hiding stains and dirt – so just think ahead like this and give yourself a helping hand with your décor choices.

Bring In the Big Guns

Sometimes though, your home is still going to get untidy and unclean and it’s at this point that you need to know how to give your home a proper reset. If you’re constantly vacuuming and dusting, then you’ll find that you gradually lose the battle against your kids no matter how vigilant you are.

Instead of stressing then, opt to use a professional carpet cleaning company a few times a year, and maybe to use the services of a professional cleaner occasionally. That way you can relax a little about the mess getting made, because you’ll know that it will all get ‘reset’ in a matter of months anyway.

5 Tips To Ensure Your House Is As Beautiful On The Outside As It Is On The Inside

by Trish

home exteriorWith the property market stagnant many homeowners have opted to improve their existing homes rather than endure the stress and inconvenience of selling and buying. However it is often too easy to concentrate on improving the interior of your home and, if you are one of those seeking to sell your current home and to move, the importance of creating the right impression on the outside cannot be underestimated. Whether you are looking to sell your property or simply to give it a facelift, the warmer weather and longer daylight hours create the ideal time to concentrate on renovating the outside of your home for maximum kerbside appeal.

Smarten up the entrance

It’s the focal point of any home so it needs a little care. Front doors are unwelcoming if they are dirty, paint-peeling or faded so apply a coat or two of paint or varnish (and don’t be afraid to experiment with vibrant colours, unless you live in a street of period properties where a neutral black be more befitting). Polish the door furniture or better still replace it and ensure house numbers are visible, sparkling and straight.

Upgrade the windows

Window technology is improving all the time and if your existing windows suffer from rotting woodwork, leaking draughts or the unsightly aluminium frames of the 1980s, then now could be an ideal time to upgrade with modern uPVC replacements. New windows will not only offer improved sound and heat insulation but will also give your property an immediate facelift. Do take care to choose a style in keeping with the age of the house; the position of the glazing bars is crucial. With a wide range of windows at Wickes and expert advice on hand, you can be confident of choosing the perfect design to add a touch of class to your home.

Brickwork and Cladding

In older properties in particular the mortar between the bricks may need repointing to give your home improved protection against the elements and also a fresh appearance. Small areas can be completed by a competent DIYer but large expanses should be tackled by an expert who will also ensure the mortar is colour-matched to the brickwork.

Cladding was fashionable in properties from the middle of the last century and requires considerable and regular maintenance in the form of staining. One alternative is to replace them with a uPVC equivalent which will offer durability as well as being attractive to the eye. Cladding half of your home with horizontal cedar boards is a current fashion trend but consider whether your property would stick out like a sore thumb if your neighbours’ homes are more traditional.

Grow some plants

The modern trend for lawns to be uprooted and replaced with hard standing or ornamental stones can be sterile and unattractive. Simple borders or flowering beds can add a vital splash of colour, window boxes can add an instant homely touch and planters with leafy shrubs will help to enhance your home. Such improvements need not cost the earth but can transform a tired exterior quickly.

Clear up the clutter!

It may sound so simple that it’s almost daft but clutter around the outside of your property is unsightly. Find a new home for the bins and endless recycling boxes, put the kids’ toys and bikes in the garage and sweep the drive. It’ll make a world of difference!

Improving the exterior appearance of your home needn’t break the bank and with a little time, effort and well-planned budgeting your property can be as attractive on the outside as the rooms within.

Top Tips That Will Make Your Kitchen Easier To Work In

by Trish

Day 180 - Bloody washing up

How many times has someone said to you ‘the trick is to wash up your dishes right after you’ve eaten?’. It sounds like good advice sure, but what these smug friends don’t seem to take into account is that it’s not always quite that simple. For instance, it might be that you often watch TV while you eat and that you want to watch the rest of the program before you do the washing up. Alternatively it might be that once you’ve sat down, you suddenly feel too tired to get up and do the washing up after your long day of work and cooking.

Finally though, it might just be that you don’t enjoy washing up because your kitchen is too crowded to make it easy. If you have a small or badly designed kitchen, then what’s already a tough and unpleasant job can become unbearable. Here we will look at some of the ways you can make your kitchen more conducive to work, including washing up.

Work Zones

No matter the work you are doing in the kitchen you will find you need work zones. Work zones are areas that you can stand to work and ideally you should be able to reach more than one surface as well as some kind of appliance. In other words a good work zone might enable you to reach two or three bare surfaces and the hob. This way you can chop vegetables, stir a broth and drop things into a bowl all at once. When you first come up with your kitchen design you should try to think about where the work zones are going to be and how you can include more if possible. Using a kitchen island is one great way to add reachable surfaces at multiple points around the kitchen.

Organize Your Small Appliances

Blenders, toasty makers and coffee machines are all great things to add to your kitchen that can help you to get more from it and provide better for guests. However they also have a downside which is to clutter your surfaces and make it harder to keep things clean. Keep them organized by providing storage for them, and make sure that there aren’t too many wires draped across your surfaces.

Have a Good Draining Rack

For washing up specifically a good draining rack is important and you should make sure that this provides enough space to keep all of your items on easily without it becoming overcrowded. A bowl in your sink can also help with the washing up.

Make Everything Accessible

While you should try to keep things out of the way and off the surfaces you should also ensure that you can quickly access anything you need to from the appliances to crockery and utensils. If you have to root around for ages to find a knife or climb up onto a step ladder to get the tinned beans then you’ll find that more often than not you end up just making ready meals instead…

5 Common Problems Of A Living Room And How To Deal With Them

by Trish

Let’s just admit that fact that the living room is the most attacked room in the house. Even the most efficient of living rooms, come with their own set of seemingly minor, but surprisingly nerve-wracking problems. Like they say, knowledge is power. Therefore, power lies in knowing what problems you are likely to encounter in your-otherwise-tastefully-done living area. We give you five common problems of the living room and of course, simple ways to deal with each of them.

1)   Overflowing everything!

It’s only for so long that you can go on being clinical, before you finally learn to desensitize yourself to the living area turned dumpster. However, a bit of a system is important, it makes existence simpler. For clothes, go for a built in walk-in closet, they eliminate the need to fold clothes at the same time allow you to keep things organized and within your reach. As for books and toys, use big shoe boxes or cartons, and since you have the suggested walk-in closet, you know where to put these boxes. Or, you can intelligently fill up the little spaces all over your house, like the space between two stairs (if you have an indoor staircase), the inside of a coffee or a dining table, etc.

2)   Old furniture with sentimental value

Be it your husband’s beloved cabinet from his FRAT days, or your grandma’s favorite chair from an era long forgotten, if it’s ugly and falling apart, it HAS TO get out. There’s one simple solution that lets you keep the nostalgic mementos yet doesn’t mock your exquisite taste. Recycle. That’s right; it’s eco-friendly, cheap and very intelligent. Recycle the old, chipped, wobbly stuff and reshape it to something more stylish and acceptable. Such an efficiently achieved win-win, no?

3)   A sofa that’s falling apart

It’s fun to see the kids perform circus-like antics on your sofa in the moment of it. But much later, you can almost hear hindsight laugh at you, right in your face. That exotic looking sofa, looks anything but exotic now; thanks to the frayed ends, dulled upholstery, weirdly clumped padding and whatnot. If you know that there’s a great likelihood of you walking down that lane, simply use some dark colored, weather- resistant covers to conceal the dirty sofas. Or, if you’re up for a little extra expense, go for a good quality dark colored leather sofa. It’s easy to clean, long-lasting and works with almost any home décor style.

4)   Bad lighting

Dull, boring white lights do nothing except remind you of a hospital corridor, thus making you feel equally hopeless. Shift to ambient lights, which can be adjusted to go with the mood, be it a quiet relaxed evening, or a classy dinner party, or a home transformed into a club! Use elegant chandeliers or vintage lamps or quirky fixtures to add some more style. Also, ensure that your house allows as much natural light to enter as possible. This helps you not only cut down your electricity consumption during the day, but also feel less guilty about spending on something more creative.

5)   Wrong flooring

Flooring is the one thing in the house that goes through maximum strain. Not to mention, replacing flooring takes quite a toll on the pockets too. Thus, we are left with only two viable options, carpeting the whole area or room specific flooring. Before you consider redoing the flooring of your house, try to consider what goes best for which room. The living room faces maximum foot traffic. Thus, laminates and hardwood flooring form excellent choices. Thanks to their elegant appearance, stain resistance, low-maintenance and durability, they look good even after aging, thus serving as a good long-term investment.
