4 Less Expensive Material Choices For Your Home

by Trish

We are all wanting to make improvements to our homes. But they can be so expensive! Of course we still want high quality when it comes to our homes. But are there less expensive options that will make it more possible for us to be able to actually afford these home improvements that we’ve been wanting to do for so long?

Well you’re in luck! There are definitely some fake out materials that you can use in your home. These are less expensive options, but they will still give you the quality you need to show the pride you take in your home.

Here are 4 less expensive material choices for your home improvement projects:

1. Real Wood Instead of Trex

For Your: Deck

Trex is a great, high quality, long lasting material for decks. It is water resistant, fade resistant, stain resistant, insect resistant, splinter resistant, etc. But it is also very expensive (almost double of plain wood). Instead of saving up for years to be able to afford a deck made out of trex, instead make your deck out of wood.

Yes, some of the downsides to wood are true: it can fade, splinter, rot, etc. But if you make sure to take care of it you should be safe from those potential downsides. Just purchase a high quality wood, and make sure to seal it every couple years, and you should be good to go.

2. Faux Wood Blinds Instead of Real Wood

For Your: Window Coverings

We all love the look and feel of wood blinds in our homes. Real wood blinds are beautiful. They come in a large variety of colors, they are sturdy, and they create a great warmth in your home. But, just like other premium material options, they can be expensive. That is where faux wood blinds come in. Faux wood blinds, sometimes also known as “alternative wood blinds,” are a great alternative to real wood blinds. Unlike many other “cheap” material substitutions for different areas of your home, faux wood blinds absolutely don’t look cheap. In fact, they are a very high quality looking substitution.

And not only are faux wood blinds less expensive than real wood blinds, but they also resist moisture much better than real wood blinds. So you not only get the money savings associated with purchasing the faux wood instead of real wood blinds, but the can also last longer.

3. Engineered Hardwood Flooring Instead of Solid Hardwood

For Your: Flooring

Hardwood flooring instantly makes a home look elegant and classy. But there are certain drawbacks to solid hardwood. For one, you guessed it, it’s expensive. On top of that, it is bad for our environment. There are unnecessarily large amounts of timber that are wasted in the production of solid wood flooring.

With the more premium brands of engineered hardwood flooring, you can still get the quality look and feel of solid hardwood flooring, but for less than you would expect to pay. And because of how some of these cross-engineered floors are created, there is a lot less waste associated in creating this flooring option. On top of that, this flooring is also stronger and lasts longer than traditional solid hardwood.

4. Corian Instead of Granite

For Your: Counters

Believe it or not, granite counters didn’t gain their popularity until around 10 years ago. Before that, Corian was the most commonly used material for countertops. Of course granite has gained popularity in homes, especially high quality custom homes. But Corian absolutely shouldn’t be counted out. It is still a great, very nice looking option for countertops… but it comes at a fraction of the cost of granite.

Corian is quite a bit less expensive than granite. But that is not the only upside to this material. It can be seamed invisibly, it comes in a large variety of colors, and you have much more shaping and styling options than you have with granite.

If you are used to granite counters do keep in mind that you must treat Corian a bit differently than granite. You can’t cut directly on Corian, can’t put hot pots and pans directly on it, etc. But if you are willing to make the few adjustments, this is a great (much less expensive) alternative you should look into.

Top 3 Basement Renovation Ideas That Will Make The Basement Your Favorite Place In The World

by Trish

Is your basement a dark, dingy, and damp area which is used only as a utility room or a storage dump? Is it a shady neglected area where the only occasional visitor is a solitary spider and where the only resident according to your children, is a three-eyed monster who looks more like a mix between SpongeBob SquarePants and an amoeba? No, this is not happening at all. Its time you rolled up your socks and considered transforming your abandoned basement into something fun, constructive and entertaining. There are plenty of remodeling concepts and ideas that you could implement on your basement. Here are a few:

Pool table

Gaming Zone

Probably the most exciting thing you could do to your basement is to convert it into a game room – the perfect get-away from stress, homework, nagging girlfriends and other worldly issues. It can be a place where you can just chill with your mates after work or school. You can adorn the game room with a cozy sofa and a television set for video gaming and watching movies. The other portion of the room could have a pool table or a table-tennis table, or both, depending on the space available and your budget. You could also include other games like darts, foosball, and some table games like Monopoly, chess, checkers and backgammon. So why spend money every time going to the mall or the gaming zone when you can have your very own game room in your basement!

You could also add to the charm by putting a billiards table and a television set where you can enjoy a few beers with your mate over a game of football. With the perfect lighting, study lamps and comfortable sofas, you could create just the right cozy ambience of a library. You could arrange racks and built-in shelves to accommodate your mounting collection of books which currently seem to be scattered all over your house. Your personal library could also station a couple of computers with internet access to help you with your research work and basic surfing or for your kids to do their school projects and other study work. Clever Ways to Use Pressed-Tin Panels to Jazz Up the Look of Your Home

by Trish

There’s an old adage that goes “what goes around, comes around” and this rings true in the case of pressed-tin panels. Introduced in the late 1800s, these metal sheets were widely used in both residential and commercial buildings as a practical solution to cover up damaged ceilings. The fact that they are fire-resistant was an added bonus. It didn’t take long when homeowners realized that pressed-tin panels also make for great ceiling décor since they look like ornate plasterwork without the pricey tag attached to them.

Although their use somewhat declined in the subsequent years after their introduction in the market, pressed-tin panels are making a comeback. According to experts, part of the reason why they are popular again is the increased interest in home restoration. Many homeowners find that these panels are perfect elements to bring the life back to traditional home designs and they also fit in well with some contemporary decorating schemes.

More than just as decorative elements overhead, pressed-tin panels can also be used in a variety ways to add interest to homes. And if you’re looking at redecorating your place and you’d like to incorporate such elements to your decor, here are some suggestions how you can creatively use them to give your nest a bold new look.

Feature wall

Pressed-tin panels may seem like a cold choice for a wall surface, but with their ornamental design they are actually an excellent choice to create a focal wall. Once applied, they lend a truly distinctive feel to the space. And with the numerous finish options and the fact that you can paint them, they provide you a lot of room for customization. One caution, though: when using pressed-tin panels as a wall covering, especially if you intend to use them on all four walls, make sure that you incorporate a lot of fabrics into the room. The fabrics will help absorb the reverberating sound that these metal sheets bounce off to the space.

Backsplash

Pressed-tin panels are also great alternatives for conventional backsplash materials like tiles and stones. In fact, a lot of manufacturers today create pressed-tin panels that are especially designed for backsplash use. They made them resistant against spills, stains, rust and mold and mildew growth. Some manufacturers also copy dozens of antique designs and patterns and apply it on their products to befit a range of interior design. So whether you have a cottage-style or contemporary kitchen, you’ll surely find pressed-tin panels that you can use as a backsplash that won’t detract from the look of your space.

Headboard

Tired of the same old look of your bed? Spruce it up a bit by making a headboard out of pressed-tin panels. All you need is to assemble a basic headboard frame and add the pressed sheets onto it. The raised patterns of the panels will definitely give your bed a fresh face. If desired, you can paint the surface with a semigloss enamel paint so that your new headboard won’t reflect light.

Framed artwork

If you’re not ready to commit using pressed-tin panels on a large scale, you can just use them as accessories such as framed artwork. Simply cut the panels so that they fit in frames. Then paint each piece with your desired colors. Once dry, place them in the frames and group them together on a bare wall.

Transform Your Room Into The Greatest Place Even With An Extension

by Trish

Everybody always has one special room in the house where they love to spend all their time. If you love watching sports then it’s probably the living room. Cooking fanatics never seem to be out of the kitchen. But everyone always wants more. They want bigger. It’s just who we are. Once you have had something for a certain amount of time it gets boring. Mom wants all those big fancy appliances in her kitchen. The ones you can’t fit in at the moment and probably won’t use anyway. Dad wants somewhere more than a tiny corner of the living room to work.

Why don’t you just admit it. You need more room in the house. And the last thing you probably want to do is move to a different neighborhood. You don’t need to. Not if you add an extension onto the side of your house. Apart from the hassle of getting planning permission it’s quite a smooth process. As long as you use a reputable company they can have it finished quite quick. It will cost you a bit money, but just imagine all the things you could do with it. Let’s have a look now at a few things you might be interested in.

Have your very own office space

The trouble with working from home is that it’s hard to get anything done if you don’t have your own office. It’s unfortunate if you don’t have any free rooms in the house. You have to work where there will always be people around. Maybe you are scared of leaving stuff on your tiny desk in case someone moves it and you have a heart attack. That all changes when you have somewhere to call your own. You get more done and the business improves drastically. That’s why an extension onto your living room would be great.

Entertaining guests

Everyone loves to entertain guests in their home. It’s a great way to socialize with friends when you become older, because it’s just not the same hitting the bars anymore. You need somewhere to feed people and have a good drink. If you only have a small dining room then it can be a problem. It can get a bit squashed when you try and fit everyone around a small table. If you add an extension onto the dining room that all changes. You finally have somewhere that’s perfect for entertaining and your social life definitely improves.

Keep the kids happy

It is really annoying when you want to relax in the living room and the whole place is a tip because the kids have left their toys lying around. A solution could be adding an extension to the living room to turn into a playroom. Somewhere dedicated to the kids where they can keep all their toys. You will have a lot of space and the living room will be much nicer. You can have a partition so the kids can play in their room and you can play in yours. And they are right next door so it’s always easy to keep an eye on them.

Give your kitchen a Michelin Star

If anyone in the household likes to cook then you would love an extension onto the kitchen. Just imagine all those wonderful appliances you can install. You’d have room for anything you wanted and would have the space to leave it lying out. Turn your kitchen into Starbucks by having an amazing coffee machine. The kind that makes coffee so good you think you’re in heaven. Add a stone baked oven and make better pizzas than Domino’s. The possibilities are endless.

Going Green: Renovations That Won’t Cost the Earth

by Trish

Must it always be a choice between what you want and what’s good for you? Being environmentally-conscious can be hard sometimes, but it doesn’t have to come down to living with a home that is aesthetically shocking. By using sustainable materials and smart energy-saving techniques, you can effectively spruce up your home and lessen the environmental impact it has on the earth.

Outside the Home

The key here is insulation. By properly insulating your house, you can greatly reduce your energy requirements, which helps to save you money as well as reducing your carbon footprint. Obviously the optimum solution is to hire an energy expert when you’re designing your home so you can install the correct level of building shell insulation, but if your property has already been built you can still talk to the experts to find out what can be applied.

There are multitudes of energy-saving options and many of them are also eco-friendly, involving long-wearing or natural materials being installed in your house. Cool roofs, double-glazed windows, and radiant barriers can all reduce solar heat transfer, while double-glazed windows, partitioned rooms and sealed doors will help to keep a house warm in colder climates.

Inside the Home

It’s natural to be a little apprehensive about applying sustainable principles to your home. After all, green is great, but not if the chair collapses underneath you! It might reassure you to know that sustainable materials can be some of the most durable and hard-wearing substances in the world. They’re also much more inclined to feel natural and lend elegance to the room.

One of the quickest ways to change the feel of a room is to change your window dressing. The correct form of blinds or curtains can assist with energy-saving measures, and there’s a large range of colours and materials available so you can brighten even the dullest of rooms.

Great materials to think about include natural wood, bamboo, marble and stone. Your floor and furniture should be the right mix of durable and recyclable and if possible, you should think about purchasing your pieces second-hand. There’s a great community of interior designers out there who love to adapt recycled materials like old tyres and whiskey barrels into quirky furnishings.

You might also consider purchasing modular furniture, that is, furniture which can be transformed by moving parts and used for more than one purpose. There are incredible designs that function as couches, beds, bookshelves, ottomans, tables and more – all with the one set. Purchasing this kind of furniture means you reduce the overall number of pieces you require. Combine this with buying modular furniture made of 100% recycled and recyclable material and you’re onto an eco-friendly winner!

Finally, when you’re thinking about interior accessories, you should consider the fact that these will be discarded more readily and more often than furniture. Invest in one or two pieces made from a strong material like marble or stone, and the rest can be comprised of materials like clay vases, wicker, river rocks and branches. Get creative and lend a touch of the wilderness to your living room!
