Visiting Nottingham, the home of Robin Hood

The city of Nottingham is the largest of all cities to be found in the East Midlands area of England. Over the centuries it has been home to many different races and cultures. n Anglo Saxon times it was home of a Saxon chieftain named Snot and was dubbed Snotingaham. The Vikings took over the town in 867 AD and it became one of five fortified towns that they held. 


The city is well known for lace production, the town’s fame was for religious scupltures, constructed from alabaster. At the time of the industrial revolution again it was renowned for the textiles that were manufactured in it. Nottingham remained famous for this trade until the end of the second world war, when cheaper imports became more widely available. More recently, a lot of the buildings used for producing textiles have been restored and put to other uses. 

So what can you see and do when you stay in Nottingham?

1.     The Tales Of Robin Hood – Go back in time to the medieval forests that were reputedly used by Robin Hood and his Merry Men. There is not only wonderful films and live shows to watch and enjoy but there is a ride available in 7 languages and you may prefer the experience of a medieval banquet.

2.    The Galleries Of Justice – Trace three hundred years of crime and punishment in the city. Situated at the heart of the Lace Market which means you can find it in the city centre. The site was used as a court and a prison until as recently as the 1980s. One of the highlights of the museum is a reconstruction of a Victorian courtroom which houses re-enactments of trials and witness the prisoner being sentenced and then taken down to the cells. If you have time, you should take a trip around the medieval caves below the courts.

3.    Wollaton Hall – Just a short trip from the city, you’ll find this historic building and its grounds. Tracing its roots back to the time of Queen Elizabeth I this was designed by Robert Smythson and was completed back in 1588. Along with being able to explore the house and the museum of Natural History there are also some five hundred acres of parkland surrounding the house. For those who like to get involved a visit to the Tudor Kitchens is something that should not be missed during your visit to this attraction.

Paris What to See and Do

After thsi most famous Parisian museum, art lovers should still try to find time for the Orsay or Musee de la Poupee.

Another activity that will surely complete your Paris vacation is shopping. Paris is one of the shopping capitals in Europe and the whole world. From haute couture to flea markets, Paris is surely a one stop shop. If you want to visit top boutiques and emporiums such as Cartier, Chanel, Christian Dior and Lacroix, you should stop at the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honré and Avenue Montaigne in the 8th arrondissement. There are also department stores that boast a wide choice for shopping including the Au Printemps and Galeries Lafayette which are the largest department stores in Paris. Of course, the city is also famous for its flea markets that started hundred years ago for those who opt for bargains.

Perth Attractions: Things To See and Do in Perth

Although they share name, make sure that you don’t confuse Perth in Scotland with its counterpart in Australia. Perth is located on the bank of the River Tay and and is regularly referred to as “The Fair City”. Certainly when visiting this city there are plenty of Perth attractions, which will keep all people  amused no matter what their age.

1.  Huntingtower Castle – This can be found close to Perth and as well as being unusual, it is the most well preserved castle in this area. The building itself was built in 3 separate phases and these took place between the 15th and 16th centuries. The most notable parts being the 15th Century Keep, the L Plan Tower House from the 16th century and a small range that connects to the Tower House. 

You’ll quickly discover these buildings have a very fascinating and varied history to reveal to visitors who want to spend time on this. It is a location that was visited by Mary Queen of Scots in 1513 and the castle witnessed the birth of the Jacobite Commander Lord George Murray.

2.  Perth Sculpture Trail – This fascinating display of sculptures are located on a trail that runs for one mile through some of the most beautiful parkland in the city. The Perthshire Art Trust created the trail and the free admission is an added bonus to allow you to see some excellent contemporary art. 

3.  Scone Palace – This building that is a major tourist attraction with it being visited by tourists from around the globe is home to the Earls of Mansfield. Some fifteen hundred years ago, Scone Palace was the capital town of the Pictish Kingdom and was also the Celtic Church’s center. But along with being used as a seat for parliaments and place where kings have been crowned and at one stage was home of the Stone of Destiny. This actual building has been immortalized by the writer William Shakespeare in his play Macbeth.

4.  Kinnoull Tower – This is also located close to the town of Perth and is well served by buses as well as being easily reachable by car. It can be found at the top of Kinnoull Hill and was commissioned by the ninth Earl of Kinnoull. It’s design was inspired by the castles that can be found along the River Rhine in Germany.

Cheltenham: Things To Do in the Centre for the Cotswolds

Cheltenham can be found in the heart of Gloucestershire and is within easy driving distance of the cities of Swindon and Oxford. It is also close to the picturesque villages that can be found in the Cotswolds.

But, in Regency Cheltenham there are plenty of things for one to do and see whilst visiting this historic spa town.

1. Cheltenham Racecourse and its Hall of Fame – This traces the history of steeple chasing right the way back to 1819. You can look back through the winners of the Gold Cup, one of National Hunt racing’s premier races, but you can also find out how Cheltenham has become an Irish stronghold in the world of racing. The exhibition also looks at the numerous racehorse trainers and jockeys who have helped to make this course special in the world of racing.

2. Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway – Steam trains run almost every weekend during the summer between Toddington, Winchcombe and Cheltenham. There are also extra trains at differnt times of the year and seasonal events that can be enjoyed by young and old alike.

3. The Holst Birthplace Museum – This terraced Victorian building has had the kitchen lovingly renovated and inside you will find many items that are to do with the composer of the music suite “The Planets”. You can spend time exploring the composer’s youthful days and also his later years and even see the piano where he composed his music along with some of his music scores.

4. The Pittville Pump Room – This grand building is often used as the symbol of the town and is the jewel of its Regency architecture. It has a commanding view of the lawns and lakes of Pittville Park and is host to many displays and exhibitions throughout the year. If you are feeling brave then you have the opportunity to taste the unpleasant waters which many from around the country would flock to for they believed they could cure all kinds of ailments.

5. Sandford Parks Lido – This is one of the UK’s biggest outdoor pools and is surrounded by landscaped gardens. Not only is there the main pool which measures 50 meters but there is also a children’s pool plus a paddling pool All the pools are heated during the summer season. However, this park doesn’t offer just the facility for swimming you can also play volleyball, table tennis and basketball here as well.

6. St Mary’s Church – This is the oldest building in the town and was built in the middle of the 11th Century. It displays the Royal Coat of Arms and this was to commemorate the visit made by George III in 1788. Another feature which many enjoy is the 14th Century rose window, the canopied piscine and lierne vaulting of the baptistery. Plus inside there are many memorials to some of its citizens including Henry Skillicorne who developed the town’s first spa.

What To Do When You Visit Falmouth, Cornwall

The town of Falmouth in Cornwall sits on the River Fal and is located on Cornwall’s south coast. The actual harbour in the town is the third deepest natural one in the world and holds the title of being the deepest in Western Europe. Certainly when it comes to Falmouth vacations, there are lots of different things to see and do in the town itself and nearby.

The accommodation in Falmouth is many and varied. Quite a few of the Georgian townhouses found in it have been converted either into hotels or into guesthouses. Many of these have the most amazing views of one of the five beaches that it boasts. The first of these being next to the Pendennis Castle, then you have Castle Tunnel, Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and finally Maenporth.

As well as the beaches where you can lay back and soak up the summer sun as Cornwall is one of the sunniest parts of the UK. If sunbathing isn’t your scene, maybe you would prefer to visit the National Maritime Museum and explore our nautical history. The museum’s building opened in 2003 and was designed by the architect M. J. Long.

Along with the port still fully functioning as a cargo one where goods are brought onto the mainland. The port also features on the itinerary of a number of different cruise lines. Last year, the port was host to 64 cruise liners who stopped there before continuing on their journeys. The port is still a vital part of the town and is responsible for much of the local economy.

That said, because of both its location, favorable weather and easy access to the rest of Cornwall, the town is also popular as film and TV makers. During 1935, the actor Will Hay was to be found staying in the town whilst he took part in the filming of “Windbag the Sailor”. Later, the town saw Sir John Mills star during the filming of Scott of the Antarctic. Additionally, Disney used the town as part of its filming of Treasure Island.

If you’re a fan of this era of movies you will soon be able to recognise some of the places in the town as you stroll around that formed the backdrop to some of the scenes. Tourists from the world over still come to visit and the town has done it’s best to keep modern developments away and retain its original character.
