Things To See and Do When You Stay in Sheffield

by The Diva

Sheffield is a very metropolitan place and for many years has been synonymous with the production of steel. Both stainless steel and crucible steel were first made in this city and there are lots of places where you explore it’s history. But Sheffield and South Yorkshire have many other things to offer that one can enjoy when visiting Sheffield.

1.    Beauchief Abbey – This is one of the most beautiful of all attractions that Sheffield has to offer. Although the tower of the abbey only remains which was built in 1175 the stones were re-used in the building of the church of St Thomas during the seventeenth century. When originally built this was the only Premonstratensian Abbey to be found in the West Ridings of Yorkshire. Today you can quietly wander around this medieval site whilst relaxing away from modern stresses and strains.

2.    Beauchief Golf Course – This is one of three golf courses in the area and it stands in the grounds of the abbey. Like it’s two neighbors, this course is one where you can just turn up and play and is easily accessed from the centre of the city and a round of golf here will keep you occupied for hours. Certainly those who do play golf will find these courses not only a challenge but will have spectacular scenery to boot.

3.    Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet – Celebrating Sheffield’s steel history, this is an authentic scythe works, dating back to the eighteenth century. You’re able to visit the house, the scythe workshops, the crucible steel furnace, the dam {and|&} water wheels which were all important for steel production a couple hundred years ago. When you take the time to explore, you’ll start to feel how life was for those who lived in those times.

4.    Sheffield Botanical Gardens – For those who are wanting to find some peace and tranquility when visiting this city then is a place worth visiting. English Heritage have classed this a Grade II site and with several listed buildings which include the glass pavilions. The gardens are currently being extensively restored. This restoration is designed to enhance the original Victorian garden design and restore some of the original varieties of plants that would have been found here when it was first created. Disabled visitors will be pleased to know that their needs are being taken into consideration as well during the work.

5.     Cobweb Bridge – Although only a recently added attraction to the city of Sheffield it is part of the Five Weirs walk.  The walk follows the banks of the River Don which stretch for 8 kilometers (5 miles) and takes you to the riverside path which leads to Rotherham and the Trans Pennine Trail. As you walk along this stretch of the river keep your eyes out for some the unusual wildlife that live along the banks. When you reach the bridge don’t forget to look up.

6. Peak District National Park – Just 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the centre of Sheffield is this National Park which lies at the southern end of the Pennine Hills. So whether you’re looking for an energetic walk, or to climb one of the rock faces, you’re well catered for. Not only is this a favorite place for walkers to visit but also climbers and cyclists as well.

What You Can Expect From A Holiday To Amsterdam

by The Diva

metro Amsterdam

Ranking among the finest cities of the world and one of the most visited tourist destinations is the city of Amsterdam. It is rich in heritage and history, which presents the various facets of its character to visitors. In fact, the more a person looks, the more facets of this Netherland jewel the visitor is likely to discover. And, in addition to being the capital of Holland, and popular with tourists, it is also a city that is proud of the cultural diversity it reflects and encourages.

One of the most lovely and inviting features of metro Amsterdam is the many beautiful and peaceful canals that meander through the center of the city. This wonderful maze of waterways, which is rare in large metropolitan areas, has earned this Netherlands metropolis the honorary title of “the Venice of the North.” Visitors are often mesmerized by the view of this clean and modern city that they are able to enjoy as they gently and quietly glide through different neighborhoods that are connected by this network of canals.

Amsterdam has long been a favorite destination for travelers from all over the world, and it continues to attract more and more tourists every year. With over 700 years of history, including many times of tumult and difficulty, this grand city has been able to survive and thrive by embracing the many people, and their rich cultures, who have come to settle in this area.

There is a vibrant and fascinating melting pot of various lifestyles, customs, traditions and heritages that are evident in various districts, attractions, sights, arts and commerce found within the boundaries of Amsterdam city, and also the surrounding areas which have been influenced as well. Overall, this has all created a wonderfully unique and distinct culture all its own. As well, there are many four and five-star Amsterdam hotels available to the world traveler. There is truly something for everyone in the contemporary urban environment that makes up the largest city in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam NL is also known as the “city of Rembrandt,” the world-renowned master painter. Rembrandt spent his days and created his masterpieces in the historic Jewish neighborhood of the city where visitors can still go to see the home where he lived and worked. Several of the museums throughout the city also give honor to Rembrandt and his work, as well as other well-known artists of the ages. The Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam is another venue honoring yet another Dutch artist.

The colorful and picturesque buildings found throughout Amsterdam Netherlands are a hallmark of this city and is one of the strongest attractions for those who visit Amsterdam. Especially in the old city center, one is dazzled by the beauty of the architecture and the unique and charming feeling that these neighborhoods evoke. One of the best ways to view these neighborhoods is by taking a leisurely boat ride down the various canals, which gives the tourist an incomparable view of these endearing sites that have been lovingly and carefully maintained through the centuries.

One of the cultural aspects of this European city that it has become fairly well known for is the very tolerant position the city takes on prostitution and the use of soft drugs, both of which are legal. The Amsterdam red light district, which is where the prostitution trade operates openly, has even become a part of many city tours. This is part of the “laid-back” attitude that has been in part responsible for the general, easy-going lifestyle that has attracted so many people and which has often converted visitors into residents.

The vibrant and diverse nightlife of the city is something that is particularly attractive to many tourists. There is an almost endless array of pubs, clubs, restaurants and entertainment venues to be explored in Amsterdam, offering something that will appeal to just about everyone. And, for those who are always looking for great shopping opportunities, this is also considered to be a city that competes with the amazing shops found in the likes of London, Paris and Milan.

Car Hire USA & Canada

by The Diva

Car Hire Considerations

Choosing which car hire company depends on a lot of factors and often the determining factor is location or opening hours. The next determining factor for many companies is who do you have an account with. The final factor is who has the most suitable cars. With so much competition there may still be several car hire companies ‘still in the frame’ so it comes down to price.

It is pretty important not to just choose the cheapest quote as that could be a false economy. Work out the total cost to see which is the cheapest. Inclusive rates are likely to appear the most expensive but actually work out the cheapest when the rental is concluded. The inclusive rental includes necessary items such as insurance, CDW, mileage, theft protection, location surcharges and tax.. In this example if each km cost 20p and you did not take any other items such as insurance, if you drive more than only 32 kms it is cheaper to have all inclusive!

Booking through a car hire broker is likely to be cheaper on rentals more than a couple of days but the rentals have to be prepaid. Here again there are differences which you may wish to consider for instance Holiday Autos charge 100% cancellation fee whereas cheap-car-rental charge a cancellation charge equal to just one days rental.

Have you considered insurance. It maybe your own insurance will cover driving a hire car but it may only be a limited cover and the car rental company may well require a larger deposit. You should also check the cover provided and consider carefully the options given by the car rental company as an accident, particularly for car hire in USA and car hire in Canada could be very, very costly.

Before driving off make a close inspection of the car to see if it has any scratches or had an accident. The paint work should be checked but also remember to check the interior, the tyres and low down where the car might have hit a kerb. If you spot any defects report them to the check out staff and ensure that they are marked on both your copy and the car hire firms copy of the agreement. If you do not report any damage you are likely to be charged for the damage when you return the car. Something you would wish to avoid.

We hope you enjoy using your rental car!

Cruise Ship Motion Sickness Prevention

by The Diva

Motion sickness stops thousands of people from enjoying a lovely cruise holiday every year. People can suffer from travel sickness with varying degrees of severity, but it is certainly never an enjoyable experience. It really can ruin holidays and make you long to go home. So what are the best ways to prevent you luxury cruises leading to disaster?

1.) Position of your cabin. When you book your cruise, tell the agent that you suffer from motion sickness and they will locate you cabin nearer to the centre of the ship. This will minimise the amount of movement that your cabin experiences, even on gentle river cruises and will dramatically reduce the chances of feeling ill.

2.) Eating ginger. Ginger has been a motion sickness preventive for many many years. Its natural ingredients minimize the gag-reflex response signals that are sent to the stomach from the brain and will help to stop you being sick. You may however still feel a little nauseous as ginger doesn’t prevent this.

3.) Walking about. You might not think its works but you’d be surprised. One contributing factor to sea sickness is the fact that the boats movement is alien to our brains. If you’re up and about and able to walk around the whole boat for a little while you movement sensory organs will begin to be more comfortable with the sensations and you feel much better

4.) Motion sickness tablets. This is probably the most widespread method and arguable the most effective at reducing motion sickness. These tablets work to reduce the sensitivity of the brain to movement receptors around the body, therefore decreasing the disorientation and dizziness it feels. This also means however that they may make you a little drowsy, so mind which activities you take part in when you’re on them. Your should take the recommended number of tablets at least an hour before the boat starts to move so that the chemicals are already absorbed into the body. This will mean that you’ll be protected against sickness from the minute you step on the boat.

Where, When & How To Travel With A Young Family on Vacation?

by The Diva

Thinking of taking your family on vacation?  Chances are you may feel like you need a vacation just for your vacation!  Let’s face it – it’s not easy finding a destination that’s going to please the entire family, especially if you have young children in tow.  Apart from Disney World, where else can you take your children and guarantee that they’ll have the adventure of a lifetime?  And if you do find a location, what about you and your partner?  Will there be enough nightlife entertainment to keep the two of you entertained?

Here's a clever way to plan a family vacation.  We’ve got the best tips and techniques on how to make sure that everyone in your clan – from the oldest member to the smallest child – has the vacation of a lifetime!

Make Getting There An Adventure. It’s the worse nightmare of every parent: a child who is cranky on a plane, train or in a car.  With a crying kid in tow, traveling mere miles can seem like it takes hours – and let’s not even mention the dirty looks that other passengers are throwing your way!  Yes, when it comes to having a kid-friendly luxury vacation, you’re going to need to distract your kids during the actual traveling part.  Take loads of distracting activities with you on the plane, like coloring books, mini-DVD players or storybooks.  Turn traveling into a game by asking your children to map out the destination that you’re taking.  If you get your kids involved in the planning, they’ll be less likely to throw a fit during that arduous flight or car ride.

Keep It A Secret. Plan out the vacation between yourself and your partner to a kid-friendly location, like Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico or Disney.  The night before your vacation starts, tell your kids to pack their bags for a week – and watch how excited and anxious they become!

Additional bonus: your kids will be so excited about the unknown destination, they’ll hardly complain on the flight or car ride – they’ll be too busy guessing where they’re headed!

On The Other Hand… If you don’t want to surprise your kids with a vacation, make sure they’re involved in the planning process.  Sit your kids down and ask them where they’d like to go for vacation this year.  You don’t have to ask them for specific locations – instead, find out if they’d like to spend a holiday by the beach or hiking through beautiful mountains. When they have decided what to do, next will be to plan the vacation.

Choose From An Impeccable Provider. There’s a hidden factor that can make or break a family vacation – your travel provider!  There are a ton of horror stories out there about families who were left stranded in the airport thanks to errors in bookings, or who didn’t have a hotel room thanks to a booking mistake.  Don’t let this happen to you in your quest for a luxury family vacation – make sure you use your Platinum Luxury Resort membership with a world-renowned luxury holiday club!

With a Platinum Luxury Resort membership, you’ll have unrestricted access to over 5,000 luxury family resort destinations around the world, without the hassle of blackout dates or restricted weeks – and with popular resorts such as Sheridan, Marriott and Hilton included in the network, you can guarantee that you’ll find the perfect resort where you can enjoy a luxurious getaway that the whole family will love.  Whether you want to go to Hawaii or Cabo in the peak season, Colorado in ski season, Arizona in golf season or take a Disney Cruise in any season, your membership offers you unrestricted access to all of these amazing adventures.

Better yet, you won’t have to pay for extra fees or hidden costs with your membership.  There’s no annual fee and no exchange rate, so if you feel like changing your vacation plans last minute, you won’t have to pay extra for the privilege.  Your membership will save you thousands of dollars for your vacation travel, no matter what – so that car rental, cruise or excursion package will be significantly reduced thanks to your Luxury Platinum Resort membership.  In fact, these lifetime memberships pay for themselves in only two or three vacations – now that’s a sound investment!
