5 Common Problems Of A Living Room And How To Deal With Them

by Trish

Let’s just admit that fact that the living room is the most attacked room in the house. Even the most efficient of living rooms, come with their own set of seemingly minor, but surprisingly nerve-wracking problems. Like they say, knowledge is power. Therefore, power lies in knowing what problems you are likely to encounter in your-otherwise-tastefully-done living area. We give you five common problems of the living room and of course, simple ways to deal with each of them.

1)   Overflowing everything!

It’s only for so long that you can go on being clinical, before you finally learn to desensitize yourself to the living area turned dumpster. However, a bit of a system is important, it makes existence simpler. For clothes, go for a built in walk-in closet, they eliminate the need to fold clothes at the same time allow you to keep things organized and within your reach. As for books and toys, use big shoe boxes or cartons, and since you have the suggested walk-in closet, you know where to put these boxes. Or, you can intelligently fill up the little spaces all over your house, like the space between two stairs (if you have an indoor staircase), the inside of a coffee or a dining table, etc.

2)   Old furniture with sentimental value

Be it your husband’s beloved cabinet from his FRAT days, or your grandma’s favorite chair from an era long forgotten, if it’s ugly and falling apart, it HAS TO get out. There’s one simple solution that lets you keep the nostalgic mementos yet doesn’t mock your exquisite taste. Recycle. That’s right; it’s eco-friendly, cheap and very intelligent. Recycle the old, chipped, wobbly stuff and reshape it to something more stylish and acceptable. Such an efficiently achieved win-win, no?

3)   A sofa that’s falling apart

It’s fun to see the kids perform circus-like antics on your sofa in the moment of it. But much later, you can almost hear hindsight laugh at you, right in your face. That exotic looking sofa, looks anything but exotic now; thanks to the frayed ends, dulled upholstery, weirdly clumped padding and whatnot. If you know that there’s a great likelihood of you walking down that lane, simply use some dark colored, weather- resistant covers to conceal the dirty sofas. Or, if you’re up for a little extra expense, go for a good quality dark colored leather sofa. It’s easy to clean, long-lasting and works with almost any home décor style.

4)   Bad lighting

Dull, boring white lights do nothing except remind you of a hospital corridor, thus making you feel equally hopeless. Shift to ambient lights, which can be adjusted to go with the mood, be it a quiet relaxed evening, or a classy dinner party, or a home transformed into a club! Use elegant chandeliers or vintage lamps or quirky fixtures to add some more style. Also, ensure that your house allows as much natural light to enter as possible. This helps you not only cut down your electricity consumption during the day, but also feel less guilty about spending on something more creative.

5)   Wrong flooring

Flooring is the one thing in the house that goes through maximum strain. Not to mention, replacing flooring takes quite a toll on the pockets too. Thus, we are left with only two viable options, carpeting the whole area or room specific flooring. Before you consider redoing the flooring of your house, try to consider what goes best for which room. The living room faces maximum foot traffic. Thus, laminates and hardwood flooring form excellent choices. Thanks to their elegant appearance, stain resistance, low-maintenance and durability, they look good even after aging, thus serving as a good long-term investment.

How to Fill a Gender Neutral Gift Basket

by Trish

Filling a gender neutral Christmas hamper can be a daunting task. It can be difficult to know exactly what to put in a gift basket which could go to a girl or a boy. Finding presents for a girl or a boy is easy but finding a present which would suit both can be a challenge. Finding enough presents to fill a basket can seem impossible. However you don’t have to worry there are plenty of things you can put in a Christmas hamper which will delight both boys and girls. These days’ toys are not as gender specific as you may think.

One great idea for gender neutral Christmas hampers is stationary. Both boys and girls need pencils, pens, markers and paper and both boys and girls enjoy drawing and colouring in. Plus you will also make their parents happy because it saves them a trip to the shops before the school term starts again. If possible it is always a good idea to try and make your gifts practical as well as enjoyable.

Depending on the age of the children that your basket will go to, stuffed toys and teddy bears can also be a great gender neutral gift. Children under the age of eight generally enjoyed playing with stuffed toys no matter what their gender. Just make sure you avoid overly girly colours like pink and purple and you’ll be fine.

Books are a great present which can be given a child of any gender. Books like the Narnia Chronicles, Harry Potter and the Hobbit can be given to children of any age even if they can’t read. These books are not gender specific and will delight both boys and girls. The parents will also be delighted because your gift will encourage their children to read.

DVDs and music can also be great non-gender specific gifts. There are many mix CDs available which feature a wide variety of songs which will appeal to just about any child or teenager so you don’t need to worry about the music not matching their tastes. There are also a wide variety of gender neutral movies released each year which can be enjoyed by both males and females. Including one of these DVDs in your hamper is a great idea.

Vouchers are another great thing you can put into a gender neutral Christmas hampers. This way no matter whom your Christmas basket is given to, they can go and buy what they really want. However consider being more specific with your voucher as opposed to just giving them a generic shopping mall gift card. Movie tickets are a great gift for anyone especially children because it allows them to go and see whichever movie they really want to. Vouchers for music and games for a child’s phone is also a great thing to include because it allows them to customise their phone in whatever way they want.

Finally one great thing a friend of mine suggested when I was assembling a gender neutral Christmas hamper was blowing bubbles. These provide hours of fun for young children and are suitable for both boys and girls. Silly toys like these which are simple but that children get great enjoyment out of are a great thing to include in a gender neutral Christmas hamper.

Exercise Balls: Simple & Useful Exercising Equipment

by The Diva

Exercise balls can serve as excellent exercise equipment. These balls, constructed of elastic rubber having a diameter of around 22 inches to 34 inches, are also referred to as “Swiss balls.” These balls come in a number of forms including pilates balls that are most suitable for pilates exercises, and medicine balls that are used as a training aid for several different exercises. Besides these, there are also the timing balls that help in developing accuracy and timing of strikes and kicks of martial arts.

Low back pains can be treated with the help of exercise balls. The usage of exercise balls also act as a preventive for relapsing of back pain. Core body muscles are developed with the regular usage of exercise balls. This helps in stabilizing the spine or vertebral column.

The balls come of use for athletes of several kinds as also for older people and pregnant women. Particular exercises have been developed making use of the ball in different ways to provide special benefit for specific groups whose interests the exercise ball serves.

The size of the exercise ball to be used is important. This depends on the height of the person concerned. An easy way of determining this is to sit on the ball to make sure that the hips come level or just slightly higher then the knees. Even overweight people can use suitable exercise balls. There are burst resistant exercise balls that can hold over 600 pounds.

Exercise balls work by putting the body in an unstable environment. Thus, on lying on the ball the body reacts and the legs and abdominal muscles contract immediately to prevent falling off. Coupled with some simple exercises like chest press or crunch this helps increase intensity of the movement. Thus by engaging more muscles to work the ball helps make them stronger over time for keeping balance.

They can be used for just about anything i.e. any exercising. They are versatile enough for weight training, abdominal training, flexibility, Yoga and pilates exercises and even for playing around or sitting around. Exercise ball workouts are best achieved by following the exercise ball videos or books.

Exercise balls help achieve a host of benefits; apart from developing the overall control and strength of the core body muscles, they also increase lower back mobility. They enhance the balancing and stabilizing capacities of the body, too.

There may be some harm associated with the exercise balls, also. It has been observed that people often tend to overuse the balls which can lead to injury. It has also been opined that a significant proportion of exercises undertaken using the Exercise balls are quite useless. They cannot satisfactorily achieve the projected claims.
