Safety First When It Comes To Moving

by Trish

Moving house is a task which is often termed to be ‘exhausting’, ‘cumbersome’, ‘a nightmare’ etc. But a lot of people forget that moving is also a job which can lead to some serious injuries.

It involves a number of tasks that have the potential to cause injuries or hurt someone. Hence make sure you take adequate safety precautions to make sure that no one gets hurt in the process of the move. You know your house better than anyone else. Hence, if something is broken and hasn’t been fixed then it is your responsibility to inform your removalist about it.

Make a note of the following tips for a ‘Safety Check’:

  • Weigh Your Boxes: As a rule try to keep the weight of your boxes under 20 kgs. Just because your boxes have space does not mean that you go on stuffing them. This is because lifting heavy boxes has often resulted often resulted in to serious back injuries and other injuries. Also, if there are any stairs in the way try to keep the boxes light as a precautionary measure.
  • Make Use Of Carpets: In weather conditions like rain, snow or even during winter the morning dew can make the floor slippery. Make sure that you use carpets and mats where required especially on the outside to avoid any accidents and it will also ensure that the inside of the house remains dry.
  • Dressing Requirements: Make sure that you are appropriately dressed. If you observe closely, most of the removalists are dressed in proper fitting clothes and shoes. This is not just a dress code, its the requirement of the job they do. Avoid wearing flip flops, heels and baggy clothes as a safety precaution.
  • Take Care Of Children And Pets: This is a cause of concern for many. If you have small children or pets in the house, you need to take certain precautions for their safety. Have your child spend the day with the babysitter, a friend or a relative. This will keep him/her out of the danger zone. Also, pets can be really tough to take care of while moving. Have a friend or someone else take care of your pet for the day.
  • Clear The Area: You don’t want your removalist or yourself dodging your way through scattered things while moving boxes. Hence, make sure to check that the way to the door and to the rooms is clean and free from any obstacles.
  • Lifting and Carrying: It is important to consider your safety if you are lifting or carrying items, whether moving them yourself or just rearranging them for loading or after unloading. Try to maintain a proper posture- bend at your knees, and straighten your back by tucking your chin. Ensure you have a strong grip by utilizing your palms and avoiding lifting a box by its flaps with your fingertips. This will aid in securing the bottom of the box as well.
  • Preparing your Items : A rule of thumb: Heavier items should generally go in the smaller boxes. For example, avoid packing books in large boxes, as it becomes much more difficult to carry them for your movers and also for you when you arrive at your destination to unpack.

4 Smart Tips For An Organized And Stress-Free Move

by Trish

There is no question about it, moving can be a very stressful and frustrating challenge. If you and your family have recently decided to move out of your current residence and into a new house, you will need to pack your whole life and bring it into your new home. Every routine, habit, and every piece of memorabilia will be tossed into a huge, cluttered moving van and will have to be reassembled and re-organized at the other end. Just thinking about it can cause headaches. Thankfully, you can get organized and reduce stress when moving day comes.

There are plenty of ways to make your move easier and more efficient. Read on if you want to learn a few smart tips for an organized and stress-free move.

Make A List

Before you start packing your entire life into boxes and containers, you need to write everything down. You need to create a simple record keeping system. In doing so, you will know what you need to pack and where things should go. As a tip, you can create a printed list of numbers with spaces where you can write down the contents of each box, then place a number on each box you pack. You will also need a notebook where you will list down the contents of each container.

Keeping a list or an inventory of your belongings will help you sort out and organize your things. This will also make it easier for you to find what you are looking for without digging through boxes. In addition, it helps you keep track of what you have packed and ensure that everything is still in place when you unpack.

Sort Out Your Belongings

While you prepare your list, you must also sort out your belongings. You must consider which items you can throw out, donate, or store. If you have valuables and possessions which you cannot part with but they will only add clutter to your new home, you can store them in a secured storage facility.

There are reputable companies offering storage units at reasonable rates. These storage units have different features which includes security, temperature control, and resistance to certain elements. It is best to avail the services offered by storage facilities if you have items which you need to store safely and securely.

Get The Necessary Supplies

You will also need supplies, such as boxes, marking pens, bubble wraps, plain newsprints, and packing tape. When it comes to purchasing boxes, you need to get different sizes for different item categories. You can buy boxes from a moving company or you can get them for free from your local grocery. As a tip, you need to have 10 extra boxes which you can use for last minute items, such as bedding and clothes. You will also need to buy strong packing tape to secure the boxes. Use plain newsprints or bubble wrap to protect fragile and breakable items.

Pack Your Belongings Wisely

Once you have your supplies ready, take your time to pack. Packing wisely will help reduce the risks of breaking things, and bringing items that should be thrown out or donated. Here are a few packing tips you need to remember:

  • Use the right box size: You need to know that bigger boxes are for light items, such as pillows, linens, and clothes. Smaller boxes are for heavy and fragile items, such as books, plates, and glasses. Placing heavier items in smaller boxes will make them easier to move around and have a lower risk of breaking.
  • Pack the boxes until it is full: Do not leave any empty spaces inside the box. It is best to fill the spaces with clothing, towels, or newsprints if necessary. If the box is loosely packed or is unbalanced, it will only be vulnerable to breaking or damage.
  • Place lighter items on top while heavy items go at the bottom: If you are loading your boxes onto the moving van or if you are placing the boxes in a storage unit, you need to place heavier boxes first and place them toward the front of the truck.
  • Pack by category: When packing, it is best to keep similar items together. For instance, kitchen utensils and cooking equipments must be packed together, while bedding, linens, and pillows must also be packed in another box. As a tip, avoid mixing items from various rooms in the same box. In doing so, you will have an easier time packing and finding items.
  • Label each container: You must label each boxes with its room designation. You must also put a description of what’s inside. As a tip, you can color-code the boxes and when it is time to move, mark each room with a designated color. In doing so, the movers can bring the boxes into the room with the same color label.
  • Secure the boxes with durable packing tape: You need to use durable and sturdy packing tape to secure the boxes. You can tape the bottom and top seams, then make a couple of wraps around the top and bottom edges of the boxes. Concentrate in areas where there is more stress.

How to Make Moving Home Less Stressful

by Trish

Moving home is one of the most stressful experiences life has to offer, along with getting married and the loss of a loved one. As with everything, there are certain things you can do to make the experience go a lot smoother and reduce some of the stress. Try following these simple steps to help make sure your move goes to plan!

Have Back-Up Plans

You may have the perfect vision planned out for the day of your move, but life has its own plans, which will almost certainly throw a spanner in the works and veer something off course. If you’re lucky, your day will go exactly as planned, but it’s almost certain that at least one thing will go wrong – so be prepared and have a contingency plan for every step of the journey!

Hire Professional Movers

It’s tempting to try to skimp on costs and recruit friends and family to help you make the move, but with such a momentous and stressful task, it’s much easier to hire a professional removal company. Professional movers have moving home down to an art: they can supply you with everything you need to get packed up and ready to go, and then they’ll do all the heavy lifting and deal with the transportation of your stuff. If you really can’t afford to hire professionals, then you should definitely make sure you over-recruit on the friends and family front! There are sure to be things you’ve overlooked, or things that take longer than planned, so it can’t hurt to have extra people on hand to help – they probably won’t end up being “extra” after all!

Allow Plenty of Time to Pack

Packing is probably the part people dread the most about moving home. Just how exactly do you box up your entire life? Allow yourself plenty of time to get everything done when you know for sure that the move will be going ahead.

Organise Your Packing

By allowing yourself plenty of time to pack, you’ll have the leisure of organising your boxes properly, making the transition into your new home much smoother. Before you even get started with packing, you should declutter your entire home and get rid of anything you won’t need in your new house. Anything you haven’t used for months, or even years, can be donated to charity or sold beforehand – that way you’ll have that much less to pack! You should also pack by room and category so you know where to find things as you get settled into your new place.

Keep Essentials Close

The things you use regularly – at least once every day – should be kept nearby. Either keep these things with you when you travel yourself, or pack them last so they’re the first thing to emerge when you unpack. Having toiletries and kitchen utensils you use every day close to hand will mean your regular day-to-day activities such as washing and cooking won’t get thrown off track by the move. And don’t forget to pack the toilet paper last of all!

A womans work is never done – more cleaning in the basement for me!

by The Diva

It looks like I’m going to be spending yet another weekend cleaning up and organizing the house. Oh and when I say house I mainly mean basement because that is where the MESS is.

Honestly … I don’t know how or why the basement became the mess that it is, but it needs major work. I know when we first moved into the house 10.5 years ago we stored several boxes downstairs – boxes that contained items that we meant to pull out once all of the renovations were finished. Trouble is, those renovations were never completely finished and those boxes are still down there along with multiple other things. It also doesn’t help that this is an old 1927 house with only four small closets – all on the uppermost floor. Storage space is at a premium.

On top of all this … my soon to be ex – oh yes, I said that – ex – is going away this weekend and he won’t be helping me clean up the basement. He hasn’t really done much in the way of cleaning or sorting out stuff down there anyway so far so I guess I didn’t expect much help, but there’s a lot of heavy stuff to lift so I guess if you guys don’t hear from me call for a search party because I might be buried under a mountain of stuff in the basement. Yes it’s that bad down there. Semi hoarders delight.

There’s even a half decent sectional couch with a pull out bed buried under all those boxes, coats, Christmas decorations and renovation supplies. I hope that by the end of the weekend I might be able to see it!

Speaking of sectionals … I might be moving in a few months because of the situation I alluded to above – although I really don’t want to move. This is MY house. If I do have to move that old sectional is staying in the basement and it can be the new owners problem because it’s huge. However, I’ve been looking at this site – sectional sofa los angeles and they have a nice selection. Perhaps if I do end up in an apartment or condo I’ll get a small sectional – with a pull out bed if possible, as those are always handy for guests!

Ok .. I’m going to relax because tomorrow I have a lot of work to do. If anyone wants to come and lend me a hand you are more than welcome. I could use the help and the company.
