Shopping For A Special Someone:

by Trish

When you have a special lady in your life one of the first things that you learn is the importance of flowers in the relationship. Many guys will send flowers to their wives or girlfriends only on special occasions, or when they want to apologize for something. This tactic is not a good one to use because that special someone believes they are only getting flowers out of some sense of obligation., meanwhile, flowers that come out of the blue will make that special someone feel more loved than ever. No matter what the reason for the purchase, there are some things that you need to keep in mind when you buy flowers for the woman in your life.

Location

You want to make sure that you are using a florist that is either located close to the person you are sending flowers to, or they have a delivery agreement with a local company. Flowers that have to travel in the back of a delivery van will got hot and wilt before they should, and that special someone in your life will get very little enjoyment form her flowers. The best thing that you can do is use a local vendor, preferably someone who can delivery flowers on the same day that you ordered them. This means the person getting the flowers will get the freshest flowers possible.

Display

Another thing that you need to keep in mind is how the flowers will be displayed. If you are sending a large bouquet to the home, then this is not a real problem, as your lady should have something to hold the flowers readily available. On the other hand, if you are delivering the flowers to her job, she may not have anything to hold the flowers. The longer they sit without water the shorter the lifespan of the flowers will be. You can avoid this problem by having the flowers delivered in a vase of some kind, that way, no matter where she is when she gets them, your lady will have something to hold her flowers. The flowers should also for a cohesive statement, where the flowers all match each other and the arrangement makes sense; you do not want to send flowers that look like they were just jammed together into a vase because they happened to be handy.

Quality

Finally, you want to make sure that your lady is getting flowers of high quality. You do not want to send her flowers that have bent stems or torn petals, because the message that you are sending her is that she is not worth all that much to you. The flowers should be strong, vibrant and smell fresh. Your special lady should feel how much you care about her the second that she sees the flowers, and this only happens when the arrangement makes an impression. Though price may be a consideration, sometimes it is better to splurge a little bit on the woman that you love, instead of counting pennies.

Flowers are one of the oldest ways that men have shown women that they are important, and they continue to be a mainstay of male-female relationships to this day. A flower arrangement, when done correctly, will make your lady feel like she is worth the world to you, and they are a terrific way to express affection.

I am Sammie Shields, woman and relationship counselor. I wrote this article because so many of the couples that I talk to have trouble communicating unless they are fighting. A man that surprises the woman that he loves with flowers will make a stronger statement about how he feels about her than he could in an awkward conversation. In Canada flowers are the way to a woman’s heart, and men need to know how to choose a good florist. For my clients I recommend http://www.allflowersandgifts.com  because of their ease to use website and huge selection of flowers for all occasions.

Rhino Deck: Making Your Outdoor Space Come Alive

by The Diva

The right landscaping can add a beautiful look and a lush, tranquil feel to your deck space. It can also provide valuable functions like shade and privacy. What’s more, outdoor gardens can provide herbs, fruits and vegetables.

Figuring out what landscaping will work best for your deck space can be a challenge. Rhino Deck offers the following ideas and advice for turning a bare bones outdoor structure into a garden oasis.

First, consider the function your landscaping will serve. Do you want to provide shade? Privacy? Are you looking to cover up gaps or spaces? Or do you just want to accent your space with colorful foliage and flowers?

If you’re looking to provide shade, building or remodeling your deck space around or near an existing tree with a large canopy is one option. Adding tall trees around an existing deck is another. You can also consider installing lattice panels in the sunniest spots, and training vines to climb to create a living wall. Rhino Deck offers durable, beautiful composite lattice panels ideal for just such a purpose.

Vine-covered lattice structures are also excellent for providing privacy. You can also create privacy by artfully placing potted plants in the deck’s interior to cover spaces between rails. For some extra fun and function, choose fruiting vines like tomatoes or peppers, or bushy herbs like lavender or rosemary to create your own vegetable or herb garden. For lower or platform decks, tall shrubs or a combination of trees and shrubs of varying heights can be planted around the perimeter to act as a natural screen.

If you’re simply looking to enhance your deck view with a beautiful garden space, the options are really only limited by your budget, your space and your imagination. Linear gardens work really well around decks, but a free-form garden with sprawling native plants or lush and dense tropical warm-weather plants can look just as lovely, and give you the feeling of being in a secluded natural setting.

Once you’ve decided what function you want your landscaping to serve, you must figure out what types of plants you’ll need to accomplish your goals. To do so, first study the sunlight and rainwater patterns of your deck space. Plants that need drier roots will need to be planted away from deck edges where water collects. Plants that require partial shade will thrive in your deck’s shadier spots, but wilt in full sun.

After you’ve determined what types of plants will be most successful in your space, you can begin choosing specific plants that meet your color, size and style preferences. Then you can map out where each plant will be placed. All that follows is to prep the area, plant your garden and watch your yard come to life.

If you need help designing or implementing a deck landscaping plan, contact a landscape architect or a local nursery for a consultation. For help building or remodeling a deck that perfectly complements and integrates with your landscaping, visit the Rhino Deck website. Rhino Deck offers the best composite decking materials. The company also provides a list of qualified builders and installers in your area.

Show Mom Your Love And Appreciation With Flowers

by Trish

Gifts are our expression of love and appreciation.  Presenting someone with a gift means we care about them, and want to show them how much.  No matter what kind of gift is received, it should be accepted with thankfulness and grace, in the spirit in which it is given.  But when you see the person you are giving the gift to with their eyes lit up and then a smile breaks out across their face, you know you have hit the jackpot, and they love their gift.  Giving the gift of flowers is usually a guarantee that this will occur.

Flowers and Moms Equal Beauty and Love

Flowers are universal symbols of beauty, love, and warmth.  That is why they make such lovely and wonderful gifts.  Most women love gifts, and most women love flowers.  Putting the two together makes Mother’s Day the perfect occasion to have some delivered.

Florists Specialize In Flowers and Mother’s Day

Scheduling a delivery with your local florist is an easy way to accomplish your goal.  They specialize in flowers and Mother’s day, with product geared especially for the holiday.  Gorgeous flowers, keepsake collectible containers, lush blooming plants and gardens, delicious fruit and gourmet baskets, and fabulous gift baskets are just some of the offerings they have on hand.  Having to choose will probably be the hardest part of placing your order.  And they can even help you make your selection by giving you information about their specials and making suggestions within your budget. They can even help you figure out what to have written on your enclosure card.

Favorites Can Be Accommodated With Style

If your mother has a favorite color or flower, tell them.  They can feature her favorite flower in an arrangement, such as a vase overflowing with lilies, or design a bouquet with flowers that are all her favorite color, perhaps in every shade of pink.  You can also just simply leave it up to the floral designer, and let them create a unique piece with their picks of the nicest, freshest flowers they have on hand.  These one of a kind creations are often the ones people love to receive the most, as they are lovely, living, works of art.

Conclusion

Flowers best express our love and appreciation for our moms and all they have done for us.  Sending them something that will warm their heart and make them smile is the least we can do for them.

S.R. has been helping people send the perfect Mother’s Day gifts for many years as a professional florist.

Have Children? Be Careful Of These Dangerous Plants And Flowers

by Trish

dangerous_flowersAs the warmer weather rolls in, many people are heading outside to get their gardens ready for summer.  There are many plants and flowers that are pleasing to the eye.  However, they are much less pleasing to the skin and stomach.

If you have young children at home, you must take caution.  There are lots of plants and flowers that are poisonous.  Additionally, there are several that are capable of causing allergic reactions.

Who Is In Danger?

Some plants can affect anyone.  By simply pruning a plant or picking a flower, you could cause a skin irritation.  Other plants cause damage by smelling them.

However, young children are definitely at the highest risk.  These curious tots tend to get themselves in trouble.  If you have children who are just learning to walk, like to touch everything they see, or put nearly everything in their mouths, you definitely need to keep reading.

If you have any of these dangerous plants or flowers in your garden, you might want to remove them or put a fence around the most dangerous ones.  At the very least, teach your children which plants and flowers to avoid.  Also, keep a close eye on children when they are outside.

What Are the Symptoms to Watch For?

If someone has touched or eaten a dangerous plant, you might notice vomiting, stomach cramps, irregular heartbeat, or burning of the mouth.

The severity and type of the symptoms will depend on the plant or flower.

What Should I do if I Suspect Poisoning?

If the person is having difficulty breathing or is unconscious, call 911 right away.  If you need to go to the hospital, take a piece of the plant with you.  This will help make a diagnosis.  Also, you’ll want to call the poison control center.

  • For skin irritation – Gently wash the area with clean water.
  • For eye irritation – Irrigate the eye(s) with clean water for 20 minutes.
  • If swallowed – Remove any remaining pieces of the plant.  Rinse the mouth with clean water.

Which Plants are Dangerous?

We interviewed a Clearwater florist to find out which plants are the most dangerous to children.  She advised parents to refrain from planting these items.  If they are already in your garden, she says parents might want to remove them.  According to this local florist, these are the most dangerous plants and flowers:

  • Asthma or Stick Weed – This green plant causes skin allergies and can induce asthma attacks.
  • Rhus – If you want to remove this fire-red plant from your garden, make sure all your skin is protected first.
  • Yellow Oleander – Be careful of this evergreen tree and it’s yellow tubular flowers.  All parts of the plant – even the seeds – are toxic.
  • Cactus – If a child managed to swallow this, it could definitely do some internal damage.  More likely, you’ll need to worry about the damage the spines could do to skin and eyes.
  • Hot Chilies – While eating these plants won’t likely be fatal, the hot, spicy peppers can cause a lot of distress for a youngster.  Be very careful with these plants; the bright colors will definitely entice young hands.
  • Dumb Cane – If a child swallows this popular house plant, the mouth will become irritated and swollen.
  • Angel Trumpet – All parts of this flower are toxic and can cause hallucinations.
  • Grevileas – This reddish plant causes dermatitis.
  • Oleander – Every part of this flower is toxic.  Plus, the sap can irritate the skin and eyes.
  • Poinsettia – If children eat this holiday favorite, they will experience delirium.  Like Oleander, the sap of Poinsettias can irritate the skin and eyes.
  • Arum Lily – From the bulb to the flower, every part of this plant is poisonous.

You may desperately desire a beautiful, lush garden this summer.  But don’t plant things that will put your family in danger.  Follow the advice of our local florist; don’t fill your outdoor space with potentially harmful flowers and plants.

5 Gardens In Australia To Visit With Your Kids

by Trish

There are few things more relaxing and cheerful than taking a stroll with your family through a beautiful Australian garden on a sunny day. Australia offers a wide variety of gardens to choose from. Let’s take a look at some gardens that are ideal for a family outing:

1. Ballarat Botanical Gardens

Ballarat is generally regarded as one of the best cool climate gardens in Victoria. It springs to life in March during the yearly Ballarat Begonia Weekend. With many activities for the kids, entertainment, workshops and tours, it’s a celebration that you shouldn’t miss. The tradition dates back to 1889, when tuberous begonias were first planted in the garden. This was shortly after their initial discovery in Bolivia and northern Peru. You will also encounter plenty of roses, dahlias, camellias and azaleas.

2. The Ian Potter Foundation Children’s Garden

Located at the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, this is a wonderful place to begin teaching your kids about plants. The garden is loaded with interactive places for children to explore and play. The Bamboo Forest is an area that is totally defined by bamboo. The qualities of texture, sound and light all change here. The Wetland Area is a natural pond that is full of life. Kids can use microscopes, aquaspheres, nets and a library to learn about plants and insects.

3. Castlemaine Botanical Gardens

Journey around this 19th Century garden and take a look at the original features including Lake Joanna, the rows of oak and elm trees and the carriage drive. The gardens have recently been subject to a massive refurbishment that cost several million dollars. Improvements have been made to the picnic area, parking area, amenities and the garden’s lake. In addition to this, a new playground has also been installed. The gardens date back to 1860, when 25 hectares next to Barker’s Creek were allotted for the botanic gardens. Many exotic trees can be found here, many of which have been registered with the National Trust. In 1867, the Duke of Edinburgh planted an English Oak here. The tree is still very much alive all these years later. As you might imagine, it is quite massive at this point.

4. Morwell Centenary Rose Garden

Located in Morwell, Victoria, the Latrobe Council and a group of volunteers have created three beautiful acres of roses that reside in a park setting. Roses climb on walls and create splashes of color, while the paths below go through beds of Austin, Floribunda and Hybrid Tea roses. Roses that were bred in New Zealand reside at the southern end.

5. Friends of Geelong Botanic Gardens

These gardens were created in 1985 with the goal of promoting the community’s appreciation and awareness of the Geelong Botanic Gardens. In addition, they aim to support the Gardens as a place for recreation, conservation, horticulture, scientific research and education. Volunteer guides give tours for groups and individuals. The Friends Teahouse is available for light refreshments during your visit.

Stacey is a young stay at home mother who enjoys spending time in the outdoors with her 3 young children. She recently employed the services of Premium Pools & Gardens www.premiumpg.com.au to enhance her own backyard in the hope that her children will one day inherit her passion for gardening.
