Keeping Your Pool Area Safe, Comfortable And Fun For All The Family!

by Trish

There’s no denying just how inviting a nice, clear swimming pool can be, especially for children, which is why it is absolutely vital to make sure the area around your pool is safe and the rules around who can use it and when are strictly imposed. Domestic pools are a worryingly high cause of death by home accidents especially in the under fives, and an unsecured pool can also lead to issues with pets and adult guests. Here are some tips for keeping your pool area safe without compromising on fun!

Don’t Even Consider a Pool Without a Fence

Even if you are a single adult or adult couple who feel relatively confident that you can avoid falling into your own pool and drowning, don’t consider having a pool without a high, secure fence. This is because other people, including neighboring children, can wander into a pool area where they don’t have permission to be and get into trouble, and if somebody is harmed on your premises you may be legally liable even if they are technically trespassing. It isn’t just people, either – dogs and other pets can come to harm if they can get to your pool, and again, you may be held to blame.

Have a Lockable, Self Latching Gate

As well as a good, strong fence that people aren’t going to be able to climb, make sure the gate to your pool area is very secure and latches shut behind people. This is especially important if you have kids or other family members and friends who are likely to be coming and going all day in summer – it can be easy for a child who is trusted to use the pool to forget to close the gate.

Keep the Area Tidy and Free of Trip Hazards

Put away all pool toys and other potential hazards every day after using the pool. A pool surrounded by fun looking noodles and inflatables is far more appealing to a young trespasser than a neat, tidy area with no toys, and you’ll also be removing anything people could potentially trip over (as well as keeping pool toys clean). Repair any damaged paving or decking around the pool, as well as pruning any plants or trees that can also present hazards.

Have Clear Rules Everyone Who Uses the Pool is Aware Of

Make a sensible list of rules, similar to the ones municipal pools use and make sure everyone knows what they are before using the pool. What you allow may vary depending on the swimming ability and ages of your guests, but you must always make sure people don’t run, don’t dive in shallow areas, and babies and toddlers are always supervised and wearing life vests. You may also consider having policies for older pool users around banning alcoholic drinks by the pool and making sure cell phones and other electrical devices are kept away from the edge.

Make Sure You Cover Your Pool Securely When Not In Use

Whenever your pool isn’t in daily use, make sure it is well covered with secure fasteners holding the pool cover in place. This will stop people and animals being able to fall in and can also keep your pool free of dangerous contaminants and normal debris.

Exploring all the new features on my cellphone

by The Diva

I was playing around with my cellphone the other day. I had uploaded some pictures and videos that I had taken onto my computer from the cellphone and then I noticed that there was a major software update for my phone. So … I spent some time updating the software and then updating it some more. Luckily everything went ok!

Naturally once everything was updated I decided to explore all of the new features that were now on my cellphone. It’s a Nokia N8 BTW and it just got Symbian Anna. I know there’s yet another update that some people are getting but it’s not in my area yet.

The new maps are very cool so I decided to try them out when I was walking the dog. It was a very cold day so the gps was a little slow calculating my route when I made turns that it didn’t anticipate but otherwise it worked great. I really hadn’t used that feature or the maps for driving before, but I should because, well with this phone I don’t need a separate GPS navigation device.

Now I want to find new apps to download onto my phone. I was looking at an app that’s similar to Instagram earlier today that I might put on my phone. Watch my tweets for some cool pictures soon!

Have you investigated all of the cool features on your smartphone? There’s just so much stuff isn’t there?

The start of another Staycation

by The Diva

My husband has next week off work. No he’s not on holiday. Unfortunately he’s on temporary lay off from work, but you know what, we’re going to treat it like a holiday. We’re just not going to spend much money – because we don’t have any to spend!

I realized the other day that we haven’t brought our dog to the dog beach yet this year. We normally bring her several times each summer. It’s very odd that we haven’t brought her to Cherry beach yet. So … unless the weather is bad on Monday I think we’re going to go to the beach. Chris and I can camp out on the sand and Midnight can frolic in the water like she loves to do.

Maybe later in the week we’ll get the hitch bike racks on the car and take our bikes to a park with some great bike trails and go for a really good bike ride. If my knee can handle it of course.

I guess you’d call this a staycation. Oh and the Beaches Jazz Festival is on right now, with the Beaches Street Jazzfestival being on next week when my husband is off … so well definitely go and do that. We can even bring the dog to that one if we want. So this is ok. It’s great that we live in a city with so much to do!

Our friend is finally getting married

by The Diva

I was talking with a very good friend of ours earlier today. I’ve always thought of him as a confirmed bachelor a la George Clooney … but it seems I was wrong, so very wrong.

He’s had a girlfriend for about two and a half years and it seems that he’s ready to make it permanent. Just having the girlfriend for this long has been a record. I’ve known this guy for about 25 years and prior to this I’ve never known him to see a girl for longer than about two weeks! So you can imagine my surprise when this relationship lasted and lasted and now when he told me earlier today that he wants me help finding an engagement ring.

I think I just about fainted when he told me he was about to get engaged. He really should have told me to be sure I was sitting down. LOL

I guess sometime next week we’ll meet up and go out and look for the perfect engagement ring. I used to be a jeweler so I still have some great contacts that we can use to get him a very good deal. My husband was a jeweler as well so I’m sure he’ll have some input as well. In the meantime I told him to take a look at various Semi mount diamond ring styles to get an idea of what he thinks his fiance to be might like.

Hopefully he has an idea of what kind of style she’d like. If he really doesn’t seem to have a clue when we go out looking I might suggest that he proposes without a ring and then lets her have some input on her engagement ring. Not quite as romantic, but it’s better than totally hating your ring.

A belate birthday party for my niece

by The Diva

I think we’re going to the inlaws this weekend. My sister in law is going to be there with her young daughter and we’re going to have a belated birthday celebration for her.

I’m making a cake on Friday to bring with us and I have to remember to get some rc batteries for a toy that I bought for her too. I love parties for kids. Unfortunately I don’t think there’s really going to be any other kids at the party, but I’m sure my niece will enjoy her belated birthday party anyway … who doesn’t enjoy a second or third or forth birthday party?
