DIY Gift Ideas For Every Occasion

by Trish

Sacchetti saponosiHolidays, birthdays and every day celebrations can certainly be events to look forward to, but not when you have difficulty with finding the perfect gift to give. While some people were born to give gifts, the truth is, most of us aren’t very good at it. Rather than getting something for someone that is simply materialistic and not thoughtful, why not save your money and make something yourself. These DIY gift ideas are perfect for any occasion and are guaranteed to be a hit!

Pictures

A picture is worth a thousand words, right? What’s so great about giving a picture to someone is that it evokes memories and feelings of a previous event, whether they make you think back to when you were younger, someone who has passed or of people who you think about every single day.

Some creative DIY ideas around pictures:

  • Picture frame wreath – By gluing small frames from the dollar store to a wreath, you’ll have the opportunity to remind the gift recipient of why you care so much about them.
  • Picture magnet – Add an adhesive magnet to the back of a picture frame to make it magnetic and easy to move wherever you want it to go.
  • Canvas print – The idea of printing an image to a large canvas has grown to become very popular, and there’s good reason why. Canvas prints allow you to blow up a picture without having to really worry too much about the quality of the picture, and rather than paying a lot of money for a blown up picture and then having to frame it, a canvas print is just the image printed on the canvas, no frame necessary!

Coasters

While this gift might not come off as a personal or thoughtful gift, there are a lot of great DIY ideas that you can create for coasters. For example, if the gift is needed around Christmas time, you can visit local fresh Christmas tree farms to collect discarded tree rounds. After coating them with polyurethane to create round coasters, this gift is bumped up to awesome.

Some other great coaster ideas include:

  • Stamped tiles – Using inexpensive tiles from a home improvement store, you can stamp or etch whatever design you’d like to personalize these coasters.
  • Scrabble pieces glued together – Whether you have an old game of scrabble or you found one at the thrift store, these letters can easily be glued together for a set of fun word coasters.
  • Circular cork with old maps or jute – Cover circles of cork or thrift store coasters with jute or old maps using glue or mod podge for a creative set of coasters.

Bath and beauty products

For someone who needs some serious pampering, these gift ideas are absolutely perfect. While bath and beauty products have always been a go-to gift idea, think about how much more it will mean to the recipient when they find out that you made the item yourself.

Some bath and beauty gift ideas include:

  • Sugar scrubs
  • Lavendar sachets
  • Hand-carved soap
  • Lip gloss

Food

Edible gifts are usually a big hit, whether it’s the holidays or the middle of summer. What makes the DIY food gifts so special is the fact that you know the exact ingredients that are going into your gift, which allows you to decide how healthy you’d like it to be.

Here are some really unique DIY food ideas:

  • Edible wreath – Attach clothespins to a cardboard ring to create a colorful wreath. Clip tea bags, hot chocolate packets, spice packets, or even seed packets for a unique and useful gift.
  • Homemade vanilla – Mix good quality vodka with vanilla beans in a pretty glass bottle. Just keep in mind that “brewing” takes up to eight weeks!
  • Spice rubs – There are several recipes on the Internet that you can find for spice rubs. Combine spices in a pretty jar with a suggested use for a quick, yet thoughtful gift.

Extreme Home Decorating Ideas for This Holiday Season

by Trish

Ah, the joys of driving through your neighborhood around the holidays “oooh”ing and “ahhh”ing over the lights and joyous decorations that you see as you pass by each house. It’s a beautiful sight to see – so joyous and warm and inviting – it really is the epitome of the holiday spirit.

But there’s always an inner battle between your household and your neighbors between who can have the best holiday decorations each year, and it’s a battle that you just might win if you take some of these extreme home decorating ideas for this holiday season.

A Walk-In Gingerbread House

At Halloween, there are haunted houses. During the holidays, why not set up a walk-through gingerbread house in your yard?

Your house will be the attraction of the neighborhood, especially among the kids, if you set up a house that’s decorated from top to bottom in twinkling lights and fresh green wreaths. Inside, set up a display similar to those you see in malls when Santa visits – put in a big throne and have someone manning the Santa station at all times so kids can come visit and sit on his lap to tell him what they want for Christmas.

Make sure you decorate with lots of over-sized decorations. Think about a regular gingerbread house with all of the candy canes and gumdrops and pretty decor and replicate those same decorations on a much larger scale for a wildly successful walk-in holiday gingerbread house!

Santa and Sleigh on the Roof

No holiday house is complete until it’s decorated with a life size Santa sitting in a huge sleigh atop the roof of the house. And don’t forget the reindeer, too! Nine giant reindeer, including Rudolph, of course, make for a complete Santa scene that looks as real as can be.

For added effect, rig up some heavy-duty wiring into a nearby tree next to your house. Install the first few reindeer in the pack so that they look like they are lifting off up and away into the sky by securing them to the anchored wire. The neighborhood kids will love the illusion, and you’ll revel in knowing that no one else in your neighborhood thought of the idea before you!

A Singing Choir of Angels

Fortunately for you, this scene is fairly easy to pull of thanks to modern technology. All you really have to do is buy a few huge lit choir angels and place them in your yard. You can even buy ones that are attached to motors so that they move, or you can always install your own motors to customize the movement of your angels.

Then, all of you have to do is play some music around the display that goes with the movement of your angels, and you have yourself a giant singing choir of angels. Choose songs that are more hymnal than the classic holiday jingles, but be sure to mix those in here and there, too.

A Huge Christmas Tree

Nothing says the holidays like a giant Christmas tree in your yard that’s decked out in lights, ribbons and garland galore.

Choose the largest tree in your yard, or even bring in one from another location (we’re talking huge Christmas trees, like along the lines of the Rockefeller Plaza tree) and bring in the fire department with their huge ladders to help you get the lights strung all the way to the top of the tree. Don’t forget a large lit-up star on top of the tree to complete your holiday yard, and be sure to add the little details, too, like the ribbons and garland!

Your yard will be sure to be a hit with these extreme holiday decoration ideas – but remember to be creative, be original and don’t be afraid to go over the top!

I want a real vacation this summer

by The Diva

I haven’t been on a holiday in ages. I was just thinking about it and realized that my husband and I really haven’t been anywhere for quite a while. We didn’t go anywhere for vacation last year or the year before …. so this year I think we should try to go somewhere.

I keep hearing about Outer Banks vacation rentals so I might look into that as place for us to go this coming July.

Have you been to the Outer Banks? If you have, do you have any suggestions as to what we can do there? Did you enjoy your time there?

Finding A Discount Flight On The Internet

by The Diva

Many frequent flyers appear to be conversing more about airfare deals and getting the best price at the best possible time to travel. At many different places around the World, ticket prices seem to fluctuate significantly. However, it is possible to fly to many destinations for considerably less than the full standard fare, with the assistance of a good travel agent and a little research.

A key factor to getting a good deal is flexibility. To save money airlines will slot people into empty seats, so if you’re willing to modify your dates to suit the airlines program, then you can benefit on their decision. A hefty cancellation fee will be charged against you by many airlines, if after you have booked your flight, you switch the date.

Cheap airfare deals can be found everywhere you look on the internet. Have a look at a review flight website like Virgin Cheap Travel. There are many airfare reviews of the major airlines helping you find the deal and pice of mind you need when booking.

Frequent flyer usually end up getting the best deals when looking for discount flights. The numerous ‘Frequent Flyer’ programs usually provide incentives for customer loyalty. Usually you will earn points as a regular flyer which can be exchanged for flight tickets of other goods.

The internet is the number one source for finding online deals. Beware of the internet sites that are specializing in selling airline tickets at a discount, they could be legitimate but it is always best to book your flight with known discount agents. {The problem is that people often have a hard time in confirming the legitimacy of these sites before they are committed to making a payment. It is very difficult to tell whether these sites are legitimate or not.} Try telephoning the booking of your flight or even visit their offices if they are local. If the company if of good standing they should have a telephone number on the site. Find out exactly which airline you have booked your flight with, that is important to know.

On a daily basis the number of airline deals are on the increase as competition in the skies increases.
