I feel like I’m in school again

by The Diva

I feel like I’ve gone back to school. I’m preparing to go back to work as a nurse and since I’ve been on medical leave for six years I decided that it would be a good idea if pulled out my old medical books and just refreshed myself on the basics.

I know everything is still in my head and naturally all that I know is not in my books because I’ve learned quite a bit from my experiences as well. However every little bit helps.

I know that a lot of medications have changed and or new medications are being used just in the six years that I’ve been off work so that’s another thing that I’m trying to brush up on as well. When I had my meeting in the hospitals Human Resources department last week they did suggest to me that I take a look at the new medications for Diabetes, Hypertension, things like the side effects of hexaghen and so on.

I just wish I knew what area of the hospital I’m going to be placed in. I guess it all depends on where there’s an opening. My old job in the ER is not available at this time but I’ll be trying to get back there once I get back in the hospital I’m sure.

More medical tests – how fun!

by The Diva

It seems to be that time of year again when I end up getting a bunch of tests done at the hospital. I’m due for my six month recheck on a lump in my right breast. Yeah – kind of scary but my doctor wasn’t too worried with the first test results.

The only real problem is that as I said, this is my 6 month retest and the first mammogram and ultrasound was in June of 2011 … and guess when my new ultrasound is scheduled? At the beginning of June this year! I don’t even know when the mammogram is scheduled yet – they haven’t contacted me with an appointment as of yet. Usually it doesn’t take that long to get a mammogram appointment though so I’ll probably have that one within a month and since the result will be odd my ultrasound will probably get bumped up.

Then later in the year I need to have a biopsy on my thyroid. That’s becoming a regular yearly thing as well since I have a tumor in my right thyroid as well. Hmmm … everything’s on the right side it seems. I’ve always had a Thyroid imbalance but I’ve also had growths on my thyroid as well. I ended up having my left thyroid removed several years ago and now it looks like I might end up having the right side taken out sometime in the near future too. I guess I’ll just have to keep hoping that the test and biopsy results turn out ok.

Change of Schedule

by The Diva

Strange … my husband came home from work yesterday telling me that his schedule had changed. Normally – well lately anyway, he’s been working on Saturday evenings and having Sundays and Mondays off … but his boss decided to switch his schedule with someone else’s because another worker was away so he said he was going to work Monday to Friday this coming week and not work this evening.

Well guess what … at about 3:35 pm our phone rings and it’s the hospital asking where Chris is … he’s still on the schedule and he’s supposed to be working! He ran out of here so fast he forgot his ID tags! He needs his ID card when he’s working to get into special employee only areas. I noticed that he’d forgotten his Id right after he left but he was two blocks away by then (he can walk to work from here) so I grabbed my coat and put a leash on the dog and went after him but he didn’t come back out of the hospital like I thought he would when he realized he’d forgot his ID. Apparently he got some kind of temporary ID made. So I wasted my time and froze my butt outside … but the dog did get an extra walk so I guess that was ok.

Too skinny?

by The Diva

Over the last month or so I’ve noticed that my husband has lost quite a bit of weight. Not that he really needed to lose weight. Oh sure just about everyone can stand to lose five or ten pounds, but about a month ago I started thinking .. geez he’s getting pretty skinny … I started to get worried that he was losing too much weight.

It’s not like he’s been trying to lose weight or that’s he’s found the best weight loss pill ever or anything … I think he’s just been walking a lot more lately and just eating a little less. Nothing too drastic – but it suddenly started to show – fast.

We were in a store earlier today and someone that worked with my husband at the hospital but hadn’t seen him in a while came up to us and made a big deal out of how skinny my husband looked. He actually said it made my husband look older … maybe that will make him eat a bit more? LOL

Anyway .. hopefully my husband doesn’t keep losing weight or I’m going to think something is seriously wrong with him.

My husbands job is changing

by The Diva

My husbands job at the hospital has been changing lately. For the last few years he’s worked in the Recovery room as an attendant, but the hours are changing there and the OR is in desperate need of assistants so to make up for the hours that he’ll be losing in the recovery room soon he’s been training as an O.R. Assistant for the last few months.

In fact the last few weekends he’s been finishing up his training. He does everything from setting up the O.R.s for surgeries to assisting during surgery when needed. Assisting can be anything from helping hold a patients limb or handing things to a doctor or nurse during a procedure. I suppose if his hours continue to decline at the hospital between his experience as a Recovery Room assistant and his training in the OR he’d be able to apply for Surgical Technologist Jobs at other hospitals or clinics.

Hopefully between the two departments that my husbands been working in he’ll get enough hours. As of right now he’s working 6 and 7 days a week, but that’s only because he’s training in the OR once the training is done we’ll see what happens.
