How To Get Through The Most Difficult Times In Your Life

by Trish

No one ever said that life would be easy. In fact if you look around, you’ll tend to find that most people suggest quite the opposite. Life is tough, a constant struggle in many ways, and you often won’t know what’s just around the corner.

In a way this can actually be seen as a good thing. The trials that we go through in everyday life only serve to make us stronger, while the dark periods make the happy moments seem that much more special and amazing. If we never faced and adversity, we’d be weak and easily hurt and life and wouldn’t be the complex tapestry of emotions and moments that it is.

Still, waxing philosophical about how the strife in life is actually beautiful isn’t going to make it any easier on us when we’re facing those tough challenges. The secret is just to know how to deal with these times, so that you can weather the storm and wait it out until things get better.

Because they will.

Until then…

Talk to Friends:       Friends play a number of important roles in our lives, but among the most important is being there to help us through our more difficult times. Your friends will often be able to help you physically and practically with any challenges you may come across – whether that means helping you move house by offering their lifting skills, or whether it means driving you tow work in the morning if your car isn’t available.

At the same time though your friends are also there to listen if you are struggling with something less concrete. Friends make the best listeners, and if you just need an ear then being able to talk through your issues can often make them seem a lot smaller and more manageable.

Talk to Strangers:

Don’t talk to just any stranger – that will likely only scare them. What you can do though, is talk to particular strangers whose job it is to listen or who have volunteered to do so. This might mean calling the Samaritans, or seeing a therapist. Don’t be proud – having a non-judgemental ear to listen can make all the difference.

Talk to God:

While a therapist will listen and help you to cope, they won’t necessarily be able to answer every problem and some issues will still need to go to a higher authority. If you are religious, then spending some time alone in a church to talk to God, or just praying quietly at home can help to strengthen your resolve.

Come Up With a Plan:

All these suggestions however involve ‘weathering the storm’. While these methods are all very useful and can help a great deal though, they’re not particularly proactive. Instead then, why not try taking matters into your own hands by coming up with a concrete plan that you can put into action. It doesn’t even matter if this plan doesn’t work in fact – just the fact that you have one will help you to feel more in control and a lot more capable as a result.

How To Decide On Smart Gifts For Kids

by Trish

Smart gifts…hmmm. This makes me wonder if the gifts should be smart, or if they should contribute to the “smartness” of the kid. Let’s take the latter and hope they coordinate with the former. Personally, I would presume, the shopper in question is trying to spend their money wisely on wise choices for gifts for kids.

?     Beyond…

As you adjust your thinking, remember to consider such things as the ages of the children. Many frugal parents are so diligent they even prepare for usability of gifts beyond the age received. In this case, one would need to focus on durability and safety of the toys/gifts as well. Of course gifts like books have no such restrictions.

?     Physical…

Does the gift encourage physical coordination and prowess? If the child can use several body parts at the same time, the gift would be a wise choice.  One of my favorites not only for my children, but now also for grandchildren is the “Sit ‘n Spin”. It employed hand over hand coordination as well as strength while the child sat and pulled his way around and around the platform. Pre-bikes, as I call them, or “Big Wheels” offer physical activity in addition to “success” while bike-riding on the way to learning to ride tricycles and later a two wheel bicycle of his/her own. Scooters are also wonderful items in this category.

?     Sounds…

Does the gift encourage listening skills? Being able to discern various sounds prepares the kid for sound patterns, as with music, as well as auditory learning. Additionally, documentation has proven that music goes a long way in enhancing intelligence. The Leap Pad and VTech line offer a menagerie of skills, including some playback music/auditory opportunities. Child size keyboards offer tunes and rhythms with playback as well, so the parents don’t miss one singe concert!

?     More…

Other excellent choices for gifts include items where a child can, for example, “cook” in their own kitchen while modifying yet experiencing “real life.”  All sorts of art sets from highly reputable companies allow children of all ages to indulge in creativity beyond their wildest dreams…and most offer tools that do not stain carpets, furniture, or children. Travel sets are also available. Certainly an amazing range of dolls from ones that are soft and cuddly, to those that do things and teach things while they talk to the kid…can be part of any child’s repertoire of gifts.

Faves…

In summary, I hope you will indulge this author and note that my personal favorites have stood the test of time. Those include, in the order of their appearance for all my grandchildren: while still in the womb and till this day – books; board games of all sorts; and as the kid learned to read, they received their own magazine subscriptions which were greatly anticipated either every week or each month. Wise shoppers cannot go wrong with these suggestions; no doubt there are many others. Take a day and enjoy the plethora of ideas available for smart shoppers for smart kids’ gifts.

Ways to Perk Up a Stretch of an Ordinary Asphalt Driveway

by Trish

An asphalt driveway provides a hardy surface where you can roll down your vehicle with great ease. It also makes for a great path to traverse on the way to your home’s front door. Unfortunately, with daily exposure to wear and tear, it can eventually turn into the least glamorous part of your property’s ground.

But, with a few key changes coupled with a little elbow greasing on your part, it’s possible to revive its appearance without spending a fortune. So if you’re ready, here are some suggestions to bring the life back to your boring asphalt driveway.

Fix and clean it up

A cluttered asphalt driveway is an eyesore that can create a dismal first impression to your guests. So to make sure that you don’t send the wrong message, start fixing and cleaning your driveway. Remove grime, stains, dirt and mold that have settled on its surface and sides by giving it a good scrub and wash. Also remove vegetation that may have grown on cracks or gaps. Once you have cleaned the mess, fill in potholes and cracks and don’t forget to reseal your driveway. These simple weekend tasks will definitely freshen up the appearance of your piece of road.

Doll up its edges

An asphalt driveway always look ragged around the edges. So for an inexpensive quick fix that will give your personal stretch of road a major facelift, add a neat row of concrete pavers, bricks or Belgian block stones to each of its side. These things will definitely combat the cookie-cutter look of your asphalt driveway by giving it a good frame and at the same time will provide you with a clear visual aid while you back out or pull in.

Border it with lights

Make your driveway safer to drive through even after the sun goes down by installing low-voltage lighting along its borders. This addition will make a pretty landscaping effect and will also improve visibility, thereby reducing the possibility of your guests accidentally driving onto your lawn.

Add a touch of life

Improve the look of your driveway the natural way by planting greens and blooms to the sides. Carefully placed plantings will provide interest to the space and will also increase the privacy of your home. This technique is ideal to use if you have a long driveway that lacks design features. Just make sure that you don’t plant too close to utility lines to avoid problems later on.

Integrate an apron

Another great way to transform your dark patch of tarmac is to tear up a section of it a few inches above the curb and fill it with concrete cobbles or decorative bricks. This simple addition is easy to tackle, but it can do a whole lot in adding an old world charm and texture to an otherwise boring asphalt driveway.

This piece of home improvement advice was written by one of the regular contributors of Ace Driveways, a company that specializes in block paving, wall and patio construction and turfing. They are also known as one of the best companies to provide great solutions for driveways Scotland folks can rely on.

Keeping my home or not?

by The Diva

I’m not sure that I’ll be able to call myself the Home and Garden Diva for all that much longer. I have a lot of things happening in my life lately and because of these things it seems that in a few months I might not have a garden or a home any longer. It will certainly be hard to go with the name if I don’t have those two things anymore now won’t it?

Oh don’t worry I won’t be homeless … I’m thinking the house will end up sold. Maybe I’ll buy a motor home and just travel? Of course then I’ll need motorhome insurance and I’ll have to buy gas … but that still might be cheaper than keeping a house? Maybe .. I’ll be the Nomadic Diva?

Anyway I’m hoping things don’t change because I love my home, garden and life the way it was but who knows …
