I feel like I’m in school again

by The Diva

I feel like I’ve gone back to school. I’m preparing to go back to work as a nurse and since I’ve been on medical leave for six years I decided that it would be a good idea if pulled out my old medical books and just refreshed myself on the basics.

I know everything is still in my head and naturally all that I know is not in my books because I’ve learned quite a bit from my experiences as well. However every little bit helps.

I know that a lot of medications have changed and or new medications are being used just in the six years that I’ve been off work so that’s another thing that I’m trying to brush up on as well. When I had my meeting in the hospitals Human Resources department last week they did suggest to me that I take a look at the new medications for Diabetes, Hypertension, things like the side effects of hexaghen and so on.

I just wish I knew what area of the hospital I’m going to be placed in. I guess it all depends on where there’s an opening. My old job in the ER is not available at this time but I’ll be trying to get back there once I get back in the hospital I’m sure.

New nurses uniforms

by The Diva

I’ve been on medical leave from my job as nurse in the emergency department of a nearby hospital for a few years and I’m hoping to go back to work sometime in the near future. I say hoping – hopefully. I don’t know if I’m really able to go back just yet, but I’d like to and well frankly I may have to … so with that in mind I’ve been doing things like trying to see if I really am ready to get back to work and two browsing around for nursing uniforms etc.

While I was looking around online I came across some uniforms that I kind of like at Marcus nurses uniforms. Certainly if I do start back to work I’ll need some new uniforms so I’m sure I’ll buy a few new uniforms.

Have you ever had to take a medical leave from work for a long period of time and then had trouble getting back to work again? That seems to be what I’m going through. I’m still sick, but I think it would be a good think if I could go back to work … however working in the emergency department might be too much for me, I might just have to face up to that.

I have to start working out

by The Diva

I have to start getting in better shape. Now that the weather is getting better I want to start getting out for a long walk every day at the very least.

Consider that I’m home on medical leave and that I suffer from chronic pain it’s hard for me to plan a regular fitness regime because I just don’t feel well every day … in fact I barely ever feel well. So … I guess I just need to plan to do something daily that I should be able to do most days even if I don’t feel all that well. I figure that if I start feeling somewhat better after I begin walking regularly I could always add more workouts to my schedule if I can handle it.

Someone told me I should think about taking optimum nutrition pro complex but I think I’ll hold off talking any supplement for now until I see if I can just stick to walking regularly and also check out supplement with my doctor.

Do you have trouble getting into a regular fitness schedule? I know it’s probably a little harder for me since I’m in chronic pain, but I have to try.

Waiting for Spring to warm up

by The Diva

I can’t believe how much rain we’ve been getting here in Toronto. It seems that every time I try to go outside with the dog it starts pouring! Oh and our dog is a Lab .. a dog that traditionally loves water, but for some reason not rain drops. Uh huh … strange dog.

When we come back inside she goes to her crate where we keep a folded towel and she jumps up to stand at the side of the crate to look at it, indicating to me that she wants me to get the towel to dry her off … even if she’s not really all that wet because really she just wants to play with the towel. My dog is just too smart.

It’s been raining so much or other wise so miserable for the last few days that we really haven’t been out as much as we normally are. I took advantage of a break in the rain this afternoon and took the dog out for a long walk. While I was out I ran into one of my neighbors, a lady who just loves my dog and always stops to pet her and gives her a treat every time she sees her, and I guess she’s working from home these days. She told me she was just taking a break from working on her computer. She was busy trying to install inetsoft performance management software for her company and then it was back to work for her.

It seems more and more of my neighbors are working from home. I’ve worked from home (being sick on medical leave) for five years but when I first started blogging and doing some work from home I was the only one in the neighborhood that I know of working from home … now just about every house seems to have a person staying home doing work.

Anyway … I’m hoping that the rain will stop soon and Spring will start to warm up to normal temps. It’s been cold, wet and just kind of miserable. How has it been in your area?

Thinking of ways to make extra money – maybe a second job?

by The Diva

I know that the economy is supposed to be getting better, but we’re still feeling the crunch here.

I’ve been off work, on medical leave, for over five years now. It’s hard to believe it’s been that long, but my Crohn’s disease just won’t settle down. I wish it would! I’m an ER nurse and believe it or not, I love my job.

My husband also works in the hospital. He’s an OR day surgery attendant. Unfortunately … the hospital is over budget this year and my husband has to go through 3 sets of rolling layoffs. He’s already had his first two weeks off do to these lay offs and he’s going to have to be off work for two weeks in March and June.

That’s going to hit us hard.

I do make some money via the internet as I have a number of blogs and websites and I allow advertising on them, so it’s not like I’m not bringing in any income while I’m on medical leave, but we need my husbands salary to round out things and keep us afloat.

I’m sure we’re not the only ones in this position.

My husband has started to think about trying to find a job that he can do on the weekends or evenings. Many many years ago he used to work part time for catering companies – as a bartender and or waiter. He made pretty good money doing that and the tips were great so he might look into getting back into that – especially for the four weeks that he’s going to be laid off in the coming months.

He also has been a guitar player since he was nine. He’s very good and he also plays 13 other instruments. He’s often thought about teaching others to play guitar so he’s trying to find a way to get some students.

Are times tough in your area? Have you been thinking of ways to make some extra money? Perhaps you’re working two or more jobs?

I’d love to hear how you’re getting by in this tough economy.
