My poor dog’s been sick

by The Diva

My Labrador Retriever has been sick on and off for close to two months. She’s had me quite worried!

We’ve had her back and forth to the vet three times and made at least one extra visit to the vet on our own just to pick up medication in that time as well. It’s been a worrying and expensive two months with our pup Midnight.

Whatever her “illness” is, it doesn’t seem to be extremely serious, but it’s troublesome. Her appetite started to be poor which for a Lab is very unusual. Then she started have diarrhea quite often and one day she vomited quite a bit and just wouldn’t move. She also seemed to have a fever. It seems that she has yeast in her stool – the Candida Albicans variety .. which can lead to leaky gut syndrome. So we are treating her for the second time in two months with an antibiotic targeted to the bowels. This time she’s on the antibiotic for a whole month! That cost us a bundle!

This last vet visit was the worst. I thought Midnight was going to have to have surgery. We were about to take her for a walk because she hadn’t been acting normal for a few hours and we thought that if she did her business she might feel better. However, once we got out the door she started spinning in circles and yipping in pain. My first thought was that she had a bowel blockage or a twisted stomach. We took her to the veterinarians office immediately.

Lucky for both our dog and us she started passing gas at the doctors office so the doctor just thought it was gas that was bothering her. He gave her an injection of pain medication and gave us enough pain medication to last her the weekend as it happened on a Friday evening. I do now think that she has a partial bowel blockage that evening because she ate a ton of grass that afternoon and she didn’t pass it until the following Tuesday and she was in bad shape until she passed it. I have Crohn’s and I get partial blockages myself quite often so I know the signs and I’m sure that’s what was going on with her. So we are very lucky she didn’t end up having surgery. She was a dog in bad shape those four days though .. She was passing gas and having diarrhea so her bowels were working to some degree but she was obviously in pain.

That was about two weeks ago. She’s doing a lot better now. She’s still on the antibiotics and she’s also getting probiotics to help clear up the yeast and combat the effects of the antibiotics on the good flora in her bowel .. so hopefully she’ll be in good shape again in a couple of weeks.

Man I hate it when my dog is sick. She’s my baby.

Skin problems getting worse

by The Diva

It seems like every month or so my skin is getting worse. I swear that the medication that I take for my migraines is causing my skin to break out. Ever since I started taking it last summer my skin has been getting worse and worse. I think it’s because the medication stops me from sweating and sweating actually helps wash your skin a little bit …

Anyway … now I’m trying to fix skin problems .. even problems like blackheads on nose and whiteheads etc. I hate them! I keep trying different things but nothing seems to help. I’m starting to think that I’m either going to have to stop taking the medication that’s helped my migraines so much or else see a dermatologist. I’ve got to do something.

Does anyone have any suggestions for skin problems? I feel like I’ve tried just about everything.

Medication related skin problems

by The Diva

No matter what I do it seems that my skin is getting worse and worse. I don’t know why it’s causing me so many problems lately.

I really think it’s the medications that I’ve been taking since last summer for my migraines. The medication somehow prevents me from sweating and that seems to really interfere with my skins health … it’s like my skin actually needs to sweat a little bit to stay healthy and clear. I guess I need to do some more research on how to get rid of pimples at least when on this particular medication.

Do you ever have medication related skin problems? What did you do about it?

I’m in the process of quitting smoking

by The Diva

I’m in the process of quitting smoking. I’m on day 5 of using Zyban and so far so good.

I’ve been smoking since I was a teenager, so I guess I’ve been smoking for more than 20 years, and while I started off as a light and occasional smoker I now qualify as a heavy smoker at a pack a day.

I’ve tried quitting at least three times in the past. Once cold turkey .. with little success and well, the other two attempts were with my sisters help when we both had our how jewelry trade related businesses and worked together in the same office. She paid for a Hypnosis treatment for me and later for a laser ear therapy treatment.

I think all in all my three past attempts were the equivalent of going cold turkey. The longest I managed to quit was for three months.

I decided to use a medication to help me quit this time around because in my past three short lived attempts I went through pretty bad withdrawal, anxiety and well – anger. I actually broke a chair in my office during one of my quitting smoking attempts in a fit of rage. My sister immediately asked the next customer that walked in our door if they had a cigarette for “her sister”. LOL

I’m still smoking, but I noticed on day three (Monday) that every time I lit a cigarette it didn’t taste right. It was like sucking on hot air or like trying to smoke a cigarette that had a rip in the paper. Kind of useless.

On day four I continued to smoke as much as I normally did, but as on day three, each cigarette was just like hot air. So today I decided to at least consciously try to cut down. I’ve been up since 9 am and it’s now 5:30 pm and I’ve only had 7 cigarettes today so far. That’s about half of what I would normally have had and I don’t feel too bad.

I’m not feeling anxious or angry. Of course I’m still getting my nicotine fix to some extent, so we’ll have to see what happens when I totally stop in a few days to a week or so, but I think it will be a lot better than when I’ve gone cold turkey.

In all my years as a smoker I’ve never been this determined to quit smoking. I think I really have a chance of being successful this time. I just keep reminding myself of all the bad things about smoking – all the terrible health problems it causes, and all the health benefits I’ll get from quitting. Plus … now if I want to apply for life insurance I’ll be able to get any kind, not just no exam life insurance as I’m sure insurance companies like non-smokers best.

My husband also smokes, but he’s the kind of smoker that can just stop for months at a time and when he starts up again he only smokes about 5 cigarettes a day. Of course, this time around, I told him, if you quit you can never start up again, or at least you can’t start up again as long as I’m quit and I’m determined to quit and stay quit.

So … with some hard work, determination and probably a little luck, we’ll both have totally stopped smoking by the end of the month. We’ll also be saving a lot of money when we do finally quit. Hundreds of dollars actually. That’s another thing I’m looking forward to – extra money to put towards bills, or to save, or to perhaps use for a holiday.

Are you a smoker or an ex-smoker? Have you tried to quit in the past? Were you successful? How did you try to quit? Any tips?
