What Could Sherlock Holmes Tell About You From Your Room?

by Trish

Our rooms are an outward projection of our personalities and our mental states. Just as we choose what clothes we wear based on what they say about us, so too do we choose our ornaments and our general decorating based on what we think will tell people something about who we are.

However, while we might choose our decorations to tell people something we want to broadcast about ourselves, what we might be less aware of is the fact that we’ll also be broadcasting a lot of other information about ourselves that perhaps we don’t want people to know, or that perhaps just wasn’t the kind of image we were hoping to give off.

When we choose items for our property you see, we don’t just do it based on the kind of thing we want to see, we also do it based on our gut feelings and our personalities – on generally things that we aren’t consciously controlling but that influence our decisions and tastes. Likewise the way we look after our property can offer an insight into our mental state both in the short term and over time. Here we will look at some things your property might be communicating about you…

Your Sense of Humour: When someone looks at your DVD and CD collection this doesn’t just tell them which films you like, it also tells them a bit about what kind of person you are in order to have those tastes. In other words people can see what makes you smile, what kind of action you like, and whether you prefer films to be intellectual or bombastic – which all tells them a lot about you.

Your Stress Levels: If your home is looking tidy and perfectly formed then chances are that this is a sign you’re on top of everything and you have lots of spare time. If it’s all over the place and you have piles of paper everywhere, this tells visitors that you’re just about too busy to keep up with your various commitments and have as such allowed things to literally pile up. There’s a reason for the prevailing image of the ‘scatterbrained’ professor.

Hobbies: If you have a hobby like weight lifting or like martial arts, then chances are that you’re going to have lots of related paraphernalia lying around the place. This then tells people something about how you spend your time, in this case it tells then about your physical fitness, and of course it also tells them again a little about your personality.

Colours: The colours we choose for our room can tell people a lot about us, right down to whether we prefer open feeling spaces with lots of light colours, or whether we prefer cosier dark spaces (and this is particularly telling when employed in the bedroom). There’s a good chance that someone who tries to create a more ‘closed’ and darker space in their room with deep browns and other darker colours is more likely to be introverted.

OCD: The anal personality is known for straightening pictures and lining up coasters and for not tolerating any mess. If your home is perfectly spotless and completely spick and span, then chances are that you will fulfil this description and are likely to be more anal in other areas of your life too.

Eight Simple Tips For Choosing The Right Carpet

by Trish

One of the cheapest ways to revamp a room or two in your home is to purchase some new carpets. If you want to get the most out of your decision however, it’s important to make your choice carefully. Though carpets themselves are certainly not complicated, choosing one sometimes can be. Here are eight simple tips for making the most out of your choice

Shop Around

The cost of carpeting varies drastically. Price comparison is therefore an absolute must. Though most people expect to pay extra for quality, many are surprised to learn that where you shop can also play a major role in the price that you pay. Some carpet stores are significantly cheaper than others.  It pays to shop around.

Careful About Installation

Regardless of how nice a particular carpet looks in store, if it’s not installed professionally, you’re unlikely to enjoy the final result. If at all possible, purchase your carpet from a retailer that does its own installations. If this proves impossible, always ask exactly who will be doing the installation. How experienced are they?

Pay Attention to Styles

Though all carpet shoppers pay attention to colour, many don’t spend enough time considering style. Carpet styles include Saxony, Berber and textured. And different carpet styles have different benefits.

  • Saxony carpets are very beautiful but they tend not to be very durable.
  • Berber carpets on the other hand are very durable and are therefore ideal for high traffic areas.
  • Textured carpets tend to reflect light. Because of this, dirt and tracks are much less noticeable.

Take a Long Term View

If you want to purchase something unusual for your home, make it a rug, not a carpet. In general, you are better off sticking to subtle styles that you are likely to enjoy for many years to come. Flashy carpets, or worse, those based upon short lived fads, rarely make long term sense.

Maintenance Matters

If you want to relax, avoid cream carpets. Even if you don’t have children and animals running around, a single glass of red wine is all you need to leave an attention grabbing stain. In general, the darker a carpet is and the more patterns it has, the less noticeable the odd spill is going to be.

Careful with the Stairs

The most difficult area in a home to carpet is always going to be the stairs. Not only do stairs tend to get a ridiculous amount of foot traffic, the carpet also obviously needs to be bent over the edges. To handle the excess foot traffic, choose a dense carpet. And to handle the edges, avoid loops, look for the open coil variety.

Go Organic

Some brand new carpets come complete with a pretty distinctive smell and it’s usually caused by formaldehyde. Though the smell goes away, the chemical remains and is known to cause a host of health problems. To protect yourself and your family, choose a carpet made from wool, jute or other organic materials.

Pay Little Attention to Warranties

Finally, never opt for a carpet solely because of its warranty. Carpet warranties are notorious for being very difficult to claim from. The most common warranty provided with carpets refers to “wear”.

While you might define “wear” as a carpet that looks old and shoddy, most carpet retailers won’t provide a replacement unless there are visible bald spots. Warranties are worthwhile with many purchases but carpets aren’t one of them.

Things To Consider Before You Order Custom Rugs

by The Diva

Every homeowner has their own idea of what looks good in their home. They each like things to look and feel a certain way. Of course, some people like to leave the decorating in the hands of professionals who are good at interior design and decorating. You can also get a little help from magazines and online websites that offer design advice.

Custom rugs can be a great addition to any room, no matter what style your room might be. There are so many styles, colors, patterns and more to choose from. Choosing the right custom rugs for your home should not be a quick decision. There are factors that should be taken into consideration before you pick them. Below are some of the top things to consider before you order your custom rugs.

Choose A Theme

One of the first things to consider when choosing a custom rug is what theme you are working with in the room where the rug will go. To figure out your theme, look at the current colors, furniture, curtains, doors, windows and more to see what the common quality is in them. Once you find the theme, you can then get a customized rug to match with your current decor.

Do Research

Now that you know what theme you are working with in your room, you need to search around for rug companies that will be able to offer you the customized rug that you want. Make sure that the company is reputable to order from and has a consistent record of selling quality rugs to their customers. A quick search online can lead you to many companies that sell custom rugs. Check out their online portfolios if they have them. This should give you a better idea of which company to order your custom rugs from.

Create A Budget

A custom rug is not always cheap. Before you buy a rug, you need to figure out what your budget is going to be. Knowing your budget before you begin searching will keep you from spending too much and also keep you from falling in love with a rug that you cannot afford. Also, bear in mind that certain rugs that you buy might require a more expensive form of upkeep than others. This should also be a factor when creating your budget.

As you can see, there are many things to take into consideration before you purchase any custom rugs. These types of purchases can be a little on the expensive side and should not be done spontaneously. You need to take the time to find a rug that will meet all of your decorating needs and still be within your budget. The right custom rug will make the perfect addition to any room and is a great investment.

Luxury Mattress and Bedding Sets to Pamper Your Inner Diva

by Trish

Who doesn’t want to stay even for just a night at a spa hotel, right? The luxurious room and the equally luxurious mattress and beddings are enough to make you want to extend your stay. They’re also probably enough to make you feel pampered as you fall asleep at night.

If you want to experience the same luxury at home, then why not start by looking for a luxury mattress? In addition to this, you also have to look for the perfect bedding sets to complement your expensive mattress.

Tips in Choosing Luxury Mattress

There are so many factors that you need to consider if you’re after a luxury mattress. For one, you have to consider the size of the mattress. If you want a comfortable and restful sleep at night, then be sure that the mattress can easily accommodate you and your bed partner with lots of space to spare. You don’t want to fight for bed space in the middle of the night, nor do you want to sleep curled up in an uncomfortable position just so you fit the mattress.

In addition to mattress size, you also have to consider the brand of the mattress. Always purchase mattresses made by trusted and reputable brands. Yes, they may be more expensive than common non-branded ones, but if you consider the materials used, the durability, and the technology that came with its production, you will find that it is worth your money and more.

It’s very important that you choose a luxury mattress that not only provides you comfort but also supports your neck and back properly. The higher the coil count, the more expensive and luxurious the mattress is, but the better comfort and support it will also give you. Also, it’s advisable that you choose mattresses with a thick but firm padding.

Tips in Choosing Luxurious Bedding Sets

When it comes to choosing luxurious bedding sets, be mindful of the thread count. As a general rule, the higher the thread count of the bedding set, the more luxurious it is. However, the more luxurious the bedding set is, the more expensive it becomes. If you’re after comfort and durability though, then go for those with a higher thread count.

Much like you would choose a luxury mattress, you should also take into consideration the brand of the bedding sets. Branded bedding sets are made from expensive fabric, so you can be assured that it will always give you a luxurious and restful sleep at night. Fabrics to choose include cotton, silk, as well as sateen. For warmth, go for fabrics such as wool as well as flannel.

Finally, choose the right size of bedding sets for your mattress and pillows. It will be a waste of good money to purchase bedding sets that won’t fit your mattress and pillows.

Luxurious mattress and pillows covered in equally luxurious bedding sets will always make you feel pampered. Because these can be pretty expensive, you have to know how to take care of them properly, so always use the right products when cleaning and washing them. See to it that you store the bedding sets properly so they won’t get easily damaged.

Eight Tips For Home Office Design

by Trish

If you love to telecommute, you’ll love having a home office but only if it’s designed correctly. Home office design isn’t particularly complicated but it does require quite a bit of careful thought and planning. If you’ve recently decided to convert a room into an office, here are eight tips for getting the most out of your decision.

Spaciousness is Key

Space is everything when it comes to home office design. Considering the purpose of the room is to provide yourself with somewhere to lock yourself away for a few hours, a cramped space is not something that you want. If your choice of room is up for debate, go with the larger option. If it’s not, maximise the space that you have available to you by keeping your furnishings to a minimum.

Invest in a Quality Chair

If you’re going to blow your budget on something, make it the chair. When it comes to office chairs, you really do get what you pay for. And when you consider the amount of time that you are likely to be sitting in it, it’s worth paying a lot. Consider the ergonometric variety and never buy before you try.

Storage Space Matters

Regardless of how neat you consider yourself to be, if you don’t have space to put anything, you can expect to be working in a pretty messy environment. Storage space is therefore not something that you can afford to skimp on. Sleek filing cabinets will not only make you feel like a professional, they’re also the perfect solution to your document storage needs.

What do You Need?

Take a look online and you’ll find all manner of fancy desks and storage units. Before purchasing anything however, it’s important to ask yourself exactly what you need. Do you use a laptop or a desktop? Does your work require ample desk space? What items do you need to have easy access to? If you don’t take the time to answer these questions, you are highly unlikely to end up with a home office that meets your needs.

Don’t Work Against the Wall

The last thing you want is a desk that faces a blank wall. If your home office has a window, that’s where your desk should go. If not, it should face outwards, preferably towards the door.

Tame Your Wires

Despite the popularity of wireless internet, wireless power has yet to be invented. This means that your home office is never going to be completely free of tangles. You can however keep such tangles to a minimum with cord winders, tubing and conveniently placed holes in your desk.

Choose Colours You Love

One of the benefits of telecommuting is that you don’t need to work in a stuffy office environment. Don’t make the mistake of creating one at home. Beige has no place in a modern home office. Choose colours that you love. It’s also worth noting that different colours tend to have different effects on different people. Try to establish what colours are most likely to keep you calm, and of course, productive.

Keep Things Bright

Finally, if you want to minimise eye strain and generally stay productive, ample lighting is very much required. To make the most of natural light, you should try to keep your windows as bare as possible. And when it comes to artificial lighting, don’t rely exclusively on the ceiling variety. Additional lighting in close proximity to your desk is very much recommended.

Ed Markwell is an interior designer with a passion of protecting the environment from global warming. He recommends replacing older models of gas boilers with new ones to slash energy use by 50%.
