Whoa massively salty soup!

by The Diva

I think I just had an overdose of salt! I had some soup early today – some Campbells Chunky soup and after I started eating it I noticed how salty it was so once I finished I looked at the label and nearly fell over when I saw how much salt was in it!

The salt they listed on the label was only for a 250 ml serving. That’s about a cup of soup. Now if you are only having soup for your meal I think you generally have more than just a cup, especially when the can has twice that much in it. Right? So the sodium listed for a 250 ml serving was 650 mg. It was even higher in potassium at 750 mg per 250 ml, yet if I’d only had a cup of soup I would have only had 130 calories which isn’t a lot when that’s all you are having, particularly if you haven’t eaten in several hours and don’t expect to eat for several more hours. So I had the whole can of soup and ended up having over 1300 mg of sodium.

That’s horrendous! That’s more sodium than some fast food burgers!

I’m in Canada and in a recent fast food study they said that Canadians have the most salt in their fast food and I’m starting to think that we might have the most salt in our canned and processed food as well. I tend to read labels and stay away from overly salted foods but this time I didn’t read the label before I purchased the soup. Shame on me. I certainly won’t be making this mistake again.

I feel bloated already! I’m going to have to stay away from anything salty for a couple of days. Hmmm it’s warm out … maybe I should go sit in my neighbors metal building and use it as a sauna to sweat out this overdose of salt? Nah that’d probably be as bad for me as the soup was!

Oh well – lesson learned – Read the label before buying or opening!

My neighborhood is under construction this week

by The Diva

I’m tired this week. Almost every day there’s noise on the street very early in the morning. Why? Well … there’s construction crews tearing up our sidewalks for some reason. I’m not sure why, but they’re replacing some of the sidewalks that were put in two years ago when some of our neighbors had their waterlines improved.

On Tuesday the sidewalk right in front of our house was torn up with one of those big hammer drills. Our whole house shook like crazy! Luckily it only took about fifteen minutes for them to finish. Then … once they removed the broken concrete they cleared the area and at about 4:30 pm they put in new cement and smoothed it out and moved on to other areas.

Before they left the neighborhood they blocked things off with wooded blockades and put canvas over the wet cement but by 8 pm – only about an hour after the guys had left the area someone walked in all the wet cement in front of my house and apparent all down the street (doing the twist in the cement) mucking it all up. Who does that? So it’s all ruined! So I guess maybe tomorrow I’ll have another hammer drill making noise in front of my house again.

Now the sidewalk in front of my house is only partly useable because of the mucked up footprints in the cement. All the little kids parading by with their cute little personalized lunch boxes are having trouble walking on it. I hope they fix it soon.

My husband needs a new job

by The Diva

I think it’s time for my husband to find a new job. He’s been working at the hospital for close to 10 years and he’s still in a part time position.

He’s worked in several jobs at the hospital. He first started when some cleaner jobs opened up and before long he went into portering and now he works in the Recovery Room. He loves what he does – it’s just that the position that he’s doing is only part time and there’s no full time opening available.

The other problem with his job is that our hospital has blown it’s budget over the last year so they’re making all the part time workers going on rotating temporary lay offs. In the last year my husband has been off work for a total of 6 weeks in temporary lay offs.

We’ve heard that they’re planning more lay offs for the summer so husband is starting to look for a new job outside the hospital. He really doesn’t want to leave his workplace because he really does enjoy his job, but we just can’t take the continued job insecurity and loss of income that the temporary layoffs cause.

Time to cut down on expenses

by The Diva

I’m scrambling to see where my husband and I can save money once again. My husband came home from work on Friday with the lovely news that he was going to be “temporarily” laid off work for the last two weeks of December.

That means he’ll have been laid off for a total of 6 weeks since last December.

Since I’m home on unpaid medical leave we really depend on my husbands income. We pretty much live pay check to pay check … so each time he goes through one of these one or two week lay offs it takes us about a month to recover, sometimes longer.

So … now I’m trying to find ways to save money on our bills and other expenses. I think we’re going to cut down to the bare minimum. Perhaps I’ll be searching around for insurance quotes again to see if we can cut down on what we’re paying for our house and car insurance too since even that went up this year.

Starting to ban ip addresses for spammers

by The Diva

I was just mentioning in my last post that I’ve been getting a lot of comment spam lately.

Have you found that you’re getting more comment spam lately? Has it really increased or is it just my sites that are getting a lot more than usual?

I’m getting hit on by spammers from Croatia, Russia, Turkey and India. Oh sure there are spammers from other countries too, but the four countries above are hitting my sites the hardest and they don’t just leave one comment … no they have to leace ten or twelve at a time, all saying “nice site” or something about diet pill reviews.

when will it end!

I’ve actually taken to blocking ip addresses or whole domains from many of my sites. I know that will make it harder for legitimate visitors to leave a comment, but if it weren’t for those people ruining things for the rest I wouldn’t have to do that.

How do you handle comment spam?
