Top Tips That Will Make Your Kitchen Easier To Work In

by Trish

Day 180 - Bloody washing up

How many times has someone said to you ‘the trick is to wash up your dishes right after you’ve eaten?’. It sounds like good advice sure, but what these smug friends don’t seem to take into account is that it’s not always quite that simple. For instance, it might be that you often watch TV while you eat and that you want to watch the rest of the program before you do the washing up. Alternatively it might be that once you’ve sat down, you suddenly feel too tired to get up and do the washing up after your long day of work and cooking.

Finally though, it might just be that you don’t enjoy washing up because your kitchen is too crowded to make it easy. If you have a small or badly designed kitchen, then what’s already a tough and unpleasant job can become unbearable. Here we will look at some of the ways you can make your kitchen more conducive to work, including washing up.

Work Zones

No matter the work you are doing in the kitchen you will find you need work zones. Work zones are areas that you can stand to work and ideally you should be able to reach more than one surface as well as some kind of appliance. In other words a good work zone might enable you to reach two or three bare surfaces and the hob. This way you can chop vegetables, stir a broth and drop things into a bowl all at once. When you first come up with your kitchen design you should try to think about where the work zones are going to be and how you can include more if possible. Using a kitchen island is one great way to add reachable surfaces at multiple points around the kitchen.

Organize Your Small Appliances

Blenders, toasty makers and coffee machines are all great things to add to your kitchen that can help you to get more from it and provide better for guests. However they also have a downside which is to clutter your surfaces and make it harder to keep things clean. Keep them organized by providing storage for them, and make sure that there aren’t too many wires draped across your surfaces.

Have a Good Draining Rack

For washing up specifically a good draining rack is important and you should make sure that this provides enough space to keep all of your items on easily without it becoming overcrowded. A bowl in your sink can also help with the washing up.

Make Everything Accessible

While you should try to keep things out of the way and off the surfaces you should also ensure that you can quickly access anything you need to from the appliances to crockery and utensils. If you have to root around for ages to find a knife or climb up onto a step ladder to get the tinned beans then you’ll find that more often than not you end up just making ready meals instead…

My new portable air conditioner

by The Diva

I’m finally using my portable air conditioner / dehumidifier. I think I mentioned back in May or maybe early June that when I was shopping in Costco I noticed they had them on sale for a fantastic price and I decided to get one.

We don’t have central air conditioning in our house so we use window air conditioners in the summer to cool our home. These are cumbersome to install and remove each year. So naturally when I saw the portable air conditioner on sale I thought it might be easier to use. Of course it’s still pretty heavy, but it’s on wheels and if I keep it on the same floor that I’m using it on I won’t ever have to lift it – at least not in to a window!

Anyway .. we finally managed to get it out the box. It took a while to remove all the strapping tape and then read the directions and put the pieces together. The worse part was cutting the window opening part for the exhaust tubes. It’s working now though.

I can’t say that it’s cooler or better than our window units. In fact I’d say it might be noisier than our window units because of the floor vibrations, but it works and thankfully if one of our window units dies (hopefully not) we have a spare air conditioner now!

You can tell it’s spring around here

by The Diva

It’s that time of year again when people start working on their houses. Whether inside or outside, it seems spring is the time to either renovate or repair the house or yard or add something new.

I’ve noticed a lot of changes in my neighborhood as I walk around with my dog. Some houses are getting painted or having a new fence put in. Others are having some landscaping done. Still others must be having either some home repairs done or some renovations because I can hear hammering or sawing as I walk by or I see those big bins in their driveway for reno materials.

One house that I walk by regularly just got a new metal garage put up and it’s kind of cool looking. It has a sign on it that says – metal residential buildings and I guess they’re the makers of the building. No idea how much that would cost but it’s going to last for a long time I think.

Anyway you can definitely tell it’s Spring around here, there’s lots of work getting done! I’ve been working on my garden and getting some work done in the house – with more to come … How about you?

I feel like I’m in school again

by The Diva

I feel like I’ve gone back to school. I’m preparing to go back to work as a nurse and since I’ve been on medical leave for six years I decided that it would be a good idea if pulled out my old medical books and just refreshed myself on the basics.

I know everything is still in my head and naturally all that I know is not in my books because I’ve learned quite a bit from my experiences as well. However every little bit helps.

I know that a lot of medications have changed and or new medications are being used just in the six years that I’ve been off work so that’s another thing that I’m trying to brush up on as well. When I had my meeting in the hospitals Human Resources department last week they did suggest to me that I take a look at the new medications for Diabetes, Hypertension, things like the side effects of hexaghen and so on.

I just wish I knew what area of the hospital I’m going to be placed in. I guess it all depends on where there’s an opening. My old job in the ER is not available at this time but I’ll be trying to get back there once I get back in the hospital I’m sure.

Change of Schedule

by The Diva

Strange … my husband came home from work yesterday telling me that his schedule had changed. Normally – well lately anyway, he’s been working on Saturday evenings and having Sundays and Mondays off … but his boss decided to switch his schedule with someone else’s because another worker was away so he said he was going to work Monday to Friday this coming week and not work this evening.

Well guess what … at about 3:35 pm our phone rings and it’s the hospital asking where Chris is … he’s still on the schedule and he’s supposed to be working! He ran out of here so fast he forgot his ID tags! He needs his ID card when he’s working to get into special employee only areas. I noticed that he’d forgotten his Id right after he left but he was two blocks away by then (he can walk to work from here) so I grabbed my coat and put a leash on the dog and went after him but he didn’t come back out of the hospital like I thought he would when he realized he’d forgot his ID. Apparently he got some kind of temporary ID made. So I wasted my time and froze my butt outside … but the dog did get an extra walk so I guess that was ok.
